Good NYDN Article on Safety Landon Collins

GEISMAR, La. — Landon Collins, a one-time homecoming king, drives a white BMW 640i across loose gravel in the parking lot as dawn breaks over Dutchtown High’s Griffin Stadium. Temporary license plates mark the recent luxury purchase; tinted windows keep onlookers guessing who’s inside. Forecasters on the FM dial note that the heat index is fixing to reach triple digits by noon while Collins, a well-kept beard covering his face, pulls into a parking space by the grandstand. He wears black tights, a gold cross with the Lord’s Prayer etched on it and a gray long-sleeve shirt with the words “Sonic Boom” on it. He fiddles with two iPhone6’s in his hands. Sweat beads form on his forehead; he surveys the scene. On-field violence comes to mind.

Ten years ago, Hurricane Katrina ripped through Landon Collins' life, but the experience didn't derail the young Giants safety - ( New Window )
I've been waiting for a more talented Shaun Williams

and Killer Kinnard. Thought I had him in Kenny Phillips. Seems if Collins stays healthy, my wait is over. That was a joy to read, thanks

in the video where he announced he was going to Alabama is priceless
I'll keep on posting off that article

I'm believing with health we have a bona fide difference maker that will make going over the middle a terrible idea for a TE or WR
Good read. That picture of Collins is just a head shot

but the guy looks like a Defensive Lineman.
The sky is the limit for Collins...

...yet he has to play the over the top ball better. No reason he can't but to date he has been susceptible in that area. Rookies learn the hard way in the NFL that biting on play action or getting looked off results in big plays. I expect some growing pains for Landon as he's extremely aggressive. He'll learn fast and be a stud soon enough.
The love that Nick Saban shows this player

is unlike anyone coming out of Alabama as long as he has been Coach.
Good article.

I think he's going to be a good one for us.
He comes with a lot of hype and he talks big
Milton : 8/22/2015 12:43 pm : link
But I'm not as sold on him as some of you. There are things about him that don't add up for me. I worry that he's going to give up more big plays than he makes.

special teams

he made a really nice play on the Punt following the opening 3 and out. Came from back at the punter to cut the returner down. He was a beast on special teams at Alabama and it immediately showed up that 1st play.

The question about collins
KWALL2 : 8/22/2015 1:47 pm : link
Is can be match up with NFL talent and cover. It's a legit question that hasn't been answered yet. Playing in space in the NFL is a lot different than college.

Will his movement be able to matchup in the NFL? That's what I want to see.

He's a big guy. Maybe too big for what you want at S today. This is what I was worried about and haven't seen anything yet to drop that concern.
I don't root for guys to get hurt
Headhunter : 8/22/2015 1:47 pm : link
but knocking out 3 guys in a row even though they were your own teammates does show you do like to hit
In the article the Panthers who had number 25

if he would play WIL and he said he would ask to be traded. He is a Safety
We don't know if he's an

NFL safety yet. He may be better at LB. we'll see.

Panthers know a little about moving guys from S to LB. it worked for Thomas Davis. They thought he should play LB and not S in the NFL? At this point we don't know if they were right or wrong.
That is what he said
Headhunter : 8/22/2015 2:02 pm : link
in Eric's article he posted, if asked to play LB he would ask to be traded
very good read
ColHowPepper : 8/22/2015 2:40 pm : link
well written.

And KWALL2 is asking the operative question, as did Carolina. Collins and the Giants think they know the answer, and it will be interesting to follow as the returns begin to come in. He will make mistakes in reads and judgment of speed; that's to be expected, but after five games and assuming he's healthy, we'll have a good sense.

It's just little things. They say he dropped in the draft because he was looked upon as strictly a box safety, but the Giants seem to have him playing centerfield, which is the part of his game that was most criticized coming out of college. And his whole "chip on his shoulder" routine rubs me the wrong way. And it bothered me that he showed up at the combine overweight.

Here's a blurb written by his mother and published by The Bleacher Report last April...
Quote:
Landon’s been training with Wyatt Harris at the Sonic Boom facility in New Orleans for over a year now. Wyatt’s trained guys like Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Marques Colston, Tracy Porter and Robert Meachem, who’s taken Landon under his wing.

I didn’t know Landon had gotten that big, though. I called Wyatt and told him Landon needed to knock off five to 10 pounds.

His trainer said he was 217 when he left for the combine. Landon said he was drinking too much water and ate before the competition, but I don’t think water weight was the culprit there. Landon is a sweets eater.

Obviously the Giants scouts and coaches think a lot of him. I'm not predicting a bust, I'm just saying I'm not sold on the hype. I'd like to be more excited about a prospect who cost the team their 2nd and 4th round picks in the draft. Right now I'm more excited about Owa--and what I've been reading about him--than I am by what I've read about Collins. Hopefully we'll get a good look at both of them tonight!
I just don't think Nick Saban

blows smoke up people's asses. I believe like all coaches he hypes his players to a degree, but he is over the moon when he talked about Landon Collins. We shall see

I took note of that, too. And nothing is more telling than the fact that the Giants spent both their 2nd and 4th round picks on him. The Giants don't make a move like that unless both their scouting and coaching staffs are pretty sure of the prospect.
Great

article. Thanks. Good stuff.
Look

I am hopeful on all of them that come in and more often disappointed after the reality of the games burst my bubble. But, I feel really good about Collins. Antrel was great but added no intimidation factor. I hope that Collins can cover and make players coming over the middle have their heads on a swivel. We shall see
one thing for certain

he cannot be any worse than the trash we have been fielding the last several years. We can't stop anybody, especially on 3rd down
