Do we pull a "Belichick" with Panthers' DE Frank Alexander?

Its not often that a starting defensive end is available for any other team to snatch. In the case of Panthers starting defensive end Frank Alexander, any NFL team looking for a guy to add to the pass-rushing rotation has a shot at claiming Alexander on waivers.

Its happening because Alexander will miss the entire season with a torn Achilles tendon. But instead of keeping him on the active roster until the point at which he could be shifted to injured reserve automatically, the Panthers opted to waive him with the injured designation. If hes unclaimed, Alexander will revert to Carolinas IR list.

Of course, some think that the unwritten rules of the NFL require other teams to stay away from injured players who are being passed through waivers. Three years ago, Patriots coach Bill Belichick defied that notion by claiming tight end Jake Ballard on waivers as the Giants tried to slip him through to IR. Coach Tom Coughlin wasnt happy.

Semipro Lineman : 8/25/2015 10:49 am : link
ProFootballTalk called him a starter despite having only 6 career starts in three seasons.
If that is in fact a professional courtesy (not claiming waived/IR)
jcn56 : 8/25/2015 10:50 am : link
then would we ever do it to Gettleman?
If you pick him up, don't you also assume
Thats Gold, Jerry : 8/25/2015 10:51 am : link
his contract and thus that affects your cap position.

Don't know his contract numbers but that might be the reason why.
The type of injury worries me.
robbieballs2003 : 8/25/2015 10:51 am : link
Plus, we are hurting for healthy bodies to practice right now. Who would we cut to pick up a guy for next year? I dont think we can afford to to do that.
what robbie said
giants#1 : 8/25/2015 10:54 am : link
We just lost a promising safety for the year because we didn't have enough warm bodies at the position to remove him late in a preseason game. Why tie up another roster spot on a guy who won't contribute in 2015?
He was suspended practically all of last season right?
Curtis in VA : 8/25/2015 10:55 am : link
Drugs or something. He's also been ejected for fighting.

Now a torn Achilles.

Hey, at least he has all his fingers.
Achilles repair is extremely effective nowadays..
Big Blue '56 : 8/25/2015 10:56 am : link
It's not like the Dan Marino achilles surgery..No guarantees of course, but it's nowhere near the career threat it used to be..
Haven't seen enough
Big Blue '56 : 8/25/2015 10:57 am : link
of him to form any kind of opinion..Fatman?
What is sort of funny..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/25/2015 10:57 am : link
is that some of the people who would want him signed would then curse Reese if Alexander got hurt in the future.

Probably would call alexander China Doll or some shit like that.
Won't be 26 until Christmas

He's decent. Flashed a lot this preseason, but he was still in a situation where he was fighting for the starting position.

Has a lot of potential and is a hard worker.

I agree that Gettleman would be a factor. I don't see the nice guy Giants doing this

that's a very good point, assuming they parted on good terms which I believe they did iirc
Why on Earth would anybody claim Alexander?
Enoch : 8/25/2015 2:47 pm : link
He's entering the 4th year of a 4-year rookie contract, and unless he's some kind of medical marvel, he's going to miss the whole year with this Achilles injury. The team claiming him would pay him $660K to sit on IR, plus all his medical expenses, and watch him hit the open market next Spring.

This isn't a case like Ballard where he still had 2 dirt-cheap years left before he became a vested veteran with full FA rights.

DE Frank Alexander passed through waivers unclaimed. Goes on IR for #Panthers.
