Hi.
I am in a 12-team keeper league, and I helped to fill a vacancy with a colleague of mine at work. I thought I was giving this guy a very nice opportunity. The team he was taking over has the 4th pick in the draft, and four good keepable players from last year. The league allows the owners to keep up to 3 players. When you keep the player, you sacrifice a corresponding draft pick. The players and the draft pick to be used are listed below.
I learned yesterday that my colleague chose not to keep any of the players he had to choose from. This totally surprised me because his keepables were good, and the draft picks he would be sacrificing were well worth the cost. Very strange.
I was thinking about calling my colleague to find out why he didn't keep the players. I feel he is making a serious mistake. Funny thing is although he is new to my league, he is an experienced FF player. He's currently in more than one league. Should I bother trying to help him, or should I just leave it alone?
Keepable Player / Draft Pick Sacrificed
Carlos Hyde, RB / 6
Russell Wilson, QB / 7
Joique Bell, RB / 9
Jordan Matthews, WR / 10
I'm a redraft guy. Everyone has a fair shot.

I think you are missing an important piece of information. This keepable league is unique. The only players that are eligible to be kept are selected in rounds 9-16. And then, they are only eligible to kept by that team a maximum of 3 years. The truly best players, i.e. Aaron Rodgers, are typically available every year. We use the keepable rounds to take a shot on the next big thing. Last year, Odell was selected in the 16th round. That owner is a very happy man right now.
I have enough problem with turn over in my re draft league
It's similar to what the NFL does with expansion when the teams can "protect" certain players but must make others available.
You could ask him why he chose not to keep any of those players, and see what he says. He may have jelled and forgot he could keep them, or it's part of his master plan for Fantasy Football Domination.
However, I would make sure that I didn't ask him the question in a way that suggests assisting him or that he doesn't know what he is doing. If he is an experienced FF player, he might be insulted if you try to help him, or he may not want to share with you what his plan is.
In the end, it's your call. Follow your gut. Good luck.
Leave it at that.
Though the only "outrageous" one is Matthews. The rest are somewhat debatable.
I just don't understand how anyone who is even remotely familiar with fantasy football would decline to keep a player going in 3rd rounds for a 10th rd pick. There's no reasonable argument against doing it.

A surefire starting RB in a 12 team league with a 6th rounder? That is outrageous to me. So is Wilson with the 7th. What QBs will even be available by then? Maybe I'm not understanding this keeper league but I think everyone but Bell is a no-brainer to me.
In addition, when you keep a player, you sacrifice a draft pick three rounds prior to where you drafted him the previous year. In Matthews case, he was selected in the 13th round, so this year, the owner must give up a 10th round pick to keep him. The pick given up moves up three rounds every year you keep the player. Next year, if the owner wants to keep Matthews, he has to give up a 7th round pick, and the following year, it is a 4th round pick.
I think it was very short sighted by this owner to not keep some of these players. Its like he wasn't looking at the long term big picture.
Wilson is a near lock to be a top 4 fantasy QB, that value is absolutely amazing.
