Coughlin on why Markus Kuhn is starting...

Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/23/2015 5:57 pm
Q: What have you seen from Markus Kuhn so far in these first two preseason games? We’ve seen him with the first team almost all summer. What has he done to earn that trust in you guys?

A: Well, he’s a big, strong guy. We’ve talked an awful lot about stopping the run, and he can hold the point in there, which he’s done over and over. He’s very smart, and so we look at him as a guy that can anchor down in there and can knock back off the ball. And he’s pretty much done that.

Too much is made of this and other pressers..

One thing I'm certain of, TC is not losing it..He always has reasons, some of which have been stated here..

Unless he's the last man standing on the DL, MK is NOT starting on opening day..He may not even make the 53 imo

Agree BB56. But it begs the question: Why is this guy taking valuable reps away from Bromley and Ellis?

A lesson? As Mort C has said in the past(and still the most brilliant description of TC, imo), "Coughlin doesn't take a piss without a plan." Seriously, I am not concerned at all..
There are very few...

"valuable reps" to be had in a preseason game. Most are played without specific gameplans in place and they are nothing more than glorified scrimmages.

Year after year, we'll see a bubble guy get a lot of reps to see if they can shine. If they do, they stick - if they don't, they get cut.

I believe Kuhn is at that stage right now.

So one hopes, from all I read here.
Percy, there could be a myriad of reasons,

but I think FMiC's post you just replied to, probably makes the most sense, imv

who are some bubble guys who the Giants started in the preseason in previous years? I can't recall any at the moment. I know bubble guys get a lot of the playing time with second and third teamers, but barring injury usually projected starters get the start in preseason.
Last year..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/24/2015 10:12 am : link
you had Michael Cox and John Conner.

The year before you had Barden, Sash, Marvin Austin and Ojomo.

You'll see a pattern where in preseason games 2 and 3 where guys get extended looks. That isn't good.

Now, I will admit that TC's comments are a bit unusual, but I'm hoping it is more to show other players that if you work hard, you'll get noticed - and then they cut Kuhn:)
but why do they need more of a look at Kuhn?
Greg from LI : 8/24/2015 10:17 am : link
He's gotten fairly regular playing time over the past two seasons. It should have been obvious before this preseason how much he sucks.
I understand the extended look theory....
penkap75 : 8/24/2015 12:08 pm : link
but how do explain defensive captain?
If they don't know what they have inb Kuhn by now...
Torrag : 8/24/2015 1:27 pm : link
..I don't know what to say. He's a JAG. Plays with crappy pad level consistently. He gets moved off the ball consistently.

I saw more from Bromley in his first five snaps vs Jax than Kuhn has shown in his career. If he makes this club I'll start to question TC in a serious way for the first time since he took the reins.

I think running with the starters and the team captain bit is overkill if they just want to give him an extended look. I have an awful feeling he's somehow going to be the opening day starter.
Do you really expect TC
section125 : 8/24/2015 1:40 pm : link
to throw a player under the bus at a press conference. Plus if he craps on him and cuts him what do you think Kuhn's chances of being picked up by another team are?

No TC is not going to raw guy at a press conference.
c'mon
aquidneck : 8/24/2015 1:41 pm : link
If Kuhn starts opening day it's because, Spags chose him, not Coughlin, right?
effin auto correct
section125 : 8/24/2015 1:43 pm : link
Raw = destroy
Do you think he was going to rip the guy at a presser?
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/24/2015 1:43 pm : link
I think most people know what Kuhn's talent level is. He's a rotation/system guy at best. He seems to work hard and be a good team guy, but it's evident he's not very good. There's no reason to rip him a new one in public. The starters are Hankins and probably the new guy we got from the Jets.
