"10. I think Osi Umenyiora, who announced his retirement at Giants headquarters Wednesday, should go down in history as the best strip-sack artist of all time. He just had a knack for pulling them off and energizing the team at big moments& #8206;. Consider his 75-yard scoop-and-score against the 49ers in his first Super Bowl season, or his stripping of Aaron Rodgers in the postseason win at Lambeau in the second championship run. He never would reveal his trick, though, no matter how many times we asked. He'd always reply with something like, "It's what I do." Maybe in retirement he’ll divulge his secret?"

The Newhouse Injury
Emil : 8/27/2015 8:59 am : link
Doesn't sound good at all.

From Pat Traina: "Offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse, who went to execute a downfield block, suddenly crumpled to the ground in pain, grabbing his lower calf. Newhouse limped off the field, unable to bend his ankle, but refused the aid of a cart.

After being examined by both the trainers and the team doctors, Newhouse’s ankle was wrapped in an ice pack and he stood there, weight off his injured foot, watching the rest of practice before slowly limping off the field with a trainer by his side."

If no one contacted him (we heard someone stepped on the back of his foot) and he went down in a heap clutching his calf, that sounds very bad to me. Combined with not being able to bend or put weight on his foot. Sounds very much like an Achilles to me. I sure hope not.

I'm sure Schwartz will get first crack at RT against the Jets, but no doubt he is a better RG. Hart will get reps too. I didn't think Jerry was any worse than Schwartz at RT and would rather see Schwartz at RG and Jerry at RT for a bit.

Howard Cross said last night if the RT spot doesn't look good after Saturday night, Reese should get on the phone. I'm sure he's on the wire already. If Newhouse is gone, you'd have to call Jake Long again, wouldn't you?

Gosselin Dallas Morning News: Cowboys' focus on depth makes loss of Scandrick a punch they can take
"The Cowboys have 27 draft picks in camp from the previous five drafts (2010-14). Ten of them start and five have been to the Pro Bowl. And that doesn’t even count the NFL rushing champion who left this offseason in free agency.
The Cowboys supplemented their drafting since 2010 by signing two other starters (Barry Church and Ronald Leary) and three other major contributors (Dan Bailey, Cole Beasley and Lance Dunbar) as undrafted college free agents. The Cowboys were adding youth and playing that youth. They fielded the second-youngest lineup in the NFL last season on the way to a 12-4 record and an NFC East title.

And all those glowing numbers don’t even factor in the 2015 draft class, which top to bottom might be the best class of all. Six of the eight draft picks should make the roster with the other two finding shelter on injury lists.

Cornerback Byron Jones, defensive end Randy Gregory and linebacker Damien Wilson all have a chance to start as rookies, and pass rusher Ryan Russell and blocking tight end Geoff Swaim could become contributors off the bench. Undrafted college free agent La’el Collins also has a future as a starter, and Lucky Whitehead will get a long look in the return game.

Stephen Jones said this is the deepest team the Cowboys have taken to training camp in recent memory. My own memory tells me this might be the most quality depth the Cowboys have assembled since their Super Bowl era, especially on defense.

And that’s the side of the ball that needed to be fixed. Specifically, the pass rush.

Last year, the Cowboys didn’t have enough quality defensive linemen when they finished 28th in the league with 28 sacks. But this summer the Cowboys may have too many quality defensive linemen.

Recent draft picks DeMarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory, Ryan Russell, Ken Bishop and Ben Gardner are all in the mix. So are veteran holdovers Jeremy Mincey, Nick Hayden, Terrell McClain, Jack Crawford, Davon Coleman and Kenneth Boatright. Then factor in Pro Bowl pass rusher Greg Hardy, who was signed in free agency.

That’s 12. The Cowboys can’t keep them all.

“We’re going to cut people in the line who were a big part of our defense last year,” Stephen Jones said. “We weren’t dominant, but we weren’t bad. We’re going to cut guys who were on our 53, who played in games, in playoff games, for us.”

Newhouse ankle injury is not reported to be serious and he should be back soon, according to the Giants.

I know many of us have bashed Newhouse, myself included, but he is getting better and I would rather have him at RT than Schwartz. And Hart is not ready for a starting job yet.
