NFT: Lawn Mower Recommendation

UConn4523 : 8/3/2015 11:39 am
Looking for a push mower that is not self-propelled. I used a Toro growing up but really not sure who makes the best at this point in time. Based on my research a Honda or Briggs & Stratton engine seem to be a must.

I'll be mowing a flat, .3 acre lot so I don't need anything crazy but will spend for higher quality.
My House is on a 1/3 acre
Aloha Alan : 8/3/2015 11:56 am : link
but I use a rear propelled mower.

The below link gives you an idea of what is good at Sears which I trust quite a bit. Lowes/Home Depot will have some others, but you can't really go wrong at Sears and especially if you find one on-sale.

is fantastic. Not cheap but seems pretty bulletproof. Honda motor obviously but you also get a deck that's not going to rust.

I have .4 acre lot and this electric mower is awesome.
It comes with 2 80v batteries, and I do need to a battery change once in order to finish the whole lot. But electrics are so lightweight, non-noisy, and no smoke fumes so its very enjoyable to leisurely moow my lawn with this thing.
I would avoid Briggs and Stratton
AnnapolisMike : 8/3/2015 12:20 pm : link
Went thru 3 of them before paying a bit more for a Honda which seems bulletproof.

Your results will probably vary....but I had terrible luck with B & S.
My Toro is over 10 years old
TJ : 8/3/2015 12:21 pm : link
I used my last one over 10 years too. I'm sure there are other good products out there but the toros have worked so well I'll probably never get around to trying them.

+1

this was my first full season with the Honda (Fall cleanup plus Summer) and it was great. I'm on a half acre of land in the woods, so I have heavy does of leaves and the mower was able to mulch them just fine. I stopped bagging as well, because it mulches so well.

The best attribute with this mower is that it cuts tall and wet grass with ease. My last mower was a Toro and I'd be stalling on every pass during the late spring growing season. The Honda never stalls.
That RX seems great
UConn4523 : 8/3/2015 12:25 pm : link
but Im not sure I want to spend that much. I'll keep it in mind though.
Definitely go with the Honda
figgy2989 : 8/3/2015 12:33 pm : link
I had a Briggs and Stratton, constantly needed to be serviced. Finally decided to go with the Honda and did not regret it. I know you are going to pay up a little bit, but it is worth it. I believe most Honda's are the "easy start" model, which mean no choke/priming. Another feature I have is the bag to mulch switch. There are a few areas of my property that I do not want to bag and the mulch option is fantastic for the Honda.

All things considered
blueblood'11 : 8/3/2015 12:34 pm : link
I'd go with Toro.
I have that Honda mower too
ChathamMark : 8/3/2015 12:36 pm : link
I went cheap and bought a Snapper years back. Hated it. Love the Honda, it was worth the extra money.
thanks everyone
UConn4523 : 8/3/2015 12:40 pm : link
i think I will definitely get a honda mower, but i don't want self propelled. Just more parts that can break and pushing myself perfectly fine. I'll probably get a model down from the RX that's push only and see how it goes.
what about robot?

Before throwing out the idea of self-propelled ....
Beer Man : 8/3/2015 12:50 pm : link
Consider the type of grass in your yard. When I lived in Dallas, I had St. Augustine grass, and it was a bitch to push a mower through. I've never had that as an issue with my other yards, but with St. Augustine grass it was worth the few extra dollars to have a self-propel. I've had a self-propel Toro for the last 14-years, and other than gas, oil, and spark plugs I haven't had to put a dime into it.

UConn4523 : 8/3/2015 1:09 pm : link
i've only be opposed to them due the unit having more pieces that can breakdown and need repairing. I used self-propelled growing up and enjoy them, but my yard is fairly simple in size with typical grass that doesn't seem to need pushing assistance.

I'm going to visit Home Depot and Lowes this weekend to see if they have any in store deals. I don't have a local Sears so that option is out.

I've heard good things about Ariens, anyone ever use one?
Ariens Razor - ( New Window )
Need a mower also
Colossus of Rhodes : 8/3/2015 1:22 pm : link
Moving into a townhouse in Atlanta soon - will have a small backyard to maintain with no easy access from the garage to the yard.

I don't really want to use a weed whacker cause I'd like thinks to look neatly mowed, but I also want a very small mower that I can just carry through the house into the backyard. I would prefer electric over gas.

Any ideas?
You don't buy a mower at Home Depot or Lowes
Giants2012 : 8/3/2015 1:22 pm : link
unless you want the stripped down green push mower which cost approx $149 dollars and you beat the hell out of it and rarely change oil. Otherwise, it's made in China and won't go three years without issues (carb need replacement, etc). Not even the John Deere tractors are the real ones. It's all shit.

You go to a lawn mower store.

They sell the Honda's so I can definitely go there should I want to purchase that one. I plan on going to a local store as well but HD does have higher end units.
enjoy it for a few years then
Giants2012 : 8/3/2015 1:38 pm : link
but don't look at the customer complaints regarding Honda from Home Depot and Lowes. You're sucked into the brand name and ignoring the roof it's under.

Good luck

this - and my yard machine that I inherited when I moved in to my last house started on the first pull after primed 5 times, EVERY TIME, for 7 years, I beat the shit out of it, never changed the oil, and its now retired at the top of a gorgeous summit property in west virginia overlooking a million acres of national forest and still its new owner says the same thing. first pull every time. no issues - its a hogger.
Avoid Honda - it's going down hill. And avoid chain stores.
Red Dog : 8/3/2015 2:19 pm : link
I am not going to retype everything I have said about Honda mowers in the past. I was pretty unhappy with mine and would buy another high end Toro over a Honda in an instant. I would also consider Ariens. If you want something less expensive, take a look at Snapper.

What I will say now is that one of my buddies who used to be a huge Honda fan bought a new one last year. He absolutely hated it and got rid of it already. Says it was the biggest piece of shit he's ever had, and he's had a ton of power equipment (Gravely, Ariens, Kubota, and some chain store stuff, etc.) over the years.

Also avoid buying power equipment from chain stores like Sears, Lowe's, and Home Depot. They sell cheaped out and/or bastardized versions of big name equipment, and they do not have professional set up or service behind the equipment (you are stuck with 3rd party service which usually sucks to the max). The chain stores don't even sharpen blades and often don't stock them, either. You will need your blade sharpened and balanced annually and replaced when it wears out.

When you need parts beyond a new air filter or spark plug, have a warranty claim, or need other service, you will come to understand the value of buying from a franchised, servicing dealer who offers warranty protection, has parts in stock, factory-trained mechanics, and sometimes loaners or other services that can help.
Big box stores often get cheaper versions of the same product
Gary from The East End : Admin : 8/3/2015 2:20 pm : link
They may have the same name and model number, but it's a more cheaply made item specifically manufactured for Lowe's/Home Depot/Wal-Mart.

I'll put in another word for an electric mower. Mine is super light, reasonably quiet and pretty much maintenance free. Plus, gas-powered lawn and yard tools are tremendous polluters.
Another vote for the Honda HRX

from Home Depot 2 years ago.

it burns oil but still still runs strong. only thing I have changed was the blades twice a year.

1/2 acre property with lots of hills and awkward inclines.

might inherit a Deere 170 with the coveted Kawasaki motor soon.

And regarding things being built in China. That doesn't make a whiff of difference.

Same quality control and manufacturing standards as you would get in Germany or a higher end US factory. Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz build most of their components in China nowadays. Even the new Chinese Volvo's are much better cars than when they were made in Sweeden.

don't let built in China dissuade you. it has nothing to do with anything.

PRC is the manufacturing hub of the world, like it or not.

yeah, b/c car manufacturing parts from China

are the same as home depot lol

Tell that to the thousands of Home Depot customers with crap tools which don't last yet their Honda vehicles run forever.

This was absolutely my experience with chainsaws. I pulled a rookie move and got my first at HD; dead in a year. Got a quality Stihl saw at a power equipment store, have also bought a snowblower from them, and other stuff; have a strong relatioship with a quality store and haven't looked back.

ahh, they both suck regardless of tool from the lawn department.
Why not get a self propelled?
steve in ky : 8/3/2015 4:48 pm : link
IMO for as many years that you keep a mower it is worth getting even with a flat yard. Better than at some point getting tired of the hassle of pushing the mower and buying a new one just for that reason. The Torro makes some with a self pacing feature which s real nice because you can easily just walk at your own pace yet the mower is still self propelled and you needn't push it at all.

RinR : 8/3/2015 5:28 pm : link
I got a walk-behind T-B at Lowes with a B&S engine 3 years ago for about $250 I think. The mowing size of my yard is similar to yours and this mower works fine.

And yes, winterize it; change oil, air filter and sharpen blade every spring; spark plug every 2 - 3 years and you'll get 12+ years out of it.

From lowes a couple months ago and it is great, never bogs down and starts easy. I will never buy another Toro after the last one, it only lasted 3 seasons and it was pissing me off 2 weeks after buying it.

The Husqvarna is self propelled but its variable speed so you can go as slow as you want or as fast as it can go. You can run it without being self propelled also I believe

My Honda is on its 12th season
NNJ Tom : 8/4/2015 8:19 am : link
All you do is run it dry of gas before putting it away for the season and it starts in 1 or 2 pulls every time.

Got mine at a Honda dealer. Paid a lot, but its more than paid for itself.

A couple months ago? I would hope it lasts through the summer. Hate to break it to you but it's a knockoff. Three people, including, myself, bought the Husqvarna weed whacker a few years back. All had carbureator issues.
