NFT: No thread for Jim Gilmore? Latest Presidential candidate

buford : 8/1/2015 7:27 am
I admit I didn't know who this guy was and groaned when I heard that there was another guy joining the race on the Republican side. But I saw him interviewed on the Brett Baier report (they do a segment with each candidate with the panel which is very informative). He's a serious guy, military background, homeland security/intelligence backgroud, degree in foreign policy, law degree, Attorney General and Governor of Virginia. Yes, he's a conservative, but I don't think he's way out there.

I can handle a reasonable, rational conservative. Its the recent hijacking of the party by the *insert pejorative here* that turned me off
No interest

No money. No point. What incredible egos these guys have to think they should be President. He'll never break 0.2 % in the polls

I understand being lured away by the honesty and integrity of Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Al Fraken and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Hmm, if you say that, then you've given in to special interests. IMO, all of the men (and woman) up there have an ego, they have to. And that's ok. As long as it doesn't get in the way of the job. I don't want someone who has an idealogical agenda, I just want someone capable of the job, follow the constitution and do what an executive is supposed to do, execute the laws that the people's representative pass, not make up his own.

Is there any reason for either of us to think that a guy who has held the jobs he has isn't beholden to and in league with the special interests? Just because he's not their favorite in this field doesn't mean he wouldn't be a team player if he was selected.

Actually Al, I'm not fond of any of those. It comes down to the lesser of two evils. Its a matter of the overall philosophy of the parties with the hard right turn and hateful obstructionism of my old party. The 2008 financial meltdown fiasco started me leaning in that direction and over the years I learned enough and leaned enough to eventually tip over.

Glad you responded after Uncle Leo hijacked the thread. I also don't like the far right element of the Republican party but I think the candidate will come from the moderate wing. My point is that I was similarly disturbed about the hard left turn of a branch of the Democratic party. I could vote for a moderate Democrat. By the way, obstructionism is not solely a Republican thing. See Harry Reid when he was Majority Leader.

As a long time Virginian, I can assure you that Gilmore is extremely right wing, and very Christ driven. Think Huckabee or Santorum.

Please tell me that was tongue in cheek. Otherwise, it's a really fucked up accusation.

Sucks sucks sucks.
It was tongue in cheek, and it wasnt an accusation
Deej : 8/1/2015 8:19 pm : link
although if you take the comment seriously, it is a pretty bizarre list. We're talking presidential politics, so HRC makes sense to mention I guess. But why the other 3? What is Al Franken's integrity concern? Why single out a back bencher like him rather than your more usual boogeymen, Reid, Pelosi, Rangel etc.

The distinguishing characteristic among those 3 congresspeople is that they are in particular identified for their Jewishness in a way that Wyden and Bennett (for example are not).

So if you want to talk about it, maybe Al should explain his post.
I didn't actually know Schumer was Jewish
Bill L : 8/1/2015 8:32 pm : link
But considering he is the bellwether on Israeli topics, I should have figured it out. Shumer would be someone I would I would name because he's my Senator. The other two I might name, along with Reid and pelosi because their archetypical skew you extreme libs. So, other than Schumer if I went on a random lib rant those names would flow off my tongue too
Also please don't make me google wyden and Bennet
Bill L : 8/1/2015 8:38 pm : link
Who,are they?
He wasnt listing the most liberal Dems
Deej : 8/1/2015 8:40 pm : link
he was listing ones purportedly with honesty and integrity issues (indeed, Hillary isnt that liberal among Dems). It's an odd list. Im not saying he picked those 3 because they are known for their Jewishness. But as a Jew, it was the first thing that stuck out to me. To be honest I hear very little about Franken, and that's what really stuck out to me -- why Franken and not Reid and Pelosi, who right wingers constantly complain about re ethics and liberalism.

Bill L : 8/1/2015 8:45 pm : link
Other than chuck, I hate them all two. Franken I've thought smarmy forever but more so because I hated him on snl. And wasserman-Shultz I think is a shrill lying pudendum. Politician type lying, not Hillary type lying. But I cant stand her. So as I said, I might have blurted those names too
To clarify
Bill L : 8/1/2015 8:47 pm : link
I don't hate Franken for anything political. I don't even know much about him for his senate stuff. I just hate his face.

was Jewish. And I really think you have to be a bit paranoid to think that Al mentioned those people because they were Jews.
I was not going to respond although I could have very easily.
Big Al : 8/1/2015 9:01 pm : link
I would rather just be considered antisemitic than respond to the Uncle Leo's of the world. Seinfeld reference for those not in the know. However, I have to say some of the posters were pretty accurate in their analysis.
I didnt accuse Al of anything
Deej : 8/1/2015 9:02 pm : link
I made a tongue in cheek comment, which Al understood.

It is an odd group of people. The Jewey-est prominent members of congress (or among the handful of such). The ones who wear their yiddishkeit on their sleeves.

Well back to Gilmore
Deej : 8/1/2015 9:49 pm : link
he's not a good politician or candidate. Won a term in VA as a single-issue candidate (car tax, I believe). I've met him maybe half a dozen times (prob a bit less) -- we worked at the same firm, though in different offices and on different stuff so it was all meet & greet and cocktail party stuff. Not unpleasant but pretty unmemorable and uncharismatic, and I've met a lot of politicians.

Had a reputation as not a hard worker at the firm -- never really tried to build the lobbying practice he was brought in to work on, and was just happy to cash the guaranteed checks and be a "prestige partner" which no one wanted (I suspect that the DC partners knew exactly what they were buying and sold a bill of goods to everyone else; office politics...). When he ran in 2008 (remember!), his partners groaned across the board that they had to pony up contributions for a guy who had no chance and who wasnt even trying very hard (I was not a partner; I just heard to complaining).
