in the playoffs, if we make the playoffs. They seem rather useless as relievers. Can you change rosters after one series? If Blevins/Matz are back after Sept. 1, I guess they can fill their spots since they are currently on the DL.
Maybe bold is an overstatement but I sorta see him more along 5-6-7. He's had the most plate appearances batting 5th. TC has stated about just switching one position in the lineup and now he just changes it up everyday outside of 2-3 guys.
I stopped following years ago (was a big-time Mets fan in the Carter/Straw/Doc years, but stopped caring about baseball in the mid 90's). Just wanted to say congrats on all of the insane fun this year, and my heart is with you guys and the Mets!
Collins is probably going to tell Montero that he wants to use him down the stretch here but that he's got to get right and step it up and prove he can handle it. No issue with that.
The New York Mets have surged to the top of the NL East, chasing down the Nationals to claim a one game lead in the division. However, their recent success on the diamond has failed to carry over to achievement in the world of spelling and punctuation.
I like that he's saying that, though. It could put pressure on the FO to do what it takes to lock him up. If the fans really love him and know he wants to be here, they will be furious if a serious effort isn't made to make it happen.
Montero too and with the next two months coming up he would almost be the perfect candidate to allow Syndergaard and others to skip starts here and there. WTF? The dude misses almost the whole year with no injury? Strange.
Hoping that Terry isnt being a dick to him; he can be a real dick, like he has been to Flores. If Im Montero I dont let the MLB level manager goad me into coming back a minute too soon. His arm is his career and he's better off going elsewhere with a fair shot to start -- though I'd LOVE to see him as our #5 starter come April.
Maybe the message is that "Whenever you're ready, Alex Torres' spot is yours"
seemed like he only cared about $$$ and was a selfish player and he was very underwhelming in Boston and as a side note I thought the Sox got a very poor return on Jon Lester (Cespedes) - and later a poor return on Cespedes for Porcello.
if he keeps hitting like this I'll do a 180 even as a rental.
think to keep him off the market at minimum you are looking at something in the 7 for 150 range. Remember, he may "screw" himself but the offer has to keep him OFF the market. Wright 138, Choo 130, Ellsbury 153. I think 7 140-150.
Cespedes was my number one target this deadline! Im going to enjoy the next couple months and not stress about contracts and whether or not we can retain him yet. It can go in so many different directions and there are so many factors involved. No sense worrying about it now IMO.
might actually lower what he might get. They are all turning out to be horrible deals for their respective clubs except for maybe the Yankees who can whether anything regardless. I just don't think you look to those deals if you're Jay Z as a barometer. If anything, it would work against him.
Realistically that is the minimum to buy out his free agency. It should come nas no surprise he would want to stay in NY. The market increases his earning potential. the pitching staff makes him relevant for titles. No brainer if the Wilpons ran the team like it ougth to be.
Heading into June... Upton was getting 200 Million and Cespedes was getting 100. lol. Then Upton goes 0 for 2 months and Cespedes explodes. Amazing how quick perceptions change. Lets see how he does here and how he finishes. Lot of season left and Cespedes is streaky too by all accounts. .
RE: I'd be stunned if Fred went to 7/$140M for cespedes

I'm not sure even that would do it. This is his one shot at free agency, and he should be able to clean up. I think you have to blow his doors off with ridiculous money to get him to give it up.
If Cespedes can stick in CF it makes his value you go up a ton. He also might be more amenable to a lesser deal length wise. Im thinking 6 years max for Cespedes while Upton might get 7 or 8.
If Granderson is getting 15 million a year I think Cespedes is worth 22/23. Id go 6/135. That would be a very respectable offer. If he truly loves NY and everything that comes with it I think he takes it. If he wants much more than that I won't have an issue with him walking . We'll have other options.

I think that's close but it'll take 6/$143M or or maybe 7/$158M to get him to sign.
a 7 year deal in the post steroid era. I just can't. Granderson is a very in shape, healthy 34 year old and everyone thinks he's ancient and can't wait to dump him.
6 is absolutely as high as I would go for Cespedes.
Adam Rubin @AdamRubinESPN
Yoenis Cespedes said he doesn't know what front office thinking but he'd like to be Met for "long, long time."
He's now seen our pitching in living color. He would be a fool, not to see the potential here, for championships and marketing deals. He knows he's a major component to the the puzzle, in taking this team from being a cast of pretenders to contenders, in a very short period of time.
...never mind buy it outright. The difference between ponying up $10M for rentals in a playoff race and a massive $135m+ contract commitment is night and day.
Maybe if we walk away from enough salary this offseason they can reallocate enough money to make a big splash in free agency.
Duda and Harvey are getting significant raises in arbitration even if we let everyone else walk. Subtract Murphy/Parnell/Gee/Uribe/Johnson/Clippard/Tejada and it seems plausible overall. of course other moves will have to be made to shore up some roster spots and the bench. If Cespedes proves to be a legit CF option Lagares becomes expendable.
This season is the focus and priority right now. Sandy will have a lot of flexibility to reshape this club in the offseason.
Heading into June... Upton was getting 200 Million and Cespedes was getting 100. lol. Then Upton goes 0 for 2 months and Cespedes explodes. Amazing how quick perceptions change. Lets see how he does here and how he finishes. Lot of season left and Cespedes is streaky too by all accounts. .
Massive, massive difference. The Mets need to offer enough where he doesn't even test the market. He doesn't get to find out if there is a "ridiculous" offer like Cano with Seattle. There is almost no chance you get any of the "the market is tepid" bounce back where u get a sweet deal... you are licking his balls so he doesn't get to meet other girls.
Should spend a couple hours walking around Manhattan with a Keith Hernandez to get a taste of how sweet it is to be a key leader helping bring a championship to the Mets even thirty years later.
There is almost no chance you get any of the "the market is tepid" bounce back where u get a sweet deal... you are licking his balls so he doesn't get to meet other girls.
...Few markets offer the earning power and ancillary benefits NY provides. If contending for titles is a priority for him our pitching staff is a rare commodity.
So maybe...just maybe there is some flexibility in not requiring the Mets to go well above perceived market value.

That was true in the old days. You can be a star at a star's pay grade anywhere now. That's been well demonstrated in sports over recent years. And you can do it in places that don't take nearly 9% of it from you in taxes.

Yeah for me though thats not how I would approach it. I don't want to offer him such a big deal that he doesn't think twice about F/A. That's not Sandy's style or very likely IMO. To me its about offering him a fair deal and all about whether or not he truly loves NY. If he does, it gives us a shot. If he wants us to wright him a blank check to keep in from free agency I don't think thats going to work.
to make a better effort than that! And by the way, should have been swinging away there ...just so tired of seeing position players failing miserably with bunt attempts.
Awful lefty splits this year in the minors. Campbell was the right move. We actually are a little vulnerable against lefties right now until Cuddyer and Wright get back.
that the matchups just won't matter. These mets are just clicking. And it's against two teams that have been a thorn in their side for years. It's nice to see them turn the tables here.
seems like Dombrowski wants to break the GM pay scale, the Tigers owner didnt want to do that so he let him go a few months early as a favor.
Why wouldnt a stud GM be worth $8 million to a team with lots of money to spend? Paying great talent in the front office would probably offer a huge ROI.
Niese with yet another quality start. Collins did his best to be a rally killer having Flores bunt in the 8th inning. The bats bailed him out with a string of 2 out RBI's. It was still the wrong call.
Back to the aces so get the brooms warmed up. Miami is just awful without Stanton. Pretty awful even with him.
GM the one that gave Verlander and Cabrera those ridiculous extensions? Cabrera still had multiple years on his deal and they gave him a Pujols type extension until he was 40.
I'm giddy about getting DW back. Gotta try really hard to temper my expectations. I realize he's been out a long time and isn't going to be able to handle a full workload, but.. even just as a part-timer, he'll be a big boost.
Why is that bold?

Yep. Wonder if 6/130 deal would be enough, or would he still want to test the market? He'll be 30 in October...

Cespedes is horrid against lefties actually. Im actually surprised he's even playing tonight.
I didn't see it above. Different thread? Anyway - fair point. Pujols also got 10 year deal at 31(?). Guess a 6 year deal is a pipe dream.
To Z's point - it is early, but he just brings so much juice and excitement...
I'm not sure even that would do it. This is his one shot at free agency, and he should be able to clean up. I think you have to blow his doors off with ridiculous money to get him to give it up.
I think Upton is better than Cespedes and nearly every stat supports that.
This is Justin Upton, right?
Plus Cespedes is older
What am I missing?

Noah Syndergaard's current 5:1 K:BB ratio is 7th all time among rookies with at least 80IP.
What is happening with that?

Love me some Trunk.
He is a radio guy. They're like vampires.
man on 2nd, pitch around him and pitch to Niese.
glad they didn't.
For a bad hitter, he works deep into counts. Had a ten pitch at bat a few games back.

Didn't make any sense.
Maybe Niese's hit earlier influenced them?

They may have been arrogantly looking ahead to the 7th w the possibility of Niese leading off.

You have been critical of him not bunting like in the St. Louis game. Do you only show up when a move backfires?
like my HS wrestling coach told me when I won due to forfeit... "they don't ask how!"
For who? We have all lefties on the bench right now. And don't you want Lagares in CF with the lead? Lagares is decent against left-handers anyway.
lol.. it's that type of night.
yeah he deserves it
Let's close it out, first!
This has been some week
If Collins was going to do that likely he would have pitched them in the 8th and let Clippard pitch the 9th

When he joins the party, hell be batting second, manager Terry Collins said.
He is more aware of lessening the strain on his back, so he has made some changes with his swing and his throwing.
Its a little bit of a different setup for him now, Long said, but it alleviates some of the pressure on his back.
