Why is that bold?
so, this is super premature, but what do the mets do with colon/niese

in the playoffs, if we make the playoffs. They seem rather useless as relievers. Can you change rosters after one series? If Blevins/Matz are back after Sept. 1, I guess they can fill their spots since they are currently on the DL.

Maybe bold is an overstatement but I sorta see him more along 5-6-7. He's had the most plate appearances batting 5th. TC has stated about just switching one position in the lineup and now he just changes it up everyday outside of 2-3 guys.

what's the message?

Marc Carig @MarcCarig
RT @jareddiamond: Terry Collins says he's going to Port St. Lucie with "a message" for Rafael Montero.
Hey Mets fans
Moondawg : 8/4/2015 4:20 pm : link
I stopped following years ago (was a big-time Mets fan in the Carter/Straw/Doc years, but stopped caring about baseball in the mid 90's). Just wanted to say congrats on all of the insane fun this year, and my heart is with you guys and the Mets!
That

I

have a feeling the Mets are unhappy with Montero.

Either that or the message is "let's get going baby! You can help this team!"

Motivational talk to Montero? "You can call it that. I just want to see for myself." -Terry Collins
montero never struck me as someone who
CMicks3110 : 8/4/2015 4:24 pm : link
was a loafer and wouldn't put the work in. Odd season for him.
So
DanMetroMan : 8/4/2015 4:25 pm : link
it sounds like a little bit of both. Unhappy with him and trying to get him going.

arcarsenal : 8/4/2015 4:39 pm : link
Collins is probably going to tell Montero that he wants to use him down the stretch here but that he's got to get right and step it up and prove he can handle it. No issue with that.
I
DanMetroMan : 8/4/2015 4:42 pm : link
have a feeling they are frustrated he's twice shut himself down with 0 injury found. Like "show you want this".

I like that he's saying that, though. It could put pressure on the FO to do what it takes to lock him up. If the fans really love him and know he wants to be here, they will be furious if a serious effort isn't made to make it happen.
I think they are annoyed at

Montero too and with the next two months coming up he would almost be the perfect candidate to allow Syndergaard and others to skip starts here and there. WTF? The dude misses almost the whole year with no injury? Strange.
I would sign Cespedes today.

have no problem with Collins doing this at all BUT you run the risk of looking REALLY bad if somehow there is a legit injury found down the road.
That Montero note is bizarre
Deej : 8/4/2015 5:02 pm : link
Hoping that Terry isnt being a dick to him; he can be a real dick, like he has been to Flores. If Im Montero I dont let the MLB level manager goad me into coming back a minute too soon. His arm is his career and he's better off going elsewhere with a fair shot to start -- though I'd LOVE to see him as our #5 starter come April.

Maybe the message is that "Whenever you're ready, Alex Torres' spot is yours"

Yep. Wonder if 6/130 deal would be enough, or would he still want to test the market? He'll be 30 in October...
Speedy
DanMetroMan : 8/4/2015 5:10 pm : link
as noted above Choo got 7 for 130 at 32, Ellsbury got 153 at 30. Wright got 8 for 138 at 30
I really didn't want to/think I was going to like
pjcas18 : 8/4/2015 5:12 pm : link
Cespedes.

seemed like he only cared about $$$ and was a selfish player and he was very underwhelming in Boston and as a side note I thought the Sox got a very poor return on Jon Lester (Cespedes) - and later a poor return on Cespedes for Porcello.

if he keeps hitting like this I'll do a 180 even as a rental.
6 years
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:15 pm : link
130/140 sounds about right to me. We've seen him for 4 days though. Think we might all be getting a little ahead of ourselves.

Cespedes is horrid against lefties actually. Im actually surprised he's even playing tonight.

I didn't see it above. Different thread? Anyway - fair point. Pujols also got 10 year deal at 31(?). Guess a 6 year deal is a pipe dream.

To Z's point - it is early, but he just brings so much juice and excitement...
I
DanMetroMan : 8/4/2015 5:27 pm : link
think to keep him off the market at minimum you are looking at something in the 7 for 150 range. Remember, he may "screw" himself but the offer has to keep him OFF the market. Wright 138, Choo 130, Ellsbury 153. I think 7 140-150.
Hey Im excited!
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:28 pm : link
Cespedes was my number one target this deadline! Im going to enjoy the next couple months and not stress about contracts and whether or not we can retain him yet. It can go in so many different directions and there are so many factors involved. No sense worrying about it now IMO.
Choo, Wright, and Ellsbury
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:31 pm : link
might actually lower what he might get. They are all turning out to be horrible deals for their respective clubs except for maybe the Yankees who can whether anything regardless. I just don't think you look to those deals if you're Jay Z as a barometer. If anything, it would work against him.
Lets not overrate Cespedes too much
Deej : 8/4/2015 5:32 pm : link
This may be a career year. He's never been over 3.3 fWAR before. Im not so convinced that he's getting a 180/8 type blowout from anyone.
He's going to get paid though
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:32 pm : link
Im not trying to say he's not. He absolutely will. Lots of big free agent OF available this offseason. Every market is different.
On the flipside
Deej : 8/4/2015 5:33 pm : link
He's got to get more $$ and term than Grandy, right?
Cespedes struggles against lefties is strange
Torrag : 8/4/2015 5:36 pm : link
Makes no sense seeing as he's a righty bat. Is it an anomaly that he can improve on with good coaching...no?
Ellsbury
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:36 pm : link
wRC+ of 104. 1.1 WAR. Terrible defense. Often injured. Year two of contract. Awful deal.
I'd be stunned if Fred went to 7/$140M for cespedes
Torrag : 8/4/2015 5:40 pm : link
Realistically that is the minimum to buy out his free agency. It should come nas no surprise he would want to stay in NY. The market increases his earning potential. the pitching staff makes him relevant for titles. No brainer if the Wilpons ran the team like it ougth to be.
Choo
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:40 pm : link
wRC+ 103. 0.5 WAR. Dreadful defense. Franchise crippling signing.
He's gonna get paid
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/4/2015 5:46 pm : link
And aid be really wary of thinking of Upton as a consolation prize.I don't think Upton is in his class.
Funny how that works.
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:48 pm : link
Heading into June... Upton was getting 200 Million and Cespedes was getting 100. lol. Then Upton goes 0 for 2 months and Cespedes explodes. Amazing how quick perceptions change. Lets see how he does here and how he finishes. Lot of season left and Cespedes is streaky too by all accounts. .

I'm not sure even that would do it. This is his one shot at free agency, and he should be able to clean up. I think you have to blow his doors off with ridiculous money to get him to give it up.
Where does this Cespedes
pjcas18 : 8/4/2015 5:50 pm : link
love come from?

I think Upton is better than Cespedes and nearly every stat supports that.

This is Justin Upton, right?

Plus Cespedes is older

What am I missing?
Well just off the bat
ZGiants98 : 8/4/2015 5:56 pm : link
If Cespedes can stick in CF it makes his value you go up a ton. He also might be more amenable to a lesser deal length wise. Im thinking 6 years max for Cespedes while Upton might get 7 or 8.

If Granderson is getting 15 million a year I think Cespedes is worth 22/23. Id go 6/135. That would be a very respectable offer. If he truly loves NY and everything that comes with it I think he takes it. If he wants much more than that I won't have an issue with him walking . We'll have other options.
