He's smart and experienced he just doesn't have the wheels. Defense matters as we learned the hard way with the Flores experiment at SS. Giving extra outs to good teams results in runs crossing the plate.
I think they want to see if this is a viable option or not.
Granderson doesn't have legit CF range. It's not at question is it? I understand wanting to put your best offensive lineup out there. Two key positions that strategy has to yield in favor of defense are SS and CF imo.
RE: I think they want to see if this is a viable option or not.
Makes me think they'd like to have Conforto around and in the lineup again sooner than later if possible.
Yeah me too. And Granderson HAS shown good range in RF this year. Lets see how it goes. If Granderson is even average-ish its a HUGE upgrade over Lagares in the lineup. Leaves open the door for both Conforto and possibly even a Johnson/Cuddyer platoon in RF.
Granderson's defense to Lagares you are going to be sadly disappointed obviously, but if you compare him to other CF in baseball he might not be that far off. And you still have Lagares to come in late in the game.
Thats why its only a trial run. If Granderson can't do it he can't do it. I don't think he embarrassed himself out there last year in a few games. If he does you quickly pull the plug. But like I said, if he's half way decent it opens up a whole array of options to us.
Where they say "ok, this guy is playing this position no matter what"
If the bad outweighs the good and he's just not comfortable there, you move him back to RF and that's it. But it makes a lot of sense to me to see if this is a potential lineup option or not because a) Lagares to Granderson offensively is a very, very big difference this year and b) it keeps the door open for Conforto.
Entirely possible it's a no-go but you have to at least find out.
Not this weekend vs the Nationals in our biggest series of the year.
Good thought. There might be some validity to Kirk going on the DL with a stiff neck however forcing them to keep Conforto up a little longer, in which case they might still want him to get time starting in RF.
Johnson TODAY as opposed to Conforto in RF even if Conforto is staying. This might be the biggest series of the year and Johnson is having a big year. Beating the Nats outweighs Conforto's development. At least for this weekend.
If Cespedes can park one in the upper deck tonite Citi will explode
The lineup is stacked. Look what happened when Johnson and Uribe joined the team. Think Cespedes will have the same effect. deGrom goes 7/8 innings with a bunch of support.
NEW YORK -- Cesar Puello cannot get healthy enough for the New York Mets to dump him.
Puello, who has spent the entire season on the disabled list with what is being labeled as a stress reaction in his back, appeared in a rehab game on Monday in the Gulf Coast League. However, Puello complained of renewed back discomfort after that game and has been pulled off the rehab assignment. Link - ( New Window )

Terry Collins' plan for center field includes Yoenis Cespedes and Juan Lagares sharing the position. Details:
Link - ( New Window )
From the link ... Cespedes will make his Mets debut on Saturday against the Washington Nationals in left field, because that's the position he played with Detroit and Collins did not want too much on Cespedes' plate as he gets acclimated to new surroundings. But the manager said he now plans to use Cespedes on a regular basis in center field beginning as soon as Sunday's series finale against the Nats.
Cespedes brings them more offense but why lose defense just to accommodate his being in the line up.
Yoenis Cespedes is your new CF
I'm sure they will give it a try but I hate sacrificing defense with this pitching staff. Keep great defense up the middle and add him to LF and you have also improved the offense without sacrificing any defense. We just got TDA back; another upgrade and hopefully at some point DW.

Not what I would do but I certainly hope it works out. But admittedly I haven't ever seen him play CF maybe he will better there than I expect him to be.
"When I got to the big leagues, I came in as a center fielder, which is the position I played in Cuba," Cespedes said in Spanish. "In Oakland I was moved to left field, and I struggled at first to adapt to it, but I'm very used to it by now, and I feel very comfortable there. But, even though I havent done it regularly in a few years, I know I can play center field. I will play where the Mets need me."
I don't know how ell he played CF but is's not that he hasn't gone it (75 games in the majors). Maybe someone can check his fielding metrics.

Very different than the reports where he allegedly said he would "refuse" to play anywhere besides LF.
Exactly, and also a big improvement in offense in LF and the lineup in general before even mentioning TDA being back as well. I would prefer they play to their strength which is pitching and keep the best CF defense supporting it.
Go with the best defense and the new and improved offense and let them fight for the division.

December 9, 2014 ... Boston Herald ... Yoenis Cespedes is willing to play right field for the Red Sox.
In fact, he never told them he wasn't.
When the Red Sox acquired Cespedes in the trade deadline deal for Jon Lester, they envisioned him playing primarily right field. But in his initial conversations with manager John Farrell, Cespedes noted that he had played only left and center with the Oakland A's and felt more comfortable in those positions than in right. The Sox agreed that the best thing to do for the remainder of the season was to keep him in left field.
But any notion that Cespedes flat-out refused to play right field is untrue, according to a source familiar with the situation. Furthermore, when Cespedes spoke to Farrell on the day after the Sox signed Hanley Ramirez to be their left fielder, he agreed to move to right. Link - ( New Window )

Why this pitching staff? Wouldn't defense be more important with a lesser staff that threw fewer strikeouts?
6 innings 2 runs. With all the great pitchers you got to get them early. deGrom's ERA going into this game in the first inning is 4.71 and has allowed 5 of the 9 home runs he's has given up in the 1st

Yeah. Oddly a real ace performance -- gutted it out on a night he wasnt mowing guys down for whatever reason(s). To walk out of that with 2 runs over 6 innings is a real accomplishment.

you could see how bad he wanted that one. Clippard fresh for tomorrow. Get Blevins back in the pen and put Cuddyer's bat on the bench to come in against tough lefties and this team is going to be really tough to play against. Love the flexibility Sandy has built with this roster. Did a lot more than I expected he could in season and just about anything anyone could have asked for.
After a rough first inning he settle down and didn't allow them to score past those first two runs giving his team the chance to get back into the game.
back from you and don't think we plan on giving it back the next 5 years. Matter of fact we plan on making a home away from home at your park for a while
battled and did a heck of a job after a rough first. Kept the team in the game even though he didn't have his best stuff. Also Duda looks like he's heating up again. He's hitting like he was in April and May.

If everyone can stay healthy in the super rotation, I think the mets can be perennial contenders.
Cespedes has to be himself but your first game for a new team is always nervous time. A healthy DW is going to be interesting, Matz hopefully cleared to throw. Cuddyer bench strength, Blevins cleared to throw. As good as tonight lineup was, it can get a boost or 2

RE: RE: But why not Conforto - Cespedes - Granderson
if the Mets are willing to play a guy out of position in center? He could play every day.
And are Kelly Johnson or Cuddyer's offense worth the drop off from Lagares to Cespedes in center?
It's just a strange decision to me.
Because he was hitless in five of his six games. Once the trade went down it was the right decision to send him down to get the needed work.
Even if it is the right move to give up for the year on your best hitting prospect after less than a week, is Kelly Johnson's offense really worth the dropoff from Lagares to Cespedes in center (and Cespedes to Johnson in left)? Cespedes isn't good in center.
I guess we'll see.
