.@Tigers promote assistant GM Al Avila to Executive VP of Baseball Operations and GM. Dave Dombrowski released from his contract.
I don't give the GM much credit for the florida success. When the team loads up like florida does and then blows it all up, its not really creativity, its more luck. They blew their prospect and financial load on one season and then just let everyone go their merry way. Marlins did it again in 03'. I give Beane much more credit for what he's done in oakland over a longer period of time.
As for detroit. He was in a division with the royals, chisox, indians, and twins who have all been terrible for a long time until the royals recently. He's also was gifted a once in a generation bat, and the best pitcher in baseball. He did not assemble the complimentary parts to make that team a success. Plus he's had a lot of payroll to work with in detroit.
29 teams lose every year. Beane put together a fanstic roster last year, mostly through trades. As were the best team in baseball most of the season. He went for it, and failed. But he is a damn good gm.
Beane's teams have won one playoff series in 16 years.
I'm of the thought process that if you don't win, you lost.
Maybe, but look at the resources he has to work with. The A's have been perennially around the bottom 5 in payroll despite numerous 90+ win seasons and division championships. Hard to win in the playoffs when you don't have the money to buy players to fill holes for a playoff run.
The Tigers by contrast have been a top 5 payroll team.
in Oakland, he has zero expectations. he's not expected to win, he doesn't have to win and he doesn't win (when it counts).
He pulled a Belichick and resigned as GM of the Red Sox after less than a day because he knew he'd be scrutinized and 16 years and one playoff win he'd get crucified in the media and be considered a loser.
being a regular season "winner" is no great achievement IMO.
do you take anything away from peyton manning because he hasn't been a super bowl winner. Look, I love Eli, but his super bowl wins have had some luck to it. I think the playoffs in most sports are a crapshoot. Beane hasn't gotten lucky. Its not his fault the players haven't performed in the spotlight. The playoffs are really out of the GMs control. Consistently putting a winning product on the field is, and he has done so fantastically. Dombrowski - .468 winning %

Peyton won a Super Bowl, but before he did, absolutely there was a huge ground swell of "can't win the big game" knock on Peyton.

Peyton hasn't been a Super Bowl winner?
I'd love for Cashman to bring him in with some important title.
Tigers before this year 95, 88, 93, 90 wins
88 or more wins in Detroit 6 times. That's damn good
His teams won 1 WS, appeared in 3

Sorry, didn't say he was bad. Just overrated.
You can pick at his performance because they never won it all, but I think it's obvious that he did a good job in Detroit.

Interesting. I heard even before his firing that he was in line to replace Paul Beeston as Toronto's team president.

Are you sure you watch sports? Your posts in this thread have seriously left me wondering...
Part of that .468 winning pct. is due to being ordered to dismantle the Marlins for $$ reasons by Huezenga.
