NFT: Any TV Recommendations

kash94 : 8/4/2015 4:50 pm
Hey all,

Looking to buy a TV for my parents in Long Island as their current one stopped working. Any good recommendations?

Things we're looking for:
-Someone to deliver install the TV for them (this is by far the most important aspect)
-48-52 inches
-HD, flatscreen, etc
-Price not as much of an issue as long as it's now outrageous.

Thanks so much!

a list of providers would be useful (rather than specific models)
You can't go very wrong

with any of: Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic. Then there's Sharp (The Quattro system really does give better color), Toshiba and Vizio, which are arguably a step down -- at least by reputation.

You probably don't want to spend a lot on a regular HDTV right now, since Ultra-HD is coming in.

The single feature I most covet right now is high dynamic range. Bigger step forward than 4K UHD. It's a startling improvement. But not much HDR content out there right now and I think it's being reserved for 4K UHD models, which are still expensive.

Dolby Vision is one HDR system. Sony has something similar of its own.

I recommend that you don't put it in your washing machine.
I'm a big fan of Panasonic Viera plasma.

I have a 42" in my LR, and a 65" in my basement. The 65" is sick.

They stopped making them. They only sell LED/LCD now.

That's a lot harder to get nowadays from online vendors. Most people aren't paying for it anymore.

You can try someone local like PC Richard and Son, but I've read their installation guys are hit or miss.
I recently purchased....

.... the Samsung J6200 from Best Buy and have nothing but positive things to say about it. It's a 50-incher that retails for around $650.

Geek Squad delivered the TV and hooked it up to my various audio/video components without incident.

True, but you can still find them. Hell, even Panasonic still sells them on their site. Saw them in Best Buy just a few days ago.

The big one in the living room was having a problem where everything went negative/purple hued. Looked it up and it turns out some circuit was supposed to be cut and wasnt, so I had to take the back off and cut a wire myself. That's pretty poor on their part. No problems since.

My smaller one in the bedroom restarts itself several times a week. Though I think the problem could be the wiring in our apartment. The landlord has had an electrician in several times, but we still have problems with that part of the apartment.
