NGT: Fantasy Football Conundrum

MadPlaid : 8/27/2015 10:25 am
Hi.

I am in a 12-team keeper league, and I helped to fill a vacancy with a colleague of mine at work. I thought I was giving this guy a very nice opportunity. The team he was taking over has the 4th pick in the draft, and four good keepable players from last year. The league allows the owners to keep up to 3 players. When you keep the player, you sacrifice a corresponding draft pick. The players and the draft pick to be used are listed below.

I learned yesterday that my colleague chose not to keep any of the players he had to choose from. This totally surprised me because his keepables were good, and the draft picks he would be sacrificing were well worth the cost. Very strange.

I was thinking about calling my colleague to find out why he didn't keep the players. I feel he is making a serious mistake. Funny thing is although he is new to my league, he is an experienced FF player. He's currently in more than one league. Should I bother trying to help him, or should I just leave it alone?

Keepable Player / Draft Pick Sacrificed
Carlos Hyde, RB / 6
Russell Wilson, QB / 7
Joique Bell, RB / 9
Jordan Matthews, WR / 10
this is my problem with keeper leagues

Sure, those are decent value for the slots. But this new guy has no chance this year in a league where everyone is keeping their top 3 players. You're stealing his money.
I'm a redraft guy. Everyone has a fair shot.
Mathews seems like the only real no...

briainer there. Id prolly keep hyde at that value, but dont think its absurd to throw him back.
A Few Are Interesting

Matthews at a 10 is a no brainer. I can understand maybe having preferences against Wilson or Hyde but the Matthews on is crazy to me.

I think you are missing an important piece of information. This keepable league is unique. The only players that are eligible to be kept are selected in rounds 9-16. And then, they are only eligible to kept by that team a maximum of 3 years. The truly best players, i.e. Aaron Rodgers, are typically available every year. We use the keepable rounds to take a shot on the next big thing. Last year, Odell was selected in the 16th round. That owner is a very happy man right now.
Yeah, this has always been my question with keeper leagues

Why would someone stay in it if they are already behind the eight ball?

I have enough problem with turn over in my re draft league

I get your point everyone
MadPlaid : 8/27/2015 10:43 am : link
these players aren't the end all be all. But they represent value at the draft pick they are being kept. Everyone is being selected ahead of where they can be kept in the mock drafts I have been reviewing. He can save his early picks for good players while his bench is already filled with decent to good players.
When bringing in a new
NJGiantFan84 : 8/27/2015 10:45 am : link
guy, every current team should select their keepers. Then the new guy can select any players & their draft value from the entire league.

It's similar to what the NFL does with expansion when the teams can "protect" certain players but must make others available.

Frankly Plaid

I would keep your mouth shut. It's his choice and he made it. If he does anything else that is outrageously bad, you could ask him, "Are you sure about that?"

You could ask him why he chose not to keep any of those players, and see what he says. He may have jelled and forgot he could keep them, or it's part of his master plan for Fantasy Football Domination.

However, I would make sure that I didn't ask him the question in a way that suggests assisting him or that he doesn't know what he is doing. If he is an experienced FF player, he might be insulted if you try to help him, or he may not want to share with you what his plan is.

In the end, it's your call. Follow your gut. Good luck.

Not keeping Matthews for a 10th rd pick is very stupid. I'd also really consider Hyde for the 6th. The other 2 I wouldn't keep. Especially not Bell.
Thanks, Riffy

sage advise.

Arc, this is what I was thinking. Although, I do consider Wilson is worth it for a 7. Close, but worth it.
I would call him
Reale01 : 8/27/2015 12:28 pm : link
Make sure he understands the rules and leave it at that. Something like "Hey I noticed that you did not keep anyone. Did you know you could keep someone at one round less than they were drafted? For example you could keep Mathews for a 9th round pick?"

Leave it at that.
others have said it
giants#1 : 8/27/2015 12:34 pm : link
but I would just give him a call and confirm he understands the rules for keeping players.

Though the only "outrageous" one is Matthews. The rest are somewhat debatable.
Thanks

I'll think about it.

I am wondering if the guy thinks the numbers correspond to pick numbers and not rounds (i.e he thinks Matthews would cost him 10th overall, Wilson 7th, etc.. )

I just don't understand how anyone who is even remotely familiar with fantasy football would decline to keep a player going in 3rd rounds for a 10th rd pick. There's no reasonable argument against doing it.

A surefire starting RB in a 12 team league with a 6th rounder? That is outrageous to me. So is Wilson with the 7th. What QBs will even be available by then? Maybe I'm not understanding this keeper league but I think everyone but Bell is a no-brainer to me.
A little more detail about the keepables
MadPlaid : 8/27/2015 2:39 pm : link
As I mentioned before, the only players eligible to be kept are those who were drafted between the 9th to the 16th rounds. So the object is to scout out and land the up and coming player or rookie. Each of these players are eligible to be kept because they were drafted late in our draft. All of them except Matthews are eligible to be kept two years, this year and next. Matthews was drafted in the 13th round last year, so the owner can keep him for the next 3 years. We have a rule that those drafted between the 13th and 16th round get an extra year of keepable eligibility. So as you can see, Matthews is especially valuable.

In addition, when you keep a player, you sacrifice a draft pick three rounds prior to where you drafted him the previous year. In Matthews case, he was selected in the 13th round, so this year, the owner must give up a 10th round pick to keep him. The pick given up moves up three rounds every year you keep the player. Next year, if the owner wants to keep Matthews, he has to give up a 7th round pick, and the following year, it is a 4th round pick.

I think it was very short sighted by this owner to not keep some of these players. Its like he wasn't looking at the long term big picture.
Yeah I don't get what he's doing at all
giantsfan44ab : 8/28/2015 8:46 am : link
Matthews has a chance to be top 15, maybe top 10 this year, and certainly over the next 2 years. Same goes for Evans.

Wilson is a near lock to be a top 4 fantasy QB, that value is absolutely amazing.
Or sorry it was Hyde not evans
giantsfan44ab : 8/28/2015 8:48 am : link
Hyde plays in a system based off of the run and play action. Don't think 1100 yards and 6 TDs is out of question for him. Who are you getting better than that in the 6th?
