Some thoughts from the game

Sy'56 : 8/23/2015 9:31 am
Rare occasion that I was able to get to the game....

-First thing...the parking/traffic situation is by far the worst I have ever seen at Metlife. The amount of construction going on there has really made it a nightmare.

-The one player that impressed me the most on both sides of the ball, both teams...was RB Orleans Darkwa. I know NYG is pretty deep at the position right now but Darkwa has a gear and initial explosion that nobody else has. A lot of attention is being given to Manning and his WR group but these guys in the backfield can really play. They are different players as well...this could be a major strength if the OL can hold up.

-For the OL...I liked Flowers assertiveness and aggression compared to last week's tape. He got his hands on faster and his legs were always underneath him, something he wasn't doing in CIN. He has the tools as we know. His question will be a consitency of mechanics and technique...we will likely see a big up and down swing out of him all year. Hopefully the downs don't get Eli killed.

-Newhouse/Jerry isn't as bad a right side as some want to say. They can move guys in the run game. The better pass rush attacks will beat them but NYG can work around that and shift more attention that way when it comes to help. I'm more worried about Richburg than those guys. Manning gets overly jumpy when pressure comes at him up the middle and Richburg doesn't seem to have that anchor yet. If help is being directed to a rookie LT and so-so right side...Richburg needs to get it done by himself a lot. Not sure he can do it.

-Beckham didn't feel like playing. I get not wanting to lay out with safeties bearing down on him over the middle in preseason. I won't overreact here but knowing the history of success at the WR position in the league and what happens to a lot of guys there....I hope his head isn't up in the clouds.

-The NYG injuries at DB have been well documented. No time for them to cry about being "unlucky". Every team has dealt with injuries and NYG's situation is not the worst in the world. Next man up. I like CB Wade, he moves well and anticipates. There will be some more talent available after the cuts come in next month. Losing Jackson/Currie won't hurt this team that much.

-Unga might be the best LB on this team from a physical perspective. He needs to stay on this roster. Not sure where he's at mentally with the playbook but he pursues as well as anyone and most importantly he finishes.

-Meriweather looked rusty as expected. I never liked him because I think he is a liability in deep coverage and he was run by a few times last night. His acceleration and maintain of speed while tracking the deep ball aren't there.

-DT Bromley looks very solid....and this is coming from a guy that didn't like the pick last year. He has great quickness within the box and brings a presence to the tackling. He can move guys with power and strength as well as pursue down the line.

-DE Odi looks really raw. Has all the pursuit speed and natural strength but he didn't do anything other than bull rush. Is that the plan with him? Not sure but he didn't look good until the second/third efforts when he was in there.

-Really impressed with QB Nassib. Underrated speed and quickness. Very good release. I think he gets more pop on his throws than Manning. He made some big time throws. I know it's against lesser competition but he was also behind a shoddy OL.

-WRs James Jones and Dwayne Harris will make an impact this year.

-My biggest fear of this team is still the OL. When Manning doesn't have the confidence in front of him he turns ugly.
It's only pre-season and to the extent they can,
Big Blue '56 : 8/23/2015 9:38 am : link
Wade and Unga made me sit up in my chair..James Jones is a lock and I felt so the moment he was signed...

I was impressed with Darkwa last year
Great stuff Sy...

it has been years since I've felt so disconnected because neither of their preseason games has been on (the NFLN shows a replay at inconvenient times but that's about it).
Thanks for taking the time to write this up Sy..

I agree with you that OL is the biggest question mark for this team going forward but as to your statement about Eli wouldn't that be true for any QB in the league..?
Agree on Richburg...
Jimmy Googs : 8/23/2015 9:47 am : link
I was not impressed with him last week or last night. As we all know, Eli isn't scrambling side to side, he basically just steps up and if there is no room there the Interceptions will come back.

Watching Kuhn is comical, but might as well have him take snaps for two more games unless we want more injuries on the D-line.

Do we really need to play pre-season games...

Well, if people actually start worrying
Big Blue '56 : 8/23/2015 9:50 am : link
about OBD now, it may very well be time for me to take another sabbatical..

what did you think of Schwartz RG and Schwartz RT?
OL showed some progress
JonC : 8/23/2015 9:53 am : link
very interested to see how it performs versus the Jets, especially the left side from C to LT, they're growing. Getting them coached up and getting Eli comfortable is the key to this season, in my book. The defense is going to have rough spots unless the DL is more consistent versus the run, and dictating more of the action.

Geremy Davis is going to make this team, he does the little things CW doesn't. One of CW/Parker/Jones makes the roster, two are likely out.

Big hole at SS, and I liked Currie as a darkhorse there. Jackson showed a lot of hustle but not sure he's a big loss at the same time. Meriweather definitely rusty and out of shape, but he might wind up the best option at SS.

Brett Jones is tiny, I'd wager his roster listing is boosted.

I want Unga on the team too
JonC : 8/23/2015 9:55 am : link
and that's where keeping four RBs or more than six WRs gets in the way.

Geoff was better at RG to my eye, he's not quick enough laterally and he winds up allowing defenders into his chest and just pushed back into the QB.
Hart Gettis Reynolds Cleary
Headhunter : 8/23/2015 10:07 am : link
Jones held their own against the level of competition they faced. The final OL will be interesting with a couple of surprises.
Agree with all of Sy's OP
SomeFan : 8/23/2015 10:10 am : link
except I had no idea what Bromley would bring to the table. Biggest concern is o-line followed in a neck and neck race with the DBs. Also, it is time to rid ourselves of the JPP of TEs. Banks killed him last night in one series.
I hope

Hart shows he can be a servicable back-up ata couple of positions for this season.

Jon I think Jones is a lock over the other two..he just looks very polished and if you have an injury to one of the top three he can step right in..

We all remember the days of relying on guys like Derek Hagan as backups...

and I think that was a courtesy to a vet to show off and give him a chance to catch on somewhere else. Yeah, as a 10 year vet, he was able to catch some passes against Jax's 3rd and 4th stringers but he's 31, doesn't play specials, he isn't getting any faster (he averaged less than 10 yards a catch as a wideout last season), and I don't see him beating out Parker (who is our punt returner), Davis (draft pick and special teamer), or Mr. Dread (special teamer extraordinare).

Hunt in the same category. We signed a free agent to return kicks. Hunt is ticketed for the practice squad.

Thank you. Actually I agree with everything with 1 caveat. Jackson basically got hurt because so many other guys are hurt he's taking to many snaps. So for the next 2 weeks the giants just need bodies at safety
Which part of it?

and I wouldn't be surprised to see Jennings
HomerJones45 : 8/23/2015 10:34 am : link
cut or traded if Darkwa shows he can handle pass blocking and we need a spot. Vereen makes Jennings' pass catching skills obsolete, Jennings is 30, he misses games every season with various maladies and Darkwa would be a cheaper alternative.

A long shot but it wouldn't shock me.
I think Parker should be the odd man out at WR.
arcarsenal : 8/23/2015 10:34 am : link
To me, his only redeeming quality is his familiarity with the offense and the slot position as "insurance" for Cruz. But I don't think that should be enough for him to lock up a spot.

I agree with just about everything. The one thing I am not worried about is Manning. This OL isn't worse than last year's and he did just fine behind that line with a dismal running game and little to throw to outside of Beckham. So, I'll not worry until the offense looks like this in a regular season game.
Boy that was a good write-up

There was a very big drop from the first-team JAX secondary -- so apples and oranges IMHO. Plus last night I actually thought Nassib was more accurate than Eli, which also affects the comparisons.

Matt M. : 8/23/2015 10:59 am : link
Parker is not our PR. Harris was signed for exactly that role. I would like to see him strt returning some kickoffs also, since Hunt is a longshot this year. Parker is a mediocre, at best, PR. Any value he seemed to have as a WR last year seems to have diminished. Jones, Harris, and Davis have all looked considerably better than Parker. I would say they have the 3 spots to lose after 2 games. Parker and Washington have very steep uphill battles.

Jones, in particular, stood out to me yesterday. There was a distinct difference in watching him over all the other WRs in terms of getting separation, crisp routes, and nice hands. Harris also made some very nice catches, especially near the sidelines and making some YAC.

Not sure what doesn't compute for you here. Maybe it was the comment on Adrien Robinson and Carl Banks criticism of his play?

That is certainly possible. Parker is 3 years younger and can play specials which I think is the deciding factor. Close call.
Wade and Thomas
Rong5611 : 8/23/2015 11:16 am : link
I stayed through the end of the 1st half. Players that flashed were CB Wade and LB Thomas. Based on the radio call on the way home, WR James Jones made the team last night, I think.

As far as OBJ, he definitely didn't want to get hit last night. The Giants were obviously trying to get him a deep ball as that's what the crowd came to see. It's almost like he was alittle miffed that the coaches were putting him at risk. I don't blame him, if he gets hurt we lose our best player. That said, he's going to have to man up when it starts for real. He will have a target on his back all year.

I understood that but Parker can return punts and play specials. Jones can't. Also think the fact that an 8 year vet was out there with 4th stringers and rookies says "showcase as a courtesy" and not "he should make the team". It's not like they need to see what he can do.
I really like what I am seeing
Emil : 8/23/2015 11:53 am : link
From Unga, Whitlock, and Darkwa. Whitlock might be listed as a FB, but he really is a special teams specialist is that were a position on the depth chart. Unga has excelled two weeks in a row, and has demonstrated he is capable of manning the MLB spot in case Beason misses time (which he likely will). Everyone knows MLB is not McClane's best position and he can "fill" in there, but Unga is a MLB. I would keep him over Herzlich at this point, and I like Herzlich more than most. The Giants have to keep Darkwa, he is too valuable to the team. He is a complete RB and good special teams player. If Jennings misses time (which he probably will) you'll wish you had Darkwa. I can see how the Giants keep Unga and Darkwa, not sure how they make room for Whitlock, but they should. Would be nice not to worry about STs this year.

As far as the WRs, I think Jones answered the call last night, showed great veteran leadership, and get open when needed. Geremy Davis had the next best performance last night and I think he has big upside. Right now Washington and Parker are probably on the outside looking in as the Giants will only keep 6 WRs.

I'm really curious how many OL the Giants will keep. It is noraml to keep 9 and I don't really see them keeping more than that. If they think Beatty will be back before the end of October, would they keep 8? Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, Scwartz, Newhouse, Jerry, Reynolds, and Mosley? Would not surprise me, but I think it is a risk.

It's preseason and I am not going to worry about Eli and OBJ, but I would like to see one good drive from them before the regular season. Would help me sleep at night without thinking too much.

JT reminded me of what a real linebacker looks like. It was awesome to watch.
Jackson is a big loss
KWALL2 : 8/23/2015 12:03 pm : link
He was a possible starter at S. Or the nickel and 3rd safety. He gave us an excellent matchup player at S to cover and provide range. That's huge for any team.

It's a big loss made worse because we don't have another player with that skillset.
I thought Schwartz looked good at RG..
arcarsenal : 8/23/2015 12:19 pm : link
But was much less effective when he slid over to RT.

I think he will be an upgrade over Jerry, though. And Newhouse again was solid. He held his assignments. Got help from Jennings on the first pass play but generally worked 1 on 1 and was able to keep the end from getting to Eli on dropbacks. He may well turn into a problem but I don't see it thus far.
On Odi
giantgiantfan : 8/23/2015 12:25 pm : link
its known that he will need to develop pass rush technique. He played 3-4 DE in college. It might not be until next year where he can contribute as a pass rusher, which isn't uncommon for 4-3 DEs, even those drafted higher than him.
RE: I really like what I am seeing
Rong5611 : 8/23/2015 1:36 pm : link
I think they keep 9 until Beatty comes back...too risky as Schwartz has to prove he can stay on the field.

he probably won't be more then the 4 or 5 receiver on the team, unless Randle can't go. He's better insurance for the passing game then Washington right now. Washington, I think is still eligible for the Peactice Squad. I agree with Eric's WR list.

Jay on the Island : 8/23/2015 7:41 pm : link
I am watching the second half now and I have keyed on OL Brett Jones. Man is this guy short he looks like a FB. What I noticed though was his pass protection. Off the snap he seems to immediately get pushed back a step but then he squares up, gets low has stood up the DT. He first came in at LG then shifted to RG in the 4th quarter. I am up to the Harris TD and Jones definitely can't make the 53 roster barring some more injuries but he does have potential if the Giants can live with his lack of size I think he deserves to be on the practice squad. Sy what are your feelings on Jones as you clearly have the best eye around here.
