bug is deadly. Currie, Johnson, Beason, Gettis, and Jackson. Currie done for the year obviously. Not sure about the others. Got to hope the others aren't more than a few weeks, but even if these guys are ready to go physically week one, they have little playing experience, especially with each other. There are likely to be many miscommunications.
but the injury situation on the DB's is a little overblown and looks worse on paper than it really is. Hopefully Bennett Jackson isn't hurt bad....that will be a total bummer, if he is...BUT , if you really look at it, the top 3 safeties on the depth chart are Landon Collins, Jeromy Miles and Brandon Merriweather. Collins will practice Monday and Miles and Merriweather are healthy. After that you have Cooper Taylor, Berhe and Jackson. Taylor and Jackson could practice early this week. The big wild card is Bennett Jackson.
The FA Safety market is so bare that I'd take a shot at him, even though he...well, he sucks. Or even Jim Leonhard. Or fuck, even Taylor Mays or the Landrys. This team needs bodies at Safety BADLY. We're desperate.
I thought the oline looked solid. The depth seems improved over last year, due to Dallas Reynolds being improved, Jerry who will probably be a back up. Newhouse was a little better, Schwartz got a little better as the game went on...he was rusty. Bobby Hart, although playing against 2's and 3's also looks good.
Nice games for the linebackers, Jeremy Davis, James Jones.
Pass rush was inconsistent, but you could see glimpses...Moore, Odigizuwa. Ellis looks solid on the interior.
Wow. That would really be terrible for him. Hope they're wrong. Cooper Taylor may get on the team just because there is no one else. Same for Merriweather. And Miles.
One of them being how hard the backups competed, which means TC can still get it done. Our offense was again putrid, that's not a good sign against a so so defense at home a week after looking lost against a playoff caliber Bengals team.
Flowers is the real deal, Pugh is coming on but still has to smooth out a few things (He had an infected molar and sat out practice so he gets a pass) and Richburg is steadier and steadier by the week. Pass blocking was great for the most part, Eli and the WRs were not and in year 12 of his career those are plays Eli should hit in his sleep. His inconsistency is still maddening and it will rear its head this year as it does every year. The hope is that the OL and running game can help out when he can't get it done as it did when we had Jacobs/Bradshaw/Ward and that OL that dominated games. This won't be the 2007/2008 line, but it could be much improved with Pugh and Richburg where they belong and the man child Flowers at LT. You still have two question marks up front and that's too many.
Ellis needs to be next to Hankins on snap one next week and this DL needs to set the tone with those two big behemoths and let the DEs then feed off it. Kuhn is a turnstile and Jenkins is not much more than a solid rotational guy, so I'd get Ellis in the lineup now and at least be solid up the gut against the run. Do that and you can build out from there. There is still no pass rush from the DEs and unless JPP turns starfish and grows his fingers back there's not much chance our DEs generate a ton of pressure. We need to get back to basics, stop the run, tackle and keep people in front of you and go from there. All of Spags' ability to deploy the fire zone schemes is great, but you have to have sound run stopping, gap controlling DL first and foremost before you start using gadgets.
The DBs are a big big big problem and unless we pull off some miracle trade, we are in trouble on the backend. We're down a lot of guys from a group that wasn't good or deep to begin with, this does not bode well.
He's only in the game because they are out of guys and then he gets hurt. Awful. Man this is a huge blow and I feel terrible for the player. Awful. Awful.
good at Guard and Center and the level of competition was 2nd & 3rd teamers but he more than held his own. I like Bobby Hart although he got walked back to Nassib on his first snap
That should end that experiment. Pugh also has some things he needs to smooth out, but looked ok (aside from a couple of plays where his man just dominated him).
even final cuts likely won't produce much of a viable safety etc

Schwartz looked bad everywhere. He looks like he's playing to not get injured. He was better at Guard, but that's like saying one fart smelled less than another.

I thought he looked good, but I admittedly didn't key in on him. It seemed like most of the issues came from Newhouse playing next to him and constantly losing battles to his man.
It looked hyperextended for a second as the guy fell on him, but an ACL from that? Where is the Brady Bunch tiki doll, someone has it and is cursing our players. That sucks for Jackson to get cut, make it to the PS, have microfracture now this.

May the Schwartz be with Eli this year regardless of who is blocking.
even Banks mentioned he was banging around pretty well. Some posters are just angry.
You can call me out if I'm wrong, and yes I'm angry at Jerry Reese and Chris Mara for shanking this roster. Schwartz didn't look like a $16 million key addition to the OL. He's been out, I'll give him that but to think he was good...ehhh not quite. He's got some time to get in game shape and I was happy we signed him when we did so I'll hold judgement.
with 8 seconds left in the half when TT blitzed and got nailed by JPP. He worked so hard to come back from his ACL only to tear on a freak play with time running out. Same thing different injuries for Jackson. Life is not fair, life is not unfair, life is just life
You know a more about this game than the vast majority of posters on BBI...but you've been watching with your heart lately and you haven't been your usual self.
I hope things are okay.
Schwartz honestly looked okay for a guy getting his first action in a long time. His pad level was a little high at times but lets give him a couple of more games. Its not like there is another option.

Fair enough, it was his first game action in a while, and yes I've been more annoyed than usual but that's actually a good sign for me. Being chipper and happy is when you should worry my friend :)
I know we've beaten the Will Hill dead horse a ton here, but anybody know if he's a top 3 safety in Bal? If not, we could do a lot worse in a trade for a mid-late rounder. He's got experience with Spags plus obviously his time as a NYG.
hurts at safety and CB. he was going to play some nickel CB.
Not a big Taylor Mays fan, but there is wisdom in bringing him in at this point. The position is just too thin...and he is probably better than Taylor.
Remember, Currie went down as well.
Right now the top three safeties look like Collins, Berhe, and Merriweather.

That's because Schwartz is a guard, not really a tackle, and that is when he isn't injured

Just so happens Giants worked out safeties last week, so add Taylor Mays to that mix + would think they'll be signing at least 1 this week.
only has one hole at RT so you can manage. However any other injuries (including Schwartz) and we're in trouble. Tonight it was Eli being erratic. He got enough time, but a lot of his passes were batted down.
The secondary is much worse off. DRC and Prince is a good corner tandem but no safeties makes them useless. Hopefully the safety pair is Collins and Meriweather (who is pretty good when he isn't trying to headhunt)
I really liked what I saw from Gettis and the reports written on him.
He was alright. It's a good starting point for a guy who has missed a TON of time. So, we'll take it. Now please, just stay healthy. He's due for it, and so is this team.
RE: RE: I really liked what I saw from Gettis and the reports written on him.
If this is really a win-or-else year for the coaching staff (and I'm not sure I really believe that it is), a right tackle, or a quality TE, or almost anything that would fill an immediate need, is more valuable than a quality backup for Eli.
RE: RE: I really liked what I saw from Gettis and the reports written on him.
I really wish they would try him with the first team and have Pugh at OT. I know they want Pugh at LG bht they have to look at the big picture here.
The last thing they want is a really raw left side. Pugh is playing there because they trust he can help Flowers.
Yep, I stated that in the game thread but Gettis isnt exactly a rookie and Flowers has been holding his own. I just think with these other combinations they are trying they might as well get Gettis reps with the first team. He looks pretty stout.
Flowers looked Awesome. Eli and OBJ aren't on the same page... Why is that? We actually had some Linebackers step up, finally. Our D-Line would be great if we had JPP. Flowers looked Awesome.

I truly doubt it. One, if you trade Nassib before you get a deal done with Eli the Condon has more leverage, not that he needs more. Two, if we trade Nassib it will probably be right prior or during the draft. Trading him now for a pick doesn't help us. Trading him now for a player really doesnt help because that player is so far behind in learning the system.
Happy feet? With third and fourth string OL in the game? With blood-in-the-water pass rushers looking to make the team?
That's one of Nassib's skills. His ability to step up, through or around an oncoming rush. Not to mention the fact that he sells the SHIT outta the play action roll.
Kid is only going to get better. But fuck Syracuse. Buncha assholes.
but while the position seems to be thin, it's not for a lack of candidates. We've lost Thompson, Jackson, and Currie to terrible injuries, however we still have players on the roster (besides the recently acquired Meriweather) that can do more than just fight for spots there: Collins, Berhe, and Taylor.
Giants installed significant part of their vertical passing game this past week. It's one of the reasons they took those shots to Beckham.
Guess they forgot what they were doing last year?
Watching the Giants over the years in preseason, sometimes it's hard to come away with where they actually are...
With all the uncertainty on this team, we really won't know what we have until the bye...
What is sad though, after the Draft, we looked at our safeties as Collins, Berhe, and Taylor......a big mistake by Reese......someone with no experience and two exercise bike riders....he will be scrambling to fill that position....
What is laughable is the thought that the Giants would even think of trading for Will Hill...
First, he would easily be the starting quarterback on the other 2 New York state teams in the league. Both aspire to be playoff teams. Second he is using the extended handoff technique that guys like Steve DeBerg used (who, in turn, taught Dan Marino.) It allows for a better play fake by showing the second level of the defense the run-option earlier, thus holding up the depth on their coverage drop. Third, as to the asine happy feet angle, those saved him maybe 8 sacks and he made plays downfield on at least 5 occasions that I can remember.
By happy feet, I don't mean running out of the pocket
Thought OL improved. If Flowers, Pugh and Richburg were not year 1 players at their positions there would be little to talk about. Could be in great shape for a few years on that side of the line.
Right side was more questionable but I think Schwartz has shown the most at RG. Thought he was worse at RT. Jerry looked to have good hands at tackle but his footwork was bad. He cant play the outside speed rush at all. Newhouse looks like an OK swing tackle type which is what they signed him for would feel better with him stepping in for a game or 2 then being our starter. Hart did get pushed back but he stayed engaged the whole time and moves well.
All wr's flashed, minus Beckham but he seemed to hold his wrist a bit after hit by safety on 1st or 2nd play. gonna be a tough cut unless we don't have enough db's to fill out the roster.
McBride, wade, Harris all look solid for back end guys at CB. Safety is a mess at the moment Meriweather looked good coming towards the line but dont feel good with him deep.
Pass rush looked better with a few blitzs worked in. Sure it will be even better with a full package. Thomas looked great blitzing and I feel Kenard can excel in the same looks.
OO looks similar to Osi with his jump off the snap. Almost to early it looked but he is coming before QB takes a step back. Moore also looks fast and would pursue plays away from or past him better then I have seen before. Ellis seemed to push the pocket back well too. He may get the equivalent of an assist on a bunch of sacks.
RE: By happy feet, I don't mean running out of the pocket
Newhouse was mediocre at best and Schwartz, while looking OK for his first action at guard, is not the answer at ORT. There must be absolutely no tread left on Jake Long's tires if he's not getting a look.
There are injuries around the NFL, but the constant top of the league rate for the Giants isn't likely just coincidence or bad luck at this point.
OL as a whole.
Darkwa.
Hunt with a nice KO return. Has speed and some wiggle.
Unga.
OO.
Bromley.
Ellis.
And by reading the game thread, the same shitty ass poster are in midseason form.
The first post I read was that Eli needs to sit in favor of Nassib and I knew that it would be even pointless to watch the game.
Vereen
Josh brown (why not?)

Agreed.
Sure did. And so did Nassib.

His knee didn't even look like it twisted or landed awkwardly?
There seems to be serious concerns about Bennett Jackson's knee. MRI tomorrow #Giants

Indications are that Bennett Jacksons knee injury could be very serious. Tough break for a guy whos really been surging.
They played well.

Bennett Jackson just walked through the locker room, right leg/knee wrapped, limping. Did not look too good.
Bennett Jackson has his right knee in a large brace. Bending it very little - if at all - as he walks.
I hope things are okay.

reminiscent of ex-Cowboys RT Erik Williams

Very happy to hear the OL looked good. This is the only thing to worry about on offense. If the OL is better than average we will score plenty.
Looking forward to watching this game and seeing Thomas. Many commented he looked good so I'll be watching him and my guy Odi.
The last thing they want is a really raw left side. Pugh is playing there because they trust he can help Flowers.

Reese seems prescient at that position.
I was wondering about that. I wonder if that makes it easier for the runner to pick up -- but then he got creamed.
