I haven't seen any of the new ones, only the originals. One of them (the new movies) came on one of my movie channels a while back, and I found the acting so horrible, I couldn't continue to watch it....I think it was a young Hans Solo being portrayed
to see it in IMAX. But, I can't wait for this film and have already told my wife this is one film I must see in the theater and I'm taking our boys (they will be 11 and 6). she is welcome to come, but if she's not interested I'm still taking them.
Return of the Jedi was much than Ewoks. Also, I was 7 years old when I saw it in the theater.
Give me Return of the Jedi over any of those three turds, and I'll eat that sh-t sandwich once a day and twice on Sundays.
7 years old. I was 12 when the first one came out. I loved it. You know why? BECAUSE ITS A KIDS MOVIE. They ALL are. So - no hatin' on the new one's allowed! They're all great, but none of them were created for 50-year-old me, and neither should the new one.
I LOVED the fact that my kids were able to enjoy Star Wars just as I did... as new films.
could this be the highest grossing film of all time? Â
shell out the $$$ for IMAX. There is no better way to see a movie. And I honestly expect to see this movie multiple times opening weekend, because I am a nerd like that! This movie is going to break every box office record there is, not adjusted for inflation obviously.
Yea. I definitely wasn't complaining. It just shows how much the world is a part of culture. All you have to do is show a dude with a lightsaber with a couple of lines of cryptic dialogue and it captures my attention.
Yeah, the Ewoks were lame, but even if every character in ROTJ were an Ewok it still would have been a million light years better than all three prequel movies combined.
RE: RE: RE: Those three prequels don't exist in my Star Wars canon. Â

I dug the prequel's. Thought they delivered in spades, bad acting and hole ridden plots be damned. So poo on you.
Also includes minor spoilers about the main baddie and apparent new hero. I'll provide a link too but don't open it if you don't want spoilers. Again, these are pretty mild but some don't want any at all so out of courtesy to them.......
From the moment Kylo Ren first ignited his vicious-looking broadsaber in the first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans have speculated about the true nature of the character, this mysterious Knight Of Ren. Why is his lightsaber so ragged? Why is his title not 'Darth'? The answer to the latter, it turns out, is actually very simple, as some fans had already surmised. "Kylo Ren is not a Sith," confirms JJ Abrams in the new issue of Empire. "He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”
Snoke, you will recall, is a performance-captured digital character played by Andy Serkis, who can be heard growling the voiceover on the first teaser. Aside from shedding a little light on Ren’s origins, Abrams gave some background on the state of the universe when The Force Awakens begins, including the origins of the First Order, who are not quite the Imperial remnant many had taken them to be.
“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’” Abrams reveals. “What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?” Minor Star Wars spoilers from JJ Abrams - ( New Window )
I know these films are not using anything from the expanded universe Â
But, the expanded universe did have a lot of material that would make sense to describe what you are seeing. First of all, these are not true stormtroopers, as their armor is slightly different. Second, the clips do show remnants of destroyed Star Destroyers and the TIEs in the trailers are newer versions.
As related to the expanded universe, the explanations were simple. The Rebels blew up the Death Star and killed the Emperor in one fell swoop. On top of that, Vader was killed. There was still a battle that you don't see in ROTJ to defeat the remaining ships in the fleet. I don't recall if they were outright defeated, surrendered, or retreated. But, it was a case of cut off the head (Emperor) and the body (fleet/troops) will follow.
The Rebels went on to continue fighting and took over Coruscant to establish a new government with Mon Mothma as President. However, fighting with remaining Imperial troops went on for many years. There was infighting with a lot of the troops over who would lead. There was a separate story arc with Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was in a remote destination. There were remote Imperial bases, mostly for development, where they were unaware of the defeat and were still preparing for their future deliveries of weapons, etc.
So, while the Rebels won in ROTJ, the fighting was not over. Now, the explanation I read last week about this film is that this is a following (almost cultish) loyal to the Empire and worshipping the Empire. However, none of the villains are Sith. There are powerful figures entrenched in the Dark Side, though. This is sort of like a resurrection of the Empire years in the making.
that ROTJ is "a kid's movie" I'll give you it was a family movie that people of all ages could relate to and enjoy -- so what.
Second, shit on the ewoks all you want -- they didnt say stupid shit like Ja-Ja Binks (or even talk) and they were hardly the centerpoint of the movie.
Plus, Leia in a bikini was hawt.
Looking forward to seeing what this series can do with better producers this go-round.
They destroyed the Death Star(s) but there was still a whole galaxy of Empire troops and ships...
I'm a Star Wars movie fan and loved the films, even the prequels. Although I never read any Star Wars books or watched the animated cartoon series.
Not sure if asking this is spoilers for the new films but for those that read the books. What happened on the Emperor and Darth Vader died, along with the destruction of the Death Star. Who took over control of the remaining Empire troops and ships?
I agree that ROTJ was not labeled as a kids movie. Hell, the Ewoks weren't even there solely for that reason. The initial thoughts of Lucas were for Wookies to join the fight in ROTJ. But, since he was not sure he would ever get to make all the movies, he introduced Wookies in New Hope in the form of Chewbacca. For whatever reason, he wanted something new in ROTJ. I think it would have been awesome to see an army of Wookies in the fight. Plus, the Wookies lived primitively, as the Ewoks did, but were technologically advanced. Chewie is so handy on the Falcon for a reason. The Ewoks are the main reason nobody ever mentions ROTJ as the best of the bunch or even their favorite. But, with or without Ewoks, that film is a thousand times better than any of the prequel movies.
Imagine instead of the filming the Ewoks battle on Endor, Lucas had a similar style Battle of Kashyyyk (linked below) featuring the Wookiees.
Yes, the technology was not what it was in 1983 but it would have been better then what they produced with the Ewoks.
Lucas at that time was ALL about merchandise sales and switched the final scripts on several plot points besides the whole Ewok\Wookie switch.

The issue of whether Harrison Ford would return for the final film arose during pre-production. Unlike the other stars of the first film, Ford had not contracted to do two sequels, and Raiders of the Lost Ark had made him an even bigger star. Ford suggested that Han Solo be killed through self-sacrifice. Kasdan concurred, saying it should happen near the beginning of the film to instill doubt as to whether the others would survive, but Lucas was vehemently against it and rejected the concept.
Gary Kurtz, who produced Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back but was replaced as producer for Return of the Jedi, claimed in 2010 that the ongoing success with Star Wars merchandise and toys led George Lucas to reject the idea of killing off Han Solo in the middle part of the film during a raid on an Imperial base. Luke Skywalker was also to have walked off alone and exhausted like the hero in a Spaghetti Western but, according to Kurtz, Lucas opted for a happier ending to encourage higher merchandise sales
Along with Yoda being included in the 3rd film when originally Lucas didn't have that in his first script.
Obi-Wan Kenobi would return to life from his spectral existence in the Force. (I'm actually glad they scrapped that ideal from the movie) Battle of Kashyyyk - ( New Window )
I said that a battle with Ewoks would have been badass. Although, maybe that should read "could have". In Revenge of the Sith, I thought this was another example of Lucas dropping the ball. The battle on Kashyyyk was bland and pretty much a waste of time.
I am still trying to get my hands on copies of the original theatrical releases for all 3 of the original trilogy. Everything that Lucas added after the fact is pure shit. Even that stupid ring in the explosions bothers me.
to wrap up a legendary story. Perfect? No...would have been great if they went with the original plan to have the battle take place on Kashyyk, Chewie's home planet. But doesn't mean it wasn't still a great movie, IMO

the first couple of Star Wars movies. They were full of adventure, and light hearted situations and characters. After that they became dark, deep and brooding. I totally lost interest and didn't bother seeing the last couple. I hope the new movie returns to the original formula.
The franchise hasn't produced a great film since 1980 Â
People need to get over the Ewoks already. They didn't ruin that movie. There was a ton of great stuff in it. And Yoda was a Frank Oz puppet, so I'm not sure what the "muppet" charge is supposed to mean.
I heard that, but thought it was only a month...

Trailers give away EVERYTHING now.
Hard to temper my excitement - really sounds like the crew making this one is doing it right this time

Having kids watch the movies has really lessened by venom toward the prequels. Clone Wars being so well done has helped too.
