NFT: Sports Phone: A blast from the past

pganut : 8/1/2015 9:20 am
For those of us over 45 and recall the world prior to cable tv, who doesn't remember dialing 976-1313 for sports scores?

A nice article from Newsday helps to reminisce. Very impressive roster of current-day sports broadcasters who cut their teeth there. Some nostalgia for your Saturday.

your link is much more interesting though. I don't remember dialing to get scores, it reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with the movie listings.

remember dialing up to find out who the Giants drafted. Was stunned to hear this name Phil Simms QB Morehead State.

Don't know which is harder for the young-uns to believe that 1)the only choices for up to the minute sports info then were CBS88 and WINS1010 at :15 or :45 or the sports phone or 2) hardly anyone gave a crap about the draft. It was held on a week day afternoon and only the big names were familiar to most fans. I literally had never heard of Simms and I was probably more up on the draft then 99% of football fans at the time.

Headhunter, the line was used by organized crime to broadcast the daily number! They used to announce the total mutual handleof whatever race track was running, of which the last three numbers were the daily number.

"We did the Tampa fishing phone from New York," Trautwig said. "You called this guy Bob who talked about Buoy 17 and the causeway."

Race results from the meadowlands to check and see if won if we left the track early before the late races.
