lineup of the season. Maybe our worst defensive one though (Flores for Tejada and no Lagares in CF). I think the increased fire power is worth it though. Just hoping that our OF can hang in there.
the new guys give TC much more depth and options. So because of Colon's recent struggles, the highest offensive output (in theory) lineup.
Yup. And against lefties.... Uribe kills them. Cuddyer has historically killed them. If Wright comes back, he kills them. Lagares is actually decent against lefties.

Gotta say, it's been the wildest and probably best week to be a Mets fan since Citi Field opened.
Citi Field definitely had a Nassau Coliseum Islander vibe to it this weekend. Long suffering fanbase finally seeing a competitive team and excited as fuck about it.
need another reliever. Sandy acknowledged they tried to acquire one at the deadline but you can't have Alex Torres, Gilmartin and Torres as 3 of your arms and clearly not trust the first 2. Gee for a reliever would make a ton of sense.
Conforto needs to get some hits with this second chance
hope with Black? He looked so nasty last year. Is his velocity ok and he's just walking a ton of guys? Maybe send him to AA so he can work on getting his stuff right and not have to worry about the crazy PCL.
Maybe a reliever will pas through waivers that they can trade for

I think he's done. Not throwing strikes, velocity fluctuating from each appearance. How can the Mets throw a guy out there who struggles to throw strikes who one appearance will throw 96 and the next top off at 90? They already have Parnell in that boat.
Stauffer figures out what happened this year. He was solid last year. It's easy to blame the PCL for Black but the 51's have 16 pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings with a better FIP than Black. I mean Matt Bowman has mostly stunk this year yet his FIP is 5.08, Black 6.62. Don't see any reason Black should be at 6.62 with Gee at 3.64 and reasonably blame the PCL.
bone finally healed and he's been cleared. He could be a nice late August/September addition.
He certainly should but he was cleared before Sandy said he was still looking at a reliever at the deadline so he's likely being viewed as a bonus (around 9/1). Still think they need to add another.

of uribe and johnson, it gives the bench a much deeper bench. Once cuddy is back as well you can get him, Lagares, Flores, or Uribe as righties off the bench, on other days Johnson, conforto, and murphy/granderson as lefties.
Seems like he's been on the start of a nice little roll lately.
They barely use him and never use him in big spots. I'm not knocking him but his usage suggests otherwise. He's appeared in 16 games since the end of May totaling 16 total innings, for comparisons sake Carlos Torres (who was AWFUL in June has appeared in 18 games throwing 20.2 innings) and Alex Torres (who is awful in general) has appeared in 17 games throwing 15 innings. Not sure why they don't use Gilmartin more but they don't. If you recall I was all about taking Gilmartin before the draft, I'm not knocking him. I'm perplexed by his usage.
Torres 5.67 FIP yet... 39 games pitched 34.1 innings, Gilmartin 2.83 FIP 34 games pitched 31.2 innings. One has been truly HORRENDOUS and the other very good.
Gilmartin ahead of the Torres as far as hierchy as far as what we''Ve witnessed. Parnell has had two terrible outings now and it's clear even Collins is getting apprehensive. I'd have it Familia, Clippard, Robles, Gilmartin, Parnell, C, A as far as pecking order. It's not surprising many relievers haven't gotten into too many games lately with as good as the starters have been. I think Sandy brings in a reliever like Benoit and between Blevins, Verrett, and Goedell we will be in excellent shape.

on whether defense becomes less important the better your pitchers are (especially flyball high K pitchers). Intuitively I'd strongly suspect that if you add a bunch of Ks then defending against balls in play becomes less important.
After that he's a FA and odds are, he's going to want to hit the open market. I wish we'd just step up and really open the purses for him but I know the Wilpons won't.
We have to cut him 5 days after season is over which by rule means we cannot sign him until May unless we re-sign him but his agent will want him to test FA unless we drastically overpay
He has weird language written into his contract so that no team can offer him a QO that had him. In theory it makes sense for him but because the team is required to release him earlier than normal we wouldn't be able to re-sign until the middle of May. We do get 5 days after the end of the World Series to negotiate with him but after that we are frozen out I believe. Best we can do is make him a respectable offer but if he is dead set on testing free agency there isn't much we can do. At least thats how I understand it.

The way his contract was written, he was going to get traded more likely than not.
What a weird contract provision. Why on earth would anyone put that provision in their contract? Never seen that before. Just weird unless I'm missing something.

This way a team couldn't lower the market by placing a QO on him because otherwise the team would need to give up a 1st

Quickest way to FA. He's trying capitalize while still young. It's a little different with international FA's.
Btw mets offense are starting to feel like the '06 team. That team crushed bad pitching.

If we go on a great playoff run and he loves NY he'll want to work something out. If he does't we have Justin Upton and Jeyson Hayward on the market.
And like said, lots of moving parts. Conforto just crushed a homerun. What if he proves he is a starter and ready THIS year? Granderson has been fantastic. If he keeps it up his deal might actually be a bargain with only two years left. I don't know right now. All I know is the team rocks now and we have as good of a shot as anyone.

luckily this teams offense is much better than 06
i meant pitching
'06 team had good starting pitching but when Pedro and then el Duque went down, it really hurt their chances.
It's just that when he's bad, he's really, really bad.. like 6-8 ER bad. And we're seeing those every other/every 3rd start nowadays. He's still serviceable for now.. there's just not much of an in between
team in to the ground bad enough. I HATE this team. Its completely irrational living in SOFLO for so long living with those morons. Fuck the Marlins, Fuck their announcers, and Fuck their band wagon fans. And Fuck them for taking the playoffs away from us two seasons in a row on the last day of the year and popping champagne like they won something.
...and he has such a good experience here that we can just find a number and lock him up. I am going to be crushed if this dude leaves. I am getting super attached already.
to still finish in the top 5 in offense in the NL?? Haha.
The offense was so bad for 4 months, it's going to take a lot to get to the middle of the pack. All that matters is where they rank from this point forward.

Haha. I was totally joking. I think we are dead last. I know its never happening. Not this year. lol
the 7th. We can totally make this work and still have outstanding late inning defense.
If lagares gets a few late inning appearances for defense thats fine but other than that he should be glued to the bench, he was a blackhole in the lineup and if other guys keep producing lagares sits.
Cespedes is actually terrible against lefties. Check the splits. Lagares is probably an upgrade defensively and offensively against lefties anyway. Everybody should share a little time.
I do think 80% of the time its going to be Conforto-Cespedes-Granderson.

I'm just sick of lagares, swings at everything and has zero plate discipline. Conforto-cespedes-granderson is the outfield they should be using daily.

Even Conforto has terrible splits against lefties in the minors. Its all good. We have a lot of nice pieces now. Nobody wants to hear it but Cuddyer is going to be a nice piece off the bench. He's been a disaster of a signing but if you separate it out and now view him as a right-handed power bat with 8 HR on your bench it suddenly looks pretty damn good. The guy has owned lefties in his career and was having his best month when he got hurt. We are going to be able to matchup and make any pitcher in baseballs life a living hell in the real near future. Just stay healthy and lets get everyone back.
Do any of you guys remember when we were trying to acquire a SS before the 2014 season and Chris Owings was virtually "untouchable"?
Go look at the season he's having.
Sometimes baseball is all about the moves you don't make...
Yup. And we should be the poster for that. Remember when people here were suggesting trading Syndergaard for Ian Desmond? Remember when people were saying Syndergaard has mental makeup problems not 2 months ago? lol.

the under the radar moves like Gilmartin, Byrd, Hawkins, Dice-k Sandy actually does have a pretty good track record with. Uribe and Johnson was a steal IMO.

I think its finally clicking for the main stream media and fan. We know the ratings were through the roof last night. I think everyone knew about Harvey. Then deGrom from the all-star game. The whole world watched the game last night and realized, holy shit, they have THREE of them. They don't even know about Matz yet. ;)
It was a salary dump. Smart by Sandy to shop for depth a week out of the deadline, when everyone else was too concerned with big moves.
Overnight we've banished the Danny Munos. This team was forfeiting ABs all season with guys who were not MLB worthy. The depth is as big as the top line move.
We had no one to use in late game situations. We didn't have the luxury of using Lagares as a defensive replacement only, we weren't able to bring any sort of threatening hitter off the bench as a pinch hitter unless a regular had that day off (even then it was still unlikely)
The depth now compared to what it was 2 weeks ago is night and day. Huge, huge difference.
..is that we have a bunch of guys who can play multiple positions.
Flores can play 2B, SS, 3B.. Murphy can play 2B, 3B, KJ can play 1B, 2B, LF, RF (probably 3B in a pinch), Cespedes can play LF and CF, Granderson can play any OF position if need be.. just so much versatility.
week or so ago pointing to the odds of making the playoffs. "Cuz ya know.. we are going to have to play .650 ball the rest of the way to get to 90 wins.... yada yada yada. First place bitchezzz...... Ok Ill stop now.

That's so undervalued. When the A's had their crazy first half of the season last year, it wasn't because they had a bunch of superstar players, it was because they had a team full of complementary players and never had to put a bad player out on the field. Everyone was at least OK, even the players who came up from the minors to fill in for the DL.

We have that in spades now. Even Granderson and Cespedes are handling themselves in CF admirably which is shocking. Anybody upset with TDA getting a day off for Plawecki? A few of Uribe, Johnson, Cuddyer, ect are going to be coming off the bench every night.
It allows Collins to really play matchups. He's not really pigeonholed at any position. He has options around the entire diamond and across the OF. Makes a very big difference.
...Fair warning to Washington: This figured to be the most favorable pitching matchup of the series for the Marlins.
It turned into a mismatch quickly in the second inning when Conforto showed the power that made him the Mets' top draft pick in 2014 and No. 2 prospect in the organization by launching Koehler's 3-1 fastball 435 feet into the seats in right-center.
...
There was a decidedly New York state of mind at Marlins Park, as many transplanted Mets fans turned out for a glimpse at their retooled club that was coming off a sweep of the Nationals following a flurry of deals at the non-waiver trade deadline to gear up for a postseason push.
...
Koehler struck him (Flores) out with two runners on to end the first, the only moment of Marlins cheer all night. The rest was a crying shame certainly from a Nationals perspective.
waiver arm and I swear this team will have no weakness. And pretty awesome that HUGE pieces like Matz, Blevins, and hopefully Wright are on the horizon yet.

Seems like he has always had a little soft spot for NY, even named his daughter Shea because hit hot so well there and his fondness for the stadium.
it will be to have a bonafide, consistent, power threat in this lineup and they go hard and fast for one of these guys in the offseason. Cespedes truly completes this lineup. We are finally at a point where Duda can have a 0fer and have it be hidden instead of scrutinized.
I was thinking that too. Our hottest hitter took an 0-fer. The face of the franchise is on the DL and we put up 12 runs tonight. Cespedes does make a huge difference.
What can we do though? If we stress, we just run the risk of missing out on what could be a special few months.
Best we can hope for is that we make a fair offer. If he doesn't want it, they'll be other players out there. Our roster is only going to keep getting stronger as Herrera and Cecchini force there way on this team. The rotation will be stacked in April, not just coming together in August. We'll be loaded next year. And the days of evaluating are over. The window starts now. If we have a hole, Sandy will fill it.

finally not last in scoring as they overtook Miami with 385. Next up Phillies who are only 3 runs ahead. After that is Atlanta at 394. NL East, outside of Washington, is bad on a whole in terms of scoring.

Rockies
We'll see how the Nats will respond to the pressure for once.

Maybe you guys don't see it yet. Maybe you never will. I know Sandy won't be looking for credit.
We were a ship without a rudder before Sandy arrived. No plan. No long term direction. It pissed everyone off year after year trading away assets for players far away. It pissed everyone off picking high schoolers far away in the draft. It pissed everyone off being overly patient with players on our roster even though players like Duda, Lagares, and Flores have emerged from that. It probably pissed people off that we shopped in the bargain basement for a few years looking for Marlon Byrds that might even turn into more assets.
Suddenly, all the moves, all the wait is coming to an end. And its happening all at once. BAM. Like a ton of bricks. First round picks knocking on the door. Power pitching in spades. Assets to trade for hitters. Depth depth depth and this train might not stop until 2022. When have we EVER had something like this happen in the history of the Mets? The answer is never. And we owe it all to Sandy.

RE: RE: DW looks like he's packed on a lot of muscle.
I wonder if that's necessarily a good thing with a bad back.
I suspect that strengthening his core muscles and overall back muscles was part of his 2 month plus physical therapy. My assumption is that it will help compensate for the spinal stenosis and allow to him to deal with the rigors of a baseball season. I saw a clip of David running around on the baseball field fielding grounders the other day, and his back is huge and rocked up. He was working his butt off.

There have been plenty of supportive Mets fans during this rebuild.
As to when has something like this ever happened before. For any older fan that was as into the team during the late 70's and early 80's the 1984 season felt very similar. I believe last season I even mentioned in a couple threads how it reminded me of 83 and felt we were on the cusp of something special possibly happening with this young pitching staff.

It's probably a little too early for some of you. It is painfully obvious to me, the way his plan is coming together now and I'm sorry if it comes off over the top. No disrespect to teams in the 70s, I don't think they had close to the depth this team has or is about to have at both the minor league level and the big club.

Yeah, let's not disrespect those 70's teams.
The Von Trapp thing just made me literally laugh out loud
I missed yesterday's game but excited to see this team taking care of business against lesser teams. I'd caution that just 1 week ago we all had a somewhat similar feeling when we were up big on the Pads and looked to be cake walking through winning that series, but obviously the dynamic and talent level of this team has changed dramatically since then. For the first time in almost a decade this team is talented enough to scare people and do some damage, now it's up to Collins to push the right buttons to keep things on course.

LOL the late 70's teams had no depth! The point I was making was that during the late 70's and early 80's the Mets were playing far worse baseball than they have these past few seasons and then GM Frank Cashen brought in around 1980 orchestrated a similar turn around built on youth and a few veteran additions and they had a break out season in 84.
This is currently fun, so was that. Lets hope this team can end up as good as the 86 Mets.
To change the subject, the Mets have baseball's easiest schedule
but are closely followed by the Nats. The Giants, Cubs and Pirates - who are ahead of us for the Wild Card spot - all have more difficult schedules. Arguably, we've improved more since the end of July than our rivals and have significant players (Wright, Blevins, Matz) coming back from injury between now and early September. I'll list the win % of the Mets and the other NL contenders below. The numbers may include yesterday's game.
Mets - .455
Nats - .470
Cubs - .507
Pirates - .510
Giants - .519 Link - ( New Window )

Lol. Absolutely no "I told you so's". Just giving credit to Sandy. Totally see how it would come off over the top. I get it... Let's make the playoffs first... Let's win something first.... IMO we are talented as any team in the NL now and have as good of a shot as anyone. I don't need proof but it's all good. I'll pipe down now.
sucks the language in Cespedes contract. Every time I see the lineup with him in it I dream it was realistic he would be here next year and it's just not. Hopefully they make a run at someone like Upton etc to replace him though.
curious to see if they call anyone up before 9/1. Per the rules anyone called up after 8/31 is ineligible for the post-season so maybe we see a surprising name like Josh Smoker before 9/1.
While unlikely maybe he ends up loving playing in NYC and seeks to work something out and sign a deal with the Mets as a free agent. You just never know. Lets just hope that he plays so well here that we all will want him to stay. Good problem to have.

Problem is the language in his contract. He must be signed within 5 days of the WS or he CAN'T sign with the Mets even if they wanted to make him a great offer. There will be no negotiating with the Mets against other teams and his agent is Jay-Z who has shown ZERO inclination to be "loyal" to teams. So basically you have to believe the Mets make him an offer so incredible that he's convinced he doesn't want to even see what else is out there. I just don't see it as realistic (he's been talking about FA for 3 years now) part of the reason the Red Sox moved him.

Thanks to his weird contract, he couldn't resign here until May if we don't get it done by the time the world series ends.

I actually think the language in his contract increases the odds he resigns. If he likes it here, the team wins and he plays really well, and they decide to offer him a fair deal, he's got the pressure of a deadline just like we do. Maybe he blinks, maybe he doesn't. I don't know what the odds of his decision are in that instance but I do know that if he actually got to FA and teams could begin officially start bidding, we'd likely have no shot. Sure his agent will have an idea of what's out there, but he will have to pass on the Mets offer (again, presumably a situation he likes) knowing he can't shop himself and bring it back to them to match.

That's all I'm saying. I'm not being anti-Met or negative. Just realistic. With a normal contract I think we'd have some chance in retaining him. With his deal the odds have to be extremely low barring the Mets making him a MONSTER offer and he deciding he loves it so much he doesn't even want to speak to other teams.

I didn't realize his contract prohibited him from signing.
1)Why in the world did he want that in there, how does it benefit him?
2) Since it is his contract couldn't he waive that portion of it if he wanted to resign with the Mets, or at least give them a chance to come close in matching?
in the contract definitely lowers our odds of signing him, but if he wants to stay a Met and the Wilpons are willing to pay him, it's not impossible that something gets done. It would likely come down to the last day/hour, but I wouldn't write off the possibility of it.
Premature, but what type of contract would it take to get him? He turns 30 in October. Would something like 6yr/$145M get it done?
No sense in getting nuts over what will happen with Cespedes now. We just got him, let's enjoy the next couple months and see how far he can help us go this season.
Odds are slim he'll stay long-term but I'd rather just let myself at least believe it's possible for now. You never know.
sucks the language in Cespedes contract. Every time I see the lineup with him in it I dream it was realistic he would be here next year and it's just not. Hopefully they make a run at someone like Upton etc to replace him though.
Eric,
What pressure? He's getting his money either way. Even if he "loves" it here I'm sure in his mind he can love another place for monster money just the same (or the Yankees). Again, he's been on record for 3 years talking about how he knows his initial deal was below his value (half of Rusney Castillo's!). He's the one who fought to have that language in his contract and THEN signed with Jay-Z, a guy who had no problem sending Cano to Seattle.
curious to see if they call anyone up before 9/1. Per the rules anyone called up after 8/31 is ineligible for the post-season so maybe we see a surprising name like Josh Smoker before 9/1.
Yeah I brought this up the other day. One of the reasons I was hoping Conforto would get called up a day BEFORE rosters expand. I think we are good now though. Maybe you want somebody like Herrera on your bench in the playoffs? Problem is, there's no room with Uribe, Johnson, Cuddyer, ect now. Also Goedell, Blevins, Wright, and Matz all get injury exceptions so they are good.

Most guys have to play 6 years before they can become an UFA. Cespedes deal requires his team to release him after 4 years so he can become an FA. Under MLB rules, a player that gets released has to either sign with the team that released him before 5 days after the world series, or the team that released him can't sign him until May.
I believe the clause was actually put in there so that he'd be able to get out of Oakland. So it actually isn't even relevant or necessary now but it's not going to change.
The problem with Cespedes is we can offer him a totally fair deal. If he wants to test F/A he's going to test F/A. Hopefully he loves it here so much he forgets about free agency but I doubt it.

If he really loves being a Met why wouldn't he waive that portion just to give them as equal a chance as any other team in making an offer?
language was added to pressure whatever team he was on into making him a monster offer. Remember, when he signed with the A's (Marlins offered more money) he took less years to hit FA sooner. He didn't know he would actually be worth 130+ million etc, but he gambled the pressure on his team following 2015 would help him. Don't see how it's going to hurt him. If he's worth say 140 million to the Mets, he'll be worth that to other teams as well.

CBA doesn't allow for changes after the fact. This was closed after the A-Rod/Red Sox stuff.

That's all I meant. I was knocking the Mets in any way. Just saying if he wants to be a FA he won't be a Met. He's talked non-stop about FA for years now. So the "only" hope is the Mets playing so well he forgoes FA altogether. Possible? Ya never know. But unlikely.

I don't think anyone can waive a portion of their contract( could be wrong on this). I remember Arod didn't go to the Red Sox when they tried to something similar and the union stepped in:
'The Rangers initially agreed to a trade with the Boston Red Sox, but the Major League Baseball Players Association vetoed the deal because it called for a voluntary reduction in salary by Rodriguez.'
is (and someone who knows the CBA better correct me if I'm wrong) is that if he waived the provision, then he wouldn't be an FA and would be subject to arbitration for the next two years. He can't be an FA unless we waive him, and under MLB rules, you can't sign the guy 5 days after the world series if you waive him.
the "wait and see" approach with this team. Edgin went down, we went and got two more lefthanders. The bench didn't work out, we got a new one. Mejia didn't work out, we got a new set-up man. We needed a big bat, hell or high water, Sandy got one and was heavily involved with three.
I just think that's how its going to be from now on. If we dont sign Cespedes we'll be looking at somebody else whether in the offseason or even next years deadline again. Sandy knows what we have with this pitching.
has put his return date as August 15th against the Pirates, the Mets on the other hand are saying "wait and see".
Wow. Next week? Wouldn't that be something.
He told Eddie Coleman he expected to play the final 45 games. I don't buy it. They will work him into games slowly (their words). I'd guess late August.
1- In your hypothetical (that he doesn't care where he plays and just wants the most $) the language in the contract is a non-issue because we'd have no chance to resign Cespedes either way. This organization is not getting into aggressive bidding wars and certainly not winning them. If JayZ/Cespedes are of the Ndamakung Suh mindset, we have no chance regardless of anything that plays out.
2 - Cano and JayZ IMO entered FA with a different strategy. As I recall they were doing everything they could to up the Yankees offer, I think most would agree he didn't want to leave and was only leaving for a dramatically bigger $. It took a month for Seattle to bring up the price on the deal they eventually made. The Yankees slow played him and had there been a deadline prior to FA where they had just made their best offer he might not have left. Especially if he thought he was depressing his own market by walking away from one of the most aggressive possible suitors who would no longer be able to bid for his services.
3- JayZ hasn't been around long enough to truly develop a track record, but I think he has shown a desire to get his clients into big markets. Also Victor Cruz and Dez Bryant both resigned before testing FA presumably because they were both in good situations in big markets.
If Cespedes plays really well here, the team wins, and he enjoys the NY stage (plus all the exposure and off the field opportunities that come with it) I think he would have to give serious consideration to a fair offer. Whether or not the Mets submit (or can submit) a fair offer is very much open to debate.
hopes to be back this weekend but admitted he hasn't started running yet so I'm guessing it will be a bit longer. Should make the bench deeper but I really don't want to see him starting over the guys we have unless it's an injury issue.
and play like his old self that would be a huge addition at this point and only make the bench that much stronger yet. I assume Campbell would be sent down. That would be some upgrade adding DW and subtracting Campbell.

Eric we will have to agree to disagree here. The Red Sox moved him because they knew he wanted to test FA despite being open to giving him an extension. I think even the most optimistic of fans (even ZGiants) agree that him bypassing FA is a long shot scenario.

They should DFA Campbell, he's a waste of a 40 man spot. Trade for Valencia and deal Gee for a reliever. Hopefully Goedell can help as well but I'd like someone proven without a ridiculously long injury history (Goeddel's had 3 elbow surgeries already).

I hope it happens but unless Conforto goes on a real consistent tear I really don't see Collins benching Cuddyer.

Hey, if Cuddyer hits then so be it. Not time for player development. Cuddyer just HASN'T hit and Conforto hasn't really had a chance to. I obviously prefer the best guys in there. PS Wilmer needs to play more, suddenly Tejada sucking has been ignored. He's back to being horrendous.
Dan - it may be a long shot scenario, but what's longer?
a) The Mets paying top dollar in a FA bidding war
b) A player deciding to accept a big/fair deal with no guarantee to get something better after a deadline
I personally think A is a much bigger long shot and the deadline puts pressure on Cespedes to say no to something he won't be able to get back.
Cuddyer should play almost exclusively against lefties for the rest of this season. The contract/1st round pick is a sunk cost. Let's at least hope Cuddyer can fit into the mix and play a positive role on the team the rest of the way.
I'm thrilled and excited with the makeup of this team and specifically the young guys and other pitchers.
My laughing was more about maybe finishing a season above .500 before proclaiming the dynasty is going to extend to 2022. And while I love the trades Sandy has made I outlined before how the bulk of the contributors on this roster were Omar draft picks or signings, so saying we "owe it all to Sandy" seems strange.
Lastly, the team was a game 7 away from the World Series in 2006.
This never pissed me off:
Quote:
It pissed everyone off year after year trading away assets for players far away.
In fact, I preferred it to the opposite of holding on to guys too long or acquiring players with false hopes of contending
This never pissed me off:
Quote:
It pissed everyone off picking high schoolers far away in the draft.
Giving up picks for some free agents bothered me, but Omar drafted Harvey, Ike Davis, Reese Havens, Pelfrey, Humber all out of college, and Sandy drafted Nimmo, Cecchini and Smith out of HS, with his first three first round picks, so you contradict yourself
This bothered me, but I view it as much the manager as the FO.
Quote:
It pissed everyone off being overly patient with players on our roster even though players like Duda, Lagares, and Flores have emerged from that.
and this only bothers me when there are better options that are avoided due to money and that's on ownership (and possibly the FO).
Quote:
It probably pissed people off that we shopped in the bargain basement for a few years looking for Marlon Byrds that might even turn into more assets.

Eric,
I think both are unlikely but I actually (believe it or not) think it's more likely the Mets would be willing to pay up (within reason) on Cespedes than I do Cespedes bypassing FA. I don't think any big FA needs to "know" what's out there. A consistent 3 WAR OF with power, on pace for a 5 WAR reason is getting his sheckles. There is zero doubt in my mind he's getting his money, as will David Price, Heyward, Greinke etc. The top guys always get theirs. The mid-tier guys sometimes are left out in the cold (so to speak).

I don't love this idea for one simple reason... are we going to bench Granderson or Duda vs. a tough lefty in the playoffs? Are we going to bench them vs. a tough lefty in a big series? If the answer is no then I want them facing some lefties. Maybe not guys they have poor numbers against but this lineup looks FAR worse with Cuddyer in there over Duda.

Yeah that will be the big question. If he does mesh well and helps the team win do the Mets make him the type of offer that he would accept? If he proves himself in NY better to pay him than hope to find someone for a little less and end up with another Bay situation.
Shecky,
Don't know where you are but remember my concerns with the 2015 Cyclones having almost no talent prospect wise? They have 3 regulars posting an OPS over .700 lol One is 22 next month, one is 24 in December
any chance they keep conforto up for the final two months? especially if he hits over the next week?
If he keeps hitting I don't see why not but there comes a point where he's better off playing than not. I personally think he's going to hit if he's given a chance. I'm not suggesting he should be in there if he struggles but I think he's "ready".
In some ways the Mets are advantaged by the contract clause
It keeps us out of a bidding war. After the season we can go to him and make our best offer. He may feel that there is more money to be made elsewhere, but if NY is a good situation he may just go with us.
Funny thing is that there is a shit-ton of OF talent available this year in FA. Upton and Heyward are a bit younger (though YC doesnt cost you a pick). Alex Gordon is sure to opt-out. Span plays CF. Chris Davis can play OF. 2017 UFAs including Gomez may become available in trades. And then you ask how many teams are really in the market to pay $20 million to an OF -- he may get his $20+ million but it could be to languish on a team he doesnt really want to be on or in a city he doesnt want to live in.
Drinking my own kool aid for sure, but there is a lot of reason to believe that he gets done in NY if the Wilpons are willing to have a 2nd $100+ million player.

Just like the big club... lol
Good news there are some prospects to watch that will come through there in the next year or so. No future can't miss types, but fun guys to watch.
Terry was effusive in commenting on him last night. I saw it on SNY, but it was really high praise -- essentially said he'll be a star hitter once he has a bit of seasoning.

First time in about 10 years I haven't gone to a Cyclones game and all due respect to Vinny Siena, I'm not inspired to lol

His OBP after the game is .393. Probably one of the few guys on the team who actually practices what the Mets preach about their hitting philosophy. Not bad to have a guy with his ability hitting 8th.
but looking at our dead money is really depressing. I didnt know we were paying Sabes $250k/year. We owe 12.5 million to the Yankees' OF (Beltran). My favorite though is $129k in dead money to Kirk, who is on the fucking team. Link - ( New Window )
Adam Rubin @AdamRubinESPN
Beginning next season, #Mets' affiliate in the South Atlantic League will be known as the Columbia (S.C.) Fireflies. Moving from Savannah.
He is going to be such a good hitter, I tell ya, the Mets manager said. When he gets around this league, gets used to the pitching, he is going to be a dynamic offensive player.
Going to Hilton Head next week for the whole week with my wife's side of the family. It just occurred to me that I'd be 30 minutes away from the Sand Gnats. None of the pitchers stand out to me (looks like Prevost is on the DL), but I recognize a bunch of the hitters (Farcia, Guillorme, Becerra).

Another crappy roster prospect wise especially with Wieck and Meisner traded. You might get to see Luis Mateo who is once again rehabbing. Scouts like Duff as a potential MLB reliever, Baldonado has a bit of Alvarez to him but yeah BK and Savannah unusually crappy this season.
Defeaning silence. Educated speculation is one more season in Binghamton and then moving, but unannounced. https://twitter.com/abhijitg/status/628585403050795008
Cuddyer at best will platoon with Conforto against tough lefties, ect. Really cant see him taking a spot back and I think they were pretty much going that way even before he went on the DL.
That said, Conforto does need to keep producing. Either way, I think Cuddyer will be a nice piece off the bench. I mean going from Cambell to Cuddyer has to be an upgrade.
He's got power to all fields. Would LOVE to resign him. Didn't know how fast he was and he hurt Rienzo at homeplate.
I had no idea of his speed either. I also had gotten the wrong impression from things I read that he wasn't as good a fielder as he has shown. It is a small sample size but he has played a nice CF and I wasn't expecting that.
Again a small sample size but he appears to be exactly what this team needs. If he proves himself in NY I certainly hope the Mets make him a sizable offer to stay.
Agreed to a deal with a group who planned to move them to Delaware, backed out but a court ruled in favor of the Florida based Delaware group. Sale price was reportedly 8.5 million, which is a reminder why Fred buying a team and moving them (for AAA) is unlikely.
I knew he was a good athlete but he has some jets. No reason he can't patrol CF effectively when asked to do so. His arm is outrageous.
I'd like to see the Mets at least step up to the plate and make him a serious offer in their signing window. Say 6/$126M. Maybe he passes but that's a more than respectable contract.
I can barely envision Fred signing off on the $126M. When you throw out numbers like 140M+ I cringe. It will probably take that to get it done. At least we'll have tried and that will also signal to guys like Upton, etc we are serious players heading into FA.
His ability to hit for XBH has put him in the Harper/Trout class
After last night I think he's 1-2 extra base hits behind Bryce Harper depending on what the Nats lineup did last night.
He's that good. The only thing that MIGHT affect his contract is that he's already 29 years old.
Thing is Choo was turning 31, Ellsbury turning 30. Ellsbury got 7 years 153, Choo got 7 years 130. I think we would all agree while Cespedes isn't a Trout/Stanton. He's most certainly in this "tier 2" level of offensive player. 7 years minimum 140 minimum is my guess for him.
Everybody comes back. Wright, Cuddyer, Blevins, and Matz. Id say Goedell too but Ill leave him out for now. How do we fit these guys in for the playoffs?
Cuddyer replaces Cambell. That's the easy part.
Wright? Getting tricky now. Who else is there? Go shorter in the bullpen? Send down Conforto?
Matz. Also tricky. Likely go with a 6 man rotation for a while so that's another reliever gone.
Blevins. Hopefully replaces A. Torres.
Looks like our bullpen/bench might have a difficult crunch coming up end of August and in the playoffs.

Yeah, I agree. What sandy said at the time of the trade makes me feel like there might be an offer coming. Apparently Joel Sherman said Jeff had a hand in urging Sandy to pull the trigger on this. And attendance and TV is trending up, and Wright being the only $100m player on the roster with a cloud over his future maybe leads them to make a commitment. I hope. Lots.

Conforto almost certainly goes down if Wright comes back and Cuddyer comes back unless Lagares is on the DL. I mean
Cespedes, Lagares, Granderson, Cuddyer. Conforto likely will never play as the 5th OF. No way a short pen, it's getting overworked as it is. Could use another arm.
Cespedes has to like the idea of playing for a perennial contender. If he stays combined with our pitching we have an extended championship window. Maybe these factors can influence the negotiations in some small way in our favor.
Thing is, we couldn't get Parra for the price the O's paid because there's no way we were dealing with MIL again after the Gomez fiasco. We were talking to them about Parra before Gomez from most reports and they wanted a heftier price. They overplayed their hand on him and had to take less in the end.
I'm fine with how it worked out, we got the best available bat and added really solid depth. We're good health, a reliever and a spare part away from being a complete team that can beat anyone.
Anyone have a solid estimate of how much additional
think is age is just one of those things you either accept or you don't. I don't think it effects his years at all. 7 or even 8 years is possible here. Basically understanding it's going to "hurt" at the end.
Cano 10 years at 31 years old
Miggy 8 years at 32 (+ a vested option)
Pujols 10 years at 32
Votto 10 years at 30
etc etc. I mean even Wright 8 for 138 at 30 years old
Steve there are too many factors we just don't have access too...
...to venture an accurate projection of how much more revenue a sold out Mets contender will generate. At best you can speculate it will be a significant amount in the tens of millions over the course of the season if we continue winning.

See Im not so sure Dan. If Conforto rips off a productive 2 weeks I think he's almost your starting LF already. Collins has already said Cespedes will play CF against righthanders which actually tells me they are giving him the opportunity to seize LF. If they time it right maybe they only go short in the pen for a day or two before rosters expand in September. Then maybe in the playoffs you leave somebody like Colon off completely leaving his spot for a bullpen piece again.
Meanwhile, you told us there would be "no way" Wilpon would let Wright play for Mets again. That the Mets would get a "board of directors" of doctors to prevent him from stepping on the field again. Well guess what? He's doing baseball related activities, and if the insurance payments haven't stopped yet (based on his level of activities), they will real soon.
think Cuddyer is still going to play more than most of us would like. I'm not saying if he absolutely sucks they don't pull the plug but I think assuming he comes back "healthy" he's going to be starting a few times per week.
The DL stints don't seem to slow him down. He comes back and within a couple of days starts raking all over again. If this guy can stay healthy he's a major weapon. If.

If he can stay healthy he is going to be a star.
He can hit, he calls a good game, he appears to be a natural leader, and he is very well spoken.
No. 9/1 rosters expand but playoff roster is 25 players. Players need to either be on the DL or on the big league roster before 9/1 to be playoff eligible.
he's mentioned it too often, but are we so sure that the clause in his contract can't be waived? This is NOT like the Red Sox with A-Rod, the MLBPA objected because A-Rod would have ended up with slightly less money. In this case, having his host team in on the bidding only helps Cespedes, and by extension, the MLBPA. And once Cespedes contract expires, how would the clause even be enforceable?
Not that it matters anyway, I can't see the Wilpons opening the purse strings to that extent.
hate to dump on an injured player but Lagares sucks ball right now. He and Tejada are black holes.
It has to be injuries with Lagares because the drop off from last season is astonishing.
Rubin had a real nice July. I'm curious to see if he can put together two nice months in a row.
Ruben Tejada "real nice July" still gave him a .646 OPS since July 1st (last 28 games). Last 8 games he's been especially bad 160/192/200. All that's changed is his BABIP was inflated and now it's coming back down to earth.
RE: I find it highly unlikely that Cespedes gives up FA,
he's mentioned it too often, but are we so sure that the clause in his contract can't be waived? It can't be. It's that very clause that makes him a FA. Otherwise he doesn't have the service time. His "release" and the Mets relinquishing their rights to him are what allow him to talk to other teams and why the Mets can't talk to him again until Mid-May. If he waives it he's not eligible to be a FA.
RE: I find it highly unlikely that Cespedes gives up FA,

A lot probably depends on how well the Mets do this season.
If they fail to make the playoff's I doubt the offer him what it would take to stay.
If they make the playoffs but lose the first series probably will offer him something close but not enough unless he falls in love with NY and wants to be part of this teams bright future and chooses to take less.
If they could somehow manage to actually make it the WS but lost I say the odds are 50/50
If they miraculously win the WS I think they would throw enough money at him to ensure he signs.
YC will just have to make a decision on whether he wants to be here on an ascendent team or not. We're not going to offer him $23x8years. He may get that elsehwere, but few teams present him with a better chance to win over the next 5 or so years. With all the FA OFs, what if the money is there for him, but he'll have to be a Philly or Padre?
I'd be wary of taking on too many years on anyone. I agree with the premise that you assume that the deal goes south at the end. Well years 5, 6, 7, 8 are when we're really going to have to pay for guys like Harvey (frankly, I assume he leaves), deGrom, Thor, Wheeler, and Matz. And hopefully Conforto and Flores.
usually never works (and less likely to work with a guy who is "older" and got underpaid on his first deal) but I'd love to see the Mets offer him a MONSTER AAV at lower years. 4 years 100 million or something. Even then I bet he says no because odds are in 4 years he's unlikely to be worth significantly "more than" the 40-50 additional he can get guaranteed right now.
the Mets are suddenly thin in minor league pitching I'd like to see them get more aggressive on the IFA market (not necessarily this guy) who seemingly will cost beyond his worth with no limits but they have basically ignored IFA pitchers yet cleared out Mazzoni, Wieck, Fulmer, Meisner, Cessa, Whalen and Gant since the season began and "lost" Bowman and Ynoa to very disappointing seasons and Tapia (a reliever), Leathersich (a reliever) and Taylor to TJ
So players get 60% of only the first 3 games, and then I assume they're stiffed. That means that in a 4 game series, the players get 180% of 1 game of ticket receipts (3x60%) while the owners get 220% (3x40%+100%); a 7 game series nets the owners way more -- 520%. This doesnt say anything about concessions, parking etc, which I assume the players dont touch.
Lets start guessing. Assume if the players get $63 million, owners get double that (assuming 5-6 game series) = $125 million. 15 series * 5.5 games/series (guess) * 42,000 fans * $15/fan spent on food/parking/stuff (conservative guess) = $62 million in revenue. So 125+63 = $188 million in revenue divided by 30 (15 series, 2 games per series) = total guess but teams generate at least $6.2 million in revenue per team per round, net of payments to MLB and players. This is probably very conservative -- so say it is 6-10 million. One round isnt a franchise changer. Playing in a world series is a big deal.
Plus remember they own like 65% of SNY which will get more viewers; not clear how far in advance they do the ad sales, but it is relevant for next year too. And of course they'll sell a lot more tickets by contending and not sucking.
MLB.com's Mets top 10 pitching prospects is now very ugly lol
should be focused on replenishing the arms in low ball. Ideally paired with a college CF or two who will sign below bonus. We could use a CF prospect high up in the system other than Nimmo.
What's the latest with Molina? I believed he was evaluated in May for TJ, but I've heard nothing since. Wouldn't a determination be made by now after 3 months?

Adam Rubin last reported "nothing new". Shecky who seemingly has someone on the inside said something similar a few months ago. He last pitched 5/13, the feeling was he wouldn't be back until 2017 regardless of when they did the surgery so they would hold off. At this point it's a lost season, until we hear otherwise likely TJ.
...and we discount his 'paternity' start he's been so much better than expected. Niese has given us all reason to be confident we have a good chance to get a 'W' when he takes the ball. Who would have predicted that 2 months ago?
Interesting... just thought it was a long wait. Maybe Molina avoids
But I think the fact that they were able to keep Wheeler is huge. Now they have another starter coming back around the All Star break in case. And maybe Montero sooner.
Colon's innings have to be replaced somehow next year.

He is pitching very well. Plus you have the added benefit of his being a lefty. I wonder if they have considered starting him in-between two hard throwing righties like deGrom and Noah. Seems like if would benefit both he and whichever righty was pitching after him.
Colon's innings should be replaced by Matz. Niese is 5th starter until all-star break, and then Wheeler comes back and Montero will be in the mix.
that's 7 starters (in no particular order).
Harvey
deGrom
Thor
Matz
Niese
Wheeler
Montero
Not sure what happens with Gee, I don't expect him to get a QO if he's a FA, if he's just arb eligible not sure how that works if he finishes in the minors. he'd be nice insurance as the 7th/8th starter depending on if before or after Wheeler's return.
Figure 8 or 9 starters deep is what they need to be.
RE: You could do alot worse than Jon Niese as your 5th starter.

I don't see why Colon's innings have to be replaced? Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard will have no innings limit. Matz, Niese, and Wheeler for the final two spots? Plenty of innings to go around.

Keeping all three didn't seem possible to me, but I'm glad they did it.
Now, the question is what happens next year. If they don't shell out some money to keep some offensive pieces, they'll have to deal for bats again.
I'm not too worried about Wheeler's weight. Lincecum won 2 CY's with that tiny frame. Chris Sale is a stick and is a K-machine. Doesn't seem to matter too much.
I still believe in him. If his arm is ok, long term it doesnt make a lot of sense to have Matz or Wheeler as the #5 starter (though my guess is we'll almost always have one of the big 5 arms on the DL -- nature of the game). A healthy, effective Wheeler dealt in 2016 or 2017 could bring back a good bat or restock the system with arms.
is absolutely NO CHANCE Dillon Gee is a Met next year. None. They aren't paying Dillon Gee roughly 6 million to be an extra starter. He and Parnell are goners. I guess Parnell could be so bad that he comes back on a minor league deal but they are gone. Colon is gone, Murphy more likely than not gone, Tejada likely gone, Uribe and Johnson likely gone due to price, Clippard gone
wright at third and U.S. Transitioning to Cheech and Herrera in the middle. That will allow us to spend on somebody like Cespedes without issue.
30 million alone is coming off the books from Colon, Parnell, Gee, and Murphy. Very possible even more if we trade Niese in June to clear a spot for Wheeler.

Yeah. I'm actually more worried about deGroms. Looks like a feather could knock him over. Hopefully they are fine.

Tejada is interesting -- may need to arb him for 1 year to bridge the gap. Who plays SS next year if he's gone? Too early for Cecc to start the season in Queens. I think Herrera breaks camp as the 2B and that Flores will roam all over -- picking up 400-600 ABs in a Zobrist type role (3B for 4 weeks when X is hurt, then 2B for 2 weeks when Y isnt hitting...). Maybe Flores holds down SS until Cecc comes up, but it's risky. They dont like Wilmer at SS.
I could see Johnson resigned if he doesnt need more than the $1.5 he makes this year.

Tejada at 3ish million seems steep to me but that's possible (sad) but possible. Uribe most certainly finds guaranteed playing time somewhere so unless the Mets give him 2b (really unlikely with Flores and Herrera here) OR Wright shockingly retires it's hard to see him coming back. It would be disappointing but I'm personally expecting Zobrist to replace Cespedes.
and 3 million makes me want to vomit. But I feel like we're going to need someone who can credibly play SS in case the other untested options fall through. And I doubt we'll get a significant savings on a UFA SS. Maybe we can find a PEDs/injury guy who will take a 1 year deal.
finishes really strong I could see Tejada brought back just as a place holder for a couple months and then he'd return to his backup middle infield position for the rest of the year.
dollar salar, and find a cheaper arm to bridge until Wheeler is ready. Or maybe go Montero/Verrett in the 5th spot. With an extra 9 million off the books, resign Cespedes or sign Upton.

Cespedes has a lower OPS than Parra. Worse player. Mets fucked up their asset management.
I assume this was radar?
Need you ask? LOL, of course it was that nitwit...
I never said this but I wouldn't expect much less from this trio of dimwits. I said the Mets paid more for a Cespedes rental despite Para having a similar season.
35, 42 (YC debut), 36. The Niese SD game was 35, and the Colon game was 24. Harvey vs LAD was 40 (weekend). Attendance is already up from 26.5 last year to 30.25 this year. If we can average 35 per the rest of the way over the remaining 25 home games we'll get to 2.6 million, 31.7k/game and +421k over 2014.
Next year's projections are more important. They'll sell more tickets. With these pitchers, a season ticket makes a lot of sense. 37k per game gets you 3 million for the season. We top out at 3.65 million -- Citi is smaller than Shea, where we cracked 4 million in 2008. We drew 3.169 million in 2009, which was a 70 win year but also the first year of Citi.
Actually, you claimed it was a "massive overpay" and also said that Cespedes had inflated numbers because of a "great lineup" and "one great month". I guess our lineup is murderers row as well because the change sure didn't seem to effect him last night.
And you basically said it was a bad move because of poor asset management. We'll see how long you cling onto that one.

Kelly Johnson's versatility seems to be understated. I would try to re-sign between him and Uribe. He could be a poor man's Zobrist with worse defense and hitting.
Between Johnson and Flores, that's supersubs to cover everything except CF and C. It would be hugely valuable.
Also, we need to stop bickering over the price we paid for Ces. I thought it was very steep, but what's done is done and Im happy to root for the new guy. And frankly, even if you didnt like the deal at the time, the 4 game standings swing vis a vis the Nats should at least have you rethinking that. I'd have liked the move a lot more if we were even or +1 vs DC.

Wright came up in 2004.. 05 we added Pedro and Beltran but Beltran had a down year and the team wasn't very good.
09 was a mess. First year at Citi, tons of injuries. That was the Castillo dropped fly ball year. Fernando Nieve was getting starts for us that season.

I know he came up in 04, but he got to have a taste of winning pretty early was the point. It's just a great shame that he wasted his healthy years on garbage ball, and now he may or may not be the same going forward.
Good call!
LOL...
If you paid for an education i suggest asking for refund as none of what you posted is true. Learn to to read and maybe thinking won't be too far behind.
sounds great in theory but like we mentioned earlier, how do you keep him on the roster? Cuddyer and Wright likely do replace Cambell and Conforto unless you are very creative. So who does Davis replace? Uribe? Johnson? Flores? I just don't see a spot unless you are solely acquiring him for September.

I worry about that when all of these guys are here and healthy. They are already walking back David Wright's timeframe saying he will play at least 5 rehab games and then reassess so 8/15 aint happening. Win games, worry later.

Yup. And against lefties.... Uribe kills them. Cuddyer has historically killed them. If Wright comes back, he kills them. Lagares is actually decent against lefties.
Also: Zack Wheeler in the house. He drove down from Port St. Lucie to visit his #Mets teammates (still his Mets teammates) in Miami.
By all reports he is a great guy and has made a great clubhouse that much better. So i am not expecting any negative impact, but I am just curious.

Yet to see a good picture of Harvey, deGrom, Matz, Syndergaard, and Wheeler. Maybe they'll all be chilling tonight. lol
I know they have made it this far with him, but Gilmartin has pitched four times in a month.

Nah. He hasn't seen a full season of plate appearances since 2010. He's bee a part-timer for a while. That's what he is.
Ill take 3 run ball from Colon tonight. If he cant even do that, against this team, forget it. He needs to go.

Thats what happens when your starters are going 7/8 innings almost every night and you have an all-star break in between.

Gotta say, it's been the wildest and probably best week to be a Mets fan since Citi Field opened.
Citi Field definitely had a Nassau Coliseum Islander vibe to it this weekend. Long suffering fanbase finally seeing a competitive team and excited as fuck about it.
I think he's done. Not throwing strikes, velocity fluctuating from each appearance. How can the Mets throw a guy out there who struggles to throw strikes who one appearance will throw 96 and the next top off at 90? They already have Parnell in that boat.
He certainly should but he was cleared before Sandy said he was still looking at a reliever at the deadline so he's likely being viewed as a bonus (around 9/1). Still think they need to add another.

resumed throwing today (per Rubin).

Let's hope he doesn't experience any significant soreness after the session...
NONE
They barely use him and never use him in big spots. I'm not knocking him but his usage suggests otherwise. He's appeared in 16 games since the end of May totaling 16 total innings, for comparisons sake Carlos Torres (who was AWFUL in June has appeared in 18 games throwing 20.2 innings) and Alex Torres (who is awful in general) has appeared in 17 games throwing 15 innings. Not sure why they don't use Gilmartin more but they don't. If you recall I was all about taking Gilmartin before the draft, I'm not knocking him. I'm perplexed by his usage.

What a dumb comment
He has a buyout I thought.
Wilma!!!
Or almost should I say

The way his contract was written, he was going to get traded more likely than not.

Haha. Im sure everyone is sick of hearing it. I get like this every time we play them. lol
I want a blow out win to help their run differential.
The offense was so bad for 4 months, it's going to take a lot to get to the middle of the pack. All that matters is where they rank from this point forward.

As far as that its only a matter of time. With our pitching and offense now that number is going to be looking pretty nice in the near future.

If lagares gets a few late inning appearances for defense thats fine but other than that he should be glued to the bench, he was a blackhole in the lineup and if other guys keep producing lagares sits.
I do think 80% of the time its going to be Conforto-Cespedes-Granderson.
I do think 80% of the time its going to be Conforto-Cespedes-Granderson.
I'm just sick of lagares, swings at everything and has zero plate discipline. Conforto-cespedes-granderson is the outfield they should be using daily.
Nice. Sole possession of first. I hope we never give it up.
Go look at the season he's having.

Cespedes is actually terrible against lefties. Check the splits. Lagares is probably an upgrade defensively and offensively against lefties anyway. Everybody should share a little time.

Yup. And we should be the poster for that. Remember when people here were suggesting trading Syndergaard for Ian Desmond? Remember when people were saying Syndergaard has mental makeup problems not 2 months ago? lol.

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaarry
Overnight we've banished the Danny Munos. This team was forfeiting ABs all season with guys who were not MLB worthy. The depth is as big as the top line move.
The depth now compared to what it was 2 weeks ago is night and day. Huge, huge difference.
Flores can play 2B, SS, 3B.. Murphy can play 2B, 3B, KJ can play 1B, 2B, LF, RF (probably 3B in a pinch), Cespedes can play LF and CF, Granderson can play any OF position if need be.. just so much versatility.

Sandy deserves a lot of credit

Seems like he has always had a little soft spot for NY, even named his daughter Shea because hit hot so well there and his fondness for the stadium.
I think the dark days are possibly finally behind us.
Keep rolling boys!

3.) Cespedes
4.) Duda
5.) Wright
6.) TDA
7.) Conforto
8.) Flores
I wonder if that's necessarily a good thing with a bad back.
Yeah was going to say. He's been excellent lately. Probably wouldn't kill us if needed to skip somebody here or there.

Just use this same lineup and more likely than not they'll bail out Gee.
I know I said my goal for this year was meaningful September baseball, but right now I'm thrilled with meaningful August baseball.
Jeez, Conforto's on base percentage after tonight is .393.

Yeah, let's not disrespect those 70's teams.

They will need to prove they can win consistently on the road to finish out the season to really have a good chance.
Quote:
While unlikely maybe he ends up loving playing in NYC and seeks to work something out and sign a deal with the Mets as a free agent. You just never know. Lets just hope that he plays so well here that we all will want him to stay. Good problem to have.

I didn't realize his contract prohibited him from signing.
1)Why in the world did he want that in there, how does it benefit him?
2) Since it is his contract couldn't he waive that portion of it if he wanted to resign with the Mets, or at least give them a chance to come close in matching?
Premature, but what type of contract would it take to get him? He turns 30 in October. Would something like 6yr/$145M get it done?
Odds are slim he'll stay long-term but I'd rather just let myself at least believe it's possible for now. You never know.

sucks the language in Cespedes contract. Every time I see the lineup with him in it I dream it was realistic he would be here next year and it's just not. Hopefully they make a run at someone like Upton etc to replace him though.

Eric,
What pressure? He's getting his money either way. Even if he "loves" it here I'm sure in his mind he can love another place for monster money just the same (or the Yankees). Again, he's been on record for 3 years talking about how he knows his initial deal was below his value (half of Rusney Castillo's!). He's the one who fought to have that language in his contract and THEN signed with Jay-Z, a guy who had no problem sending Cano to Seattle.

If he really loves being a Met why wouldn't he waive that portion just to give them as equal a chance as any other team in making an offer?
Quote:
I believe the clause was actually put in there so that he'd be able to get out of Oakland. So it actually isn't even relevant or necessary now but it's not going to change.

Maybe deserves another chance soon
I just think that's how its going to be from now on. If we dont sign Cespedes we'll be looking at somebody else whether in the offseason or even next years deadline again. Sandy knows what we have with this pitching.
Wow. Next week? Wouldn't that be something.

He told Eddie Coleman he expected to play the final 45 games. I don't buy it. They will work him into games slowly (their words). I'd guess late August.

Quote:
hopes to be back this weekend but admitted he hasn't started running yet so I'm guessing it will be a bit longer. Should make the bench deeper but I really don't want to see him starting over the guys we have unless it's an injury issue.

He's back to being horrendous.
b) A player deciding to accept a big/fair deal with no guarantee to get something better after a deadline
I personally think A is a much bigger long shot and the deadline puts pressure on Cespedes to say no to something he won't be able to get back.
In fact, I preferred it to the opposite of holding on to guys too long or acquiring players with false hopes of contending
This never pissed me off:
Giving up picks for some free agents bothered me, but Omar drafted Harvey, Ike Davis, Reese Havens, Pelfrey, Humber all out of college, and Sandy drafted Nimmo, Cecchini and Smith out of HS, with his first three first round picks, so you contradict yourself
This bothered me, but I view it as much the manager as the FO.
and this only bothers me when there are better options that are avoided due to money and that's on ownership (and possibly the FO).
b) A player deciding to accept a big/fair deal with no guarantee to get something better after a deadline

Eric,
I think both are unlikely but I actually (believe it or not) think it's more likely the Mets would be willing to pay up (within reason) on Cespedes than I do Cespedes bypassing FA.

Don't know where you are but remember my concerns with the 2015 Cyclones having almost no talent prospect wise? They have 3 regulars posting an OPS over .700 lol One is 22 next month, one is 24 in December
http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=t_ibp&cid=453
If he keeps hitting I don't see why not but there comes a point where he's better off playing than not. I personally think he's going to hit if he's given a chance. I'm not suggesting he should be in there if he struggles but I think he's "ready".

Beginning next season, #Mets' affiliate in the South Atlantic League will be known as the Columbia (S.C.) Fireflies. Moving from Savannah.
It loses a little on paper.

The hardest throwing team in MLB has made the World Series 3 out of last 4 years
Royals 2014
Cards 2013
Rangers 2011
Daren Willman
Highest % of pitches 95MPH+ since 2008
2015 Mets 22.8%
2009 Tigers 17.6
2014 Royals 16.2
2014 Marlins 14.8
2012 Rays 14.6
2015 Indians 13.4
Another crappy roster prospect wise especially with Wieck and Meisner traded. You might get to see Luis Mateo who is once again rehabbing. Scouts like Duff as a potential MLB reliever, Baldonado has a bit of Alvarez to him but yeah BK and Savannah unusually crappy this season.
He's got power to all fields. Would LOVE to resign him. Didn't know how fast he was and he hurt Rienzo at homeplate.
So this is happening? Wow, they were at Bing for so long.
Quote:
Adam seems to think Bing is headed to Delaware too. I hope they get a cooler name. D-Mets doesn't sound that cool
So this is happening? Wow, they were at Bing for so long.
Adam is of the belief the Bing owners would have issued a statement saying it's false if they were in fact staying.
Crisis averted..
That said, Conforto does need to keep producing. Either way, I think Cuddyer will be a nice piece off the bench. I mean going from Cambell to Cuddyer has to be an upgrade.

Not even the worst opinion I've read on here the last three days.
For the crap price Parra cost it wouldn't have been a horrible idea to bring in both.
I'd like to see the Mets at least step up to the plate and make him a serious offer in their signing window. Say 6/$126M. Maybe he passes but that's a more than respectable contract.

I'm fine with how it worked out, we got the best available bat and added really solid depth. We're good health, a reliever and a spare part away from being a complete team that can beat anyone.
Putting aside winning/losing I am curious how they may look at offering a large contract basing it entirely on fiancs.
Think Parra playing in the Miller BandBox vs. Cespedes in cavernous Comerica could have something to do with that?
Cano 10 years at 31 years old
Miggy 8 years at 32 (+ a vested option)
Pujols 10 years at 32
Votto 10 years at 30
etc etc. I mean even Wright 8 for 138 at 30 years old
Quote:
Cespedes has a lower OPS than Parra. Worse player. Mets fucked up their asset management.

I assume this was radar?
Meanwhile, you told us there would be "no way" Wilpon would let Wright play for Mets again. That the Mets would get a "board of directors" of doctors to prevent him from stepping on the field again. Well guess what? He's doing baseball related activities, and if the insurance payments haven't stopped yet (based on his level of activities), they will real soon.
Good call!

It has to be injuries with Lagares because the drop off from last season is astonishing.
Rubin had a real nice July. I'm curious to see if he can put together two nice months in a row.
Not that it matters anyway, I can't see the Wilpons opening the purse strings to that extent.

hate to dump on an injured player but Lagares sucks ball right now. He and Tejada are black holes.

Ruben Tejada "real nice July" still gave him a .646 OPS since July 1st (last 28 games). Last 8 games he's been especially bad 160/192/200. All that's changed is his BABIP was inflated and now it's coming back down to earth.
Not that it matters anyway, I can't see the Wilpons opening the purse strings to that extent.

Link - ( New Window )
2. Ynoa (horrid season)
3. Akeel Morris
4. Dario Alvarez
5. Robert Gsellman
6. Thomas Szapucki
7. Matt Bowman (terrible season)
8. Blake Taylor (out until 2017, TJ)
9. Matthew Koch
10. Seth Lugo
Maybe he can train with Colon.
he looked way too skinny last year.
Colon's innings have to be replaced somehow next year.
I don't see why Colon's innings have to be replaced? Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard will have no innings limit. Matz, Niese, and Wheeler for the final two spots? Plenty of innings to go around.
Colon's innings have to be replaced somehow next year.
Keeping all three didn't seem possible to me, but I'm glad they did it.
Now, the question is what happens next year. If they don't shell out some money to keep some offensive pieces, they'll have to deal for bats again.

Thanks Dan, that explains it.
Parnell more likely than not is a goner
Murphy more likely than not is a goner
Clippard more likely than not is a goner
Tejada more likely than not is a goner
Uribe and Johnson likely get multi-year/or more expensive than the Mets will pay bench player deals
Cespedes we shall see what happens
Quote:
is absolutely NO CHANCE Dillon Gee is a Met next year.

I never said this but I wouldn't expect much less from this trio of dimwits. I said the Mets paid more for a Cespedes rental despite Para having a similar season.
And you basically said it was a bad move because of poor asset management. We'll see how long you cling onto that one.

Kelly Johnson's versatility seems to be understated. I would try to re-sign between him and Uribe. He could be a poor man's Zobrist with worse defense and hitting.
I'm sure he'll ignore it going forward, just like he ignored Bill2 on the Iran thread. LOL...
Wright just took full BP in Miami and raked. Hit a HR over the ribbon board in LCF and a one-hopper off the State Farm sign in right-center.

I know he came up in 04, but he got to have a taste of winning pretty early was the point. It's just a great shame that he wasted his healthy years on garbage ball, and now he may or may not be the same going forward.

Actually, it's 100% true. I'm not in the business of saving NFT threads, next time I will for sure...
I worry about that when all of these guys are here and healthy. They are already walking back David Wright's timeframe saying he will play at least 5 rehab games and then reassess so 8/15 aint happening. Win games, worry later.
I'm not giving up anything of note but if they want Tovar or Ceciliani they can have them for Davis. Just like Gee for Martin would be fine too.

I thought 8/15 was more Wright's goal though. Either way I guess if Davis costs little to nothing it might be smart.
