Chip Kelly: Handling of Riley Cooper "could be" connected

Big Blue '56 : 8/4/2015 4:50 pm
to Current issue.

From PFT:

Quote:

As he continues to defend himself against claims of racism, Eagles coach Chip Kelly acknowledged the reason may be because of the way he handled a guy who actually committed some.

According to Phil Sheridan of ESPN.com, Kelly was asked Tuesday if he saw a connection between his treatment of wide receiver Riley Cooper after his videotaped racial slur and remarks by former players including Brandon Boykin and LeSean McCoy.

“There could be,” Kelly said. “I literally don’t spend time trying to connect Y to X to Z. We have other things to do.”

I confess. When McCoy and then others made the "racist' claim, I had completely forgotten about the Riley Cooper thing..Sheesh
Maybe he is, maybe not,
giantgiantfan : 8/4/2015 5:00 pm : link
but if he truly was, why don't current players confront management? Or go to the NFLPA?
So this makes most coaches
Moondawg : 8/4/2015 5:16 pm : link
misogynist too, right, for how they tolerate domestic abuse?
If I were Chip

I'd have made this a non-issue and released Cooper. Those type of comments can cause a rift in the locker room, and I'd rather not have any part of that type of distraction.
O-o-o-o-oh!!!

Instead he gave him a big extension and cut Jackson!
Cutting Jackson was a mistake

there ain't no one that can't not cover him. That's a fact.
If Kelly half an ounce of emotional intelligence
81_Great_Dane : 8/4/2015 5:58 pm : link
he would have found a way to get Cooper out of that locker room. But he kept Cooper and now there's a permanent cloud hanging over Kelly.
If I was an iggles fan(thank God I'm not)...

I'd be more concerned with Kelly's roster development the last two seasons than vague insinuations of racism. His off season 'plan' was mystifying to everyone. This makes the second year in a row their talent level has regressed. They are a borderline .500 ball club at this point.

Eagle fans buy into anything Chip Kelly does. He was just getting rid of the bums Andy Reid left on the roster.
How does anyone defend himself against...
Crispino : 8/4/2015 6:43 pm : link
this type attack? African American athletes insinuating that Kelly is a racist, but saying they're not making the accusation that he's racist. Then they're backed up by guys like Stephen A. Smith giving the accusations credence in the media. i do t have any idea if it's true or not, but his career is shot unless he wins it all, this season. It's the only thing that will make this all go away.
'He was just getting rid of the bums Andy Reid left on the roster.'
Torrag : 8/4/2015 6:46 pm : link
Foles track record is better than Bradfords. Even Mathis is one of the better OG's in the league. Mccoy has been much more reliable than Murray. Yeah he really cleared out those bums he inherited.

Not too bright a statement.

I think you should check on your sarcasm detector...
Racist?
Steve in South Jersey : 8/4/2015 7:06 pm : link
I really doubt it. Kelly seems like a good guy. He does a lot of nice things around Philadelphia community. He replaced McCoy with Murray. Is that racist?

Kelly may have problems relating easily with black culture. I have no reason to believe that but with a couple of ex-Eagles making this charge it may be an explanation. If so this is bad for the Eagles and good for the Giants but doesn't make Kelly a racist IMO.

“Shady" McCoy has a bad reputation off the field. He leaves 20 cent tips, holds female only parties, etc. He may be a problem in the locker room. I totally understand getting him off the team. Jackson too.

He lead the league in rushing 2 years ago . . . but he's a cheap tipper. Yea, can't be having THOSE kind of guys in the locker room.

Anyway, i don't know if Chip is a racist, but he undoubtedly handled his first couple years in Philly poorly in terms of his relationship with players on the team. When you keep a guy who alienated people in the locker room (Cooper) and then dispatch of someone who is well-liked amongst his teammates (Jackson), it's only natural that resentment is going build up.

Shady McCoy is the the Racist

NO one has the guts to call him one. Perhaps Kelly wants team oriented guys and Jackson and McCoy are ME oriented guys.
Kelly put his foot in his mouth ....
Manny in CA : 8/5/2015 12:43 am : link
First by not disciplining Cooper and now being dismissive by blurting out the "I've got better things to do" crap.

I DON'T, in any way think Kelly is a racist, but myopic fool.

The selfish idiots who got run out of town deserved to be run, but Kelly gives them the ammunition to play the race card.

Ironically, the guy I feel most sorry for (or maybe disgusted) is Mike Vick. He "fought the law, (and PETA), the law won" When he stooped and kissed the Eagles' butt by buddying up to Riley, that was rock-bottom.

They are a dysfunctional family (the Eagles), held together by the fear of losing a pay-check, not by any sense of team loyalty.

In contrast - Remember when Michael Strahan stood up to Tom Coughlin, when the Old Man was being a jerk? What did Tom do ? - he went home and looked at himself in the mirror, and the next year picked up a Super Bowl Trophy, the next year
incomplete version of history
bc4life : 8/5/2015 7:27 am : link
Strahan was being a bit if a jerk too (i.e., coming to meetings late just to test TC's rule). When MS recollects their conflict he always seems to forget his part in it.

And, Strahan was a bit of a jerk himself when he criticized Fassel while he was home burying his Mother.
Was Vikc kissing their butt
bc4life : 8/5/2015 7:31 am : link
was he being a god teammate realizing that people do stupid shit and you need to support teammates who are remorseful and trying to get past it.

Based on reports from Riley's former teammates, it didn't seem to be problem. You carry the baggage you are brought up with and sometimes it slips out, frequently because it is lubricated with alcohol.
A lot of people have amnesia about Strahan
Greg from LI : 8/5/2015 7:32 am : link
He was an obnoxious asshole for most of his career.

very true. he grew up after a few years of TC enlightenment. And after Tiki the dooshbag left and Shockey was injured then traded the whole tenor of the locker room seemed to change.

Manny, WTF are you talking about? Vick didn't 'fight the law', Vick fought the dogs (against each other) and ran an interstate gambling ring. No surprise someone capable of that kind of garbage would have a problem buddying up to Cooper to save his own hide.
I don't think feel sorry for...

I'd rephrase that Kelly isn't a good guy, he's weird guy.

There is something just not right about him.

I don't think he's a racist by any means, but there is something just not right about him.

Any HC that walks by his players in the hall way and doesn't acknowledge them........that's weird.
he will pay
Glover : 8/5/2015 1:27 pm : link
big time for trading Foles away for Bradford, but he may have liked Sanchez better than Foles anyway, like so many Eagles fans, and he got his precious 2nd round pick in the deal. He likes Rowe a lot and that made Boykin expendable, I guess. Maybe he won't suffer any of these radical changes and maybe he is a great GM to boot. IF he wins 10 games again this season he will carry on. If not...
