Slot CB Discussion

OBJ_AllDay : 8/3/2015 9:11 pm
I saw in todays report a lot of questions being asked about the slot corner spot. Is it just me that feels this is Mcbride's spot to lose? He was a big surprise in 2013. I like the way he plays and I just assumed it would be him, DRC and Prince as the opening day corners.
Agreed

I would be surprised if McBride wasn't the slot corner this season unless someone surprises out of the group of Brown, Harris, Hosley, Gordy, Fenner.
McBride will definitely start the season in the slot

He is the experienced veteran, our 3rd corner.

We just have to pray both DRC and Prince play 16 solid games this year cause we got ZIP behind them.
Have DRC and Prince ever made it through a season unscathed

In a passing league how come were are precariously thin at CB.
McBride is the default, but he's far from ideal.

To begin with, he's small. That presents a matchup problem against bigger receivers. I like him a lot better against Dallas (Beasley?) than Philly (Matthews?). It says something that the Giants paid up in 2014 to upgrade the nickel spot with Thurmond at the same time they were re-signing McBride for two years. It didn't work out, but it suggests that McBride is more a versatile backup than a plug-and-play nickel.

We might see something of a nickel-by-committee this year, with McBride as the #3 corner but bigger CBs or even fast safeties like Jackson and Thompson taking snaps according to the opponent, game situation, etc.
I don't know if this is relevant to this discussion,

but my concern is depth. If Prince or DRC miss some time, does that mean McBride fills in - and in that case who covers the slot?
If the front 7 can get pressure on the QB

the back 4 will look like all-pros.
