NFT: Knicks sign Kevin Seraphin

Strahan91 : 8/4/2015 11:14 am
1 year, $2.8 million according to Sheridan Hoops
...
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/4/2015 11:17 am : link
There we go
giantsfan44ab : 8/4/2015 11:22 am : link
This roster is leaps and bounds ahead of last year's, front to back.
I like
NJGiantFan84 : 8/4/2015 11:23 am : link
it. Two open roster spots now?

Calderon, Melo, ROLO, Zinger, Galloway, Grant, Amundson,Early, Seraphin, Afflalo, Williams, O'Quinn, Thomas.

So Camp will determine the other two? or is another signing on the horizon?
Phil had a great offseason imo
robbieballs2003 : 8/4/2015 11:28 am : link
He's gonna get killed because we didn't land one of the top FA but I feel most are/were over priced. We should be in great shape for next off-season to land a top player while Porzingis continues to develop.
Awesome!
Italianju : 8/4/2015 11:30 am : link
This is a great signing. I really like Seraphin, ive watched him for awhile living in the bal/was area. So its:

Calderon/Grant/
AA/Galloway/Vujacic
Melo/Early/Thomas
Williams/KP/Amundson
Lopez/Oquinn/Seraphin

So that would be one spot left unless im forgetting someone. I really think that Seraphin can earn a starting spot over Williams. He is more of a Center but can def play PF.
Can't wait for basketball season.
bceagle05 : 8/4/2015 11:31 am : link
If Melo is healthy and buys in, this could be a fun team to watch.
I wonder
Steve in Greenwich : 8/4/2015 11:33 am : link
if this signing means more Derrick Williams and Porzingis as the backup 3 as well as some time at 4. With Robin Lopez, Oquinn Seraphin Williams & Porzingis figuring to all get playing time at the 4-5 and Cleanthony figuring to be the primary 3 backup the talent levels should probably dictate cleanthony's minutes being bumped in favor of getting Williams and Porzingis minutes behind Carmelo.
Do we have enough for a max next year or would we have to

Cap jumps up $20M next year so I'm pretty sure we do, especially if Afflalo and Williams opt out (which is very likely).

depends on the player (different guys have different max salaries). If it's a veteran, yes we'd have to trim a little bit of money. Worst case, they can use the stretch provision on Calderon. If he's healthy though, I think he's going to have a pretty good season and he should have value to a contender.

I think they want to go more small ball with Dudley and even Porter at the 4. They have humphries, nene, Blair, gooden, nene and Gortat at the big spots already.
I think he wanted a better shot at more minutes...
Italianju : 8/4/2015 11:41 am : link
and WAS had a pretty full roster and added a few guys that were expected to get minutes over him.
As a wizards fan
Gmen703 : 8/4/2015 11:41 am : link
I'm kinda torn to see him go. I really liked his low post game. His offense is surprisingly versatile near the hoop. On the flip side, I question is overall ball IQ. Lots of quick and cheap fouls, prone to TOs, and his defense can be lacking at times. I wish him the best in NY.
how many training camp invitees does that make?
Del Shofner : 8/4/2015 11:51 am : link
We can have up to 20 for camp. I think the list above is a pretty solid 14 and the rest will fight it out for the remaining spot, with the numbers suggesting it will be a PG.
Now that they have a few young bigs
Phil in LA : 8/4/2015 11:55 am : link
I wish they still had an assistant like Paul Silas. Silas transformed Ewing's rebounding and D when he was young.
I didn't
NJGiantFan84 : 8/4/2015 11:58 am : link
include Vujacic because I feel like he still has to earn his spot on the team. Non-guaranteed contract, away for a few years, it wouldn't surprise me if they keep Wear or someone else over him. Though, I'm hoping he plays well.

If Williams &/Or Aflalo do not opt out, then we do not have enough for the Max. I'd be surprised if Williams opts out. I don't see him getting that much money from another team unless his year far exceeds my expectations.

I think I read with them in, we have 19 million. A lot, but not enough to offer a Max. Don't quote me on that number.

Marquis Teague!
They'll be able to find room for a max
Phil in LA : 8/4/2015 11:59 am : link
if anyone who's worth one wants to play here next summer.
IF Carmelo is healthy
Chris684 : 8/4/2015 12:01 pm : link
that roster looks like a pretty good bet for a playoff roster in the East.

I think anywhere between the 5-8 seed is a possibility depending on health, development of Grant and Zing, etc.

That would be a nice first step in the process, and really, without a 1st rounder next year, a must.
Welcome Kevin
Deej : 8/4/2015 12:03 pm : link
As I've said before, all I know about him is that he has a deadly hookshot that he doesnt use enough. And we ABSOLUTELY needed another body at center. It's still very dicey for 48 minutes of RoLo gets hurt.

His traditional stats are much better than his advanced stats though. Nothing he's done indicates that he's a guy like KOQ who just needs an opportunity to run.

They would have to make some moves, first. Or players would have to opt out. But you're right, teams usually figure this kind of thing out if they think they can land a guy.

Me too. He does nothing particularly well except run the Triangle. He appears to be smart, but that doesn't help with talent.

I wouldn't keep him if it were me, but it wouldn't surprise me if he and someone else is on the roster over Vujicic.
From what Im reading/seeing
Deej : 8/4/2015 12:20 pm : link
I have concerns that his head isnt totally in the game. He needs work on his body, and after 5 years as a pro athlete that's concerning. And he appears way too devoted to social media. It was newsworthy that he deleted his Instagram account.

Maybe the UFA experience will wake him up. This is a big paycut for him, and we're not the team that brought him into this world (some guys dont get serious until they have to internalize that this is really a profession).

I could be off base.
isn't Vujacic's contract...

But the risk is minimal. A one year deal worth 2.8 million. Are we getting anybody better with that money? Likely not. Plus, he is there for depth. I think it's a good move even if we confirm all those issues are true.
answered my own question...
Mike in St. Louis : 8/4/2015 12:34 pm : link
doubt he'll be cut...

"But apparently, New York went all-in on Vujacic sight unseen, and fully guaranteed his contract for next season."
Link - ( New Window )
If Vujacic can basically do what Shved was supposed to do...
manh george : 8/4/2015 12:54 pm : link
this would be a really good "trade." He certainly has the shooting skills, and maybe the defense. They badly needed another backup shooter with Shved gone. Letting Shved go opened up the cap slot for Seraphin, so this could work out really well if Vujacic has enough left.

Really happy to see them add another true center. The depth beyond the first 8 is really solid now. Thomas and Amundsen can keep each other company at the back end of the bench. With all of this depth, it should be easier to keep Melo fresh.
And Thanasis
Anakim : 8/4/2015 1:12 pm : link
Don't forget Thanasis

Absolutely, super low risk. The risk is (1) he isnt a capable injury replacement -- i.e. he cant be counted on to fill the minutes should RoLo get hurt, and (2) immaturity can wear off on other players. Interestingly our two rookies are very mature -- Zinga was a pro in Europe and Grant was a senior. Early worries me (even at 24), and Williams befuddles me. He seems like a great guy, but given his attitude, athletic skills, and college performance, his lack of success is somewhat hard to understand.
Yeah.

ColHowPepper : 8/4/2015 1:36 pm : link
who attracted a lot of positive comments here (I saw him play one game, looked very athletic and savvy) sign elsewhere? Lots of wondering here why Knicks didn't offer him a contract in the days following end of SL. His agent said there was interest by "a number of teams".
Sorry, I don't remember his name, believe he comes out of W Africa, and plays either SF or SG.

So the article basically says
arniefez : 8/4/2015 1:45 pm : link
if Anthony is his usual ball stopping all I care about is my numbers so I'm an All Star, the Knicks are going to suck. But if Anthony buys in and moves the ball and worries about winning instead of his own numbers and things break right the Knicks can go from 17 to 40 wins. Gee I wonder how that's going to play out.
Hey look two trolls post in a row...
nygiants16 : 8/4/2015 1:49 pm : link
anyway good signing with Seraphin, i think this clears the way for POrzingis to start...

Calderon
Afflalo
Melo
Porzingis
Lopez

Let him play in a good veteran starting lineup and not have to worry about carrying the bench...

Bench:

Grant
Galloway
Wiliams
Oquinn
Seraphin

Is a good bench in my opinion that is tough and defensive minded...

Grant can go out and try to be the scoring punch off the bench with Galloway...
Ndour signed with Dallas for more than the rookie FA minimum.
manh george : 8/4/2015 1:58 pm : link
The Knicks were too slow to respond. Ndour is talented, but slotted as a smallish pf--6'9" and thin. Couldn't play the 3. The question was partly where he would find PT with the Knicks, who are pretty full up at the 4, particularly with Melo likely to play some there. Zinger, O'Quinn, Williams, Melo didn't leave much room.
Depending upon how Calderon looks...
manh george : 8/4/2015 2:05 pm : link
I really wouldn't be surprised with Grant getting some pt with the first team, and Vujacic with the second, assuming he has anything left. They need a three pint shooter with the second squad, and hopefully Vujacic can be that.

I think Calderon starts because it is going to be a very veteran laden starting lineup and Porzingis...with Porzingis he and Calderon can run that pick and pop to set him up...Calderon ran that very well with Bargnani in Toronto and really helped Bargs get open looks..

I think Grant with the second unit allows him to get out and just go score, he can push the pace with Galloway and Williams or run the half court pick and roll or pop with Oquinn and Seraphin...Grant with the ball in his hands is better than playing off the ball with Melo...

The big question is
PhilSimms15 : 8/4/2015 2:11 pm : link
if the Knicks make the playoffs -- 7th or 8th seed -- and get quickly eliminated in the first round -- does Melo view this as progress? Or does he feel his biological clock ticking and decide he wants to play for a team closer to a title?

I think he asks for a trade next offseason and almost every team will have the cap space to absorb his contract.

If Knicks make the playoffs and Melo plays well in the system, Knicks will have a good shot at attracting more players with more cap space that they have...

If Knicks make the playoffs Melo is not leaving...

If they miss the playoffs and the team plays horrible then i could see Melo asking for a trade other than that i think he stays and sticks with the plan...
Melo isnt leaving if we make the playoffs
Deej : 8/4/2015 2:37 pm : link
Moreover, ignoring the cap, go look at which teams Melo would consider waiving his no-trade clause to go to, and ask yourself (1) who are the young pieces they have to trade that would entice the Knicks, and (2) would they want to trade those young pieces to NY for Melo.

It's a lot harder than you think. His wife doesnt want to go to some markets. We arent taking 2 bigs off Philly for Melo. Who says no to a Melo-D'Angelo Russell+ deal? Do the Bulls move Mirotic and is he a decent fit with Porz (doesnt matter; you take him anyway)?

A lot of teams are gutted out of young talent. And then there are a lot of warehouses for recent lottery picks, of differing quality/success (MIN, PHI, UTA...). It's a function of bad recent drafts and imbalance between the conferences -- the West is an arms race while the East is a race to the bottom.
In conclusion
Deej : 8/4/2015 2:40 pm : link
Knicks arent trading Melo without getting one young starter with star upside back, plus another piece or two. And Melo isnt waiving his NTC to go to a team that has those pieces and might consider it. Not sure who fits the sweet spot, but there are at most just a few of those teams and they'd have to want to do it (no sure thing).
I am really hopeful that by the second year...
manh george : 8/4/2015 2:41 pm : link
Zinger will be close to star status, especially on offense, even if his defense lags a bit longer. So if the Knicks can come up with a bona fide max cap player next summer, that would mean three very high quality players including Melo. Melo doesn't leave that.
mg
Deej : 8/4/2015 2:56 pm : link
UFAs next summer dont look so hot. Durant and Horford, sure. 3rd best is Conley IMO, followed by Batum.

My gut tells me that Horford resigns long term, and Durant resigns in OKC on a 2 or 3 year deal (either way, the final season will be a player option, so he's a FA again in 1-2 years).
Yes, it's unlikely that they will find a bona fide max player to come
BeerFridge : 8/4/2015 3:11 pm : link
but if they win, they should be able to bring in someone good and get even better.
Yeah, Deej, there isn't so much.
manh george : 8/4/2015 3:19 pm : link
The biggest need by far will be SG. The best other than Durant would appear to be Eric Gordon and OJ Mayo, not a bumper crop. Who else?
Conley is really interesting
Deej : 8/4/2015 3:23 pm : link
he's developed into a very good player. Only problem is that he'll be 29 before the first year starts, and PGs tend to age badly.
