Rock: Ben McAdoo 'excited' about Giants' offensive line

"The saying is: We're not where we want to be, but thank goodness we're not where we used to be," McAdoo said. "From a physicality standpoint, from a communication standpoint, they're growing."

The right side of the line has been a cause of particular stress to those who observe the team. Marshall Newhouse at tackle and John Jerry at guard did not distinguish themselves in last week's preseason opener against the Bengals. Again, though, McAdoo was positive.

"I have confidence in Marshall," he said of Newhouse, who was on the Packers when McAdoo was an assistant coach in Green Bay. "He's an athletic guy, a smart guy, and I look forward to him growing in the offense."

Maybe I'm crazy.. I think there's a realistic possibility that the line winds up being fine. I think Jerry will be a weak link as long as he's in there, but.. hopefully he's not long for the RG spot.

I think Newhouse will have his warts but I actually don't think he's going to be a disaster at all and I really like the left side. I think Flowers is going to be a stud and I think Pugh is where he should be now and will be an excellent LG.
Well he's certainly not going to say they're awful.

And I'm not saying the line will drive the offense like it did in 2007/2008, I just think it's entirely possible that it's "OK" and nowhere near as terrible and disastrous as a lot of people think it's going to be. We'll see.
The line can be a strength ... can be.
robbieballs2003 : 8/19/2015 4:09 pm : link
We need everybody to get and stay healthy though. Our biggest issues are that we have no continuity with this unit. An OL is alway more about the whole than the sum of it's parts. With our injuries we can never get these guys playing "together". It is all about just getting their reps and getting better as an individual but not as a group. That is the worst part. Our second biggest issue is not the actual starters but the depth. There is a significant drop off in talent from our 5 projected starters to that next OL in the game. Now, sometimes a weakness can be overcome at an OL position if they truly know how to work together. So, that is the advantage of these injuries right now with these backups getting quality reps with the projected starters. So, if an OL were to miss a game or two then I think we will be able to handle that. If we have to go a whole season with one of these guys I don't know how well that will turn out.

Giants have tried various combinations at RT, RG. How about this one?
Ivan15 : 8/19/2015 4:52 pm : link
I haven't heard them try Newhouse at RG and Schwartz or Jerry at RT (especially if Schwartz can't go).

It sounds like Newhouse's weakness (controlling a pass rushing DE head up) may be less a liability at RG, and Jerry's strength (pass blocking) may be better utilized at RT.

I think Jerry played some RT at Miami and, although not great, he wasn't a disaster there that Newhouse may be.
The big hope is ....
Manny in CA : 8/19/2015 4:56 pm : link
That Schwartz is OK. He's played OT before, (recall, he did OK, in brief duty for the Giants last year). I think he would be an upgrade at RT.

The only hole to fill. if that happened would be RG (where Jerry continues to struggle). Out of Newhouse or Reynolds, I think we can find a competent player to man RG.
Just stay healthy.

Schwartz..

Whats the deal with this guy? He seems to tweet or do something with the media every 5 minutes yet he's always hurt. I know it's not why he's always hurt but it leaves a bad impression. That right side looks like a nightmare.

What deal? He's coming back from ankle surgery. It doesn't mean he's got to be in bed in quarrantine or shouldn't function like a normal person. What impression? Should he spend his time yelling at his bones to heal faster?

LOL
The Gmen need Schwartz healthy.
Boy Cord : 8/19/2015 6:23 pm : link
I am excited to see Flowers-Pugh-Richburg. Add Schwartz to the right side and one of our bums and let's get it on. I also wouldn't mind Mathis at LG and moving Pugh to the right side. I don't think Waiting around for Beatty is a plan. If the Gmen spend on Mathis and the line grows, the Gmen can let Beatty walk in 2016 when his cap hit becomes manageable.

Uhhhhhh, yea? Dirt, ice and yelling has been a cure all for years.
What's Mac going to say? I can't sleep at night worrying about the OL?
Torrag : 8/19/2015 6:34 pm : link
Their job is to put the best combination of guys out there to function as a unit and be successful. Someone has to play RT and RG until some guys get healthy. He can spout soundbytes all day. The track records of Jerry and Newhouse on the field as professionals is abysmal. Not average or ok just plain bad. Playing next to each other they have the potential to stall this offense. These are the facts of their careers to date.

We all hope we can get some better players ready by opening day. Be it Schwartz, Mathis or Long. If we aren't able to upgrade at least one staring position before the Dallas opener I'm extremely worried they'll be an anchor on our offensive potential.
Hart is the sleeper

watch him progress. He'll be a 13-year guy maybe not all for the Giants, but in the league for a long time.

A RT has to run block first and pass block second. Most teams, including the Giants, primarily run right, which is also where the TE generally lines up. The RT and TE need to move people if the running game is going to work. This is the reason the Giants wanted Flowers to play RT.
They did not play well as a unit

Love to see them settle on five, stay healthy, then develop some cohesion.
