I wish we had a safety with his ability on our roster too

but there is zero doubt the Giants did what they had to do in releasing him
maybe now

he can start sending his child support payments
Regardless of how you feel

about why he is still not a Giant, it seems to be another feather in the Giants cap of helping a guy straighten his life out, by cutting him in this case. And a nod to Baltimore for giving him a chance away from his homies in NJ.
Hopefully he's matured, as I would think the contract extension would indicate, and just does what he does.
Too bad he used up all his options here.
Hill had two suspensions
WillieYoung : 8/27/2015 4:22 pm : link
one for Adderal and one for pot and as to the pot suspension, it appears the league believed, as Hill claimed, that it was second hand smoke because they suspended him for 6 games when their policy was 8. The fact the Ravens now sign him one year before they have to, indicates they have no character concerns about him. But don't let facts get in the way of your ridiculous arguments that we "saved" him by cutting him and it was in the best interest of the team to cut him. The best interests of the team would have him starting against Dallas.

He was told what would happen if he got one more suspension..He did and they followed up on their promise...It's why we are one of the better franchises to emulate..AND, we have 2 SB in the last 7 years to boot..
I am 100% for their decision, even if he becomes an All-Pro

It wasn't about pot, Adderol or suspensions. It was about repeatedly lying and the threat of losing a guy for a year or more to suspension, which is likely since he hasn't gone 18 months since coming into the league without getting in trouble.
Ridiculous
Maccorkles667 : 8/27/2015 5:06 pm : link
So he smoked a bit of pot? So, what? I've never smoked weed in my life and now we're down a great player. We could be using him this year!!!
Hill was suspended three times

He would be kicked out of the league by now. Giants did him a favor by cutting him. I truly hope he finds success with Baltimore. He needs to stay the hell away from Jersey and his old crew. Real friends would have his back instead of riding it.

Cooper would be cut if that was the case. I'm going to take the Giants opinion over yours, sorry man.

And you haven't afdressed the issue here which is his multiple infractions, being a poor teammate, and admitting NY isn't a good environment from him. Is any of that refutable?

Comparing him to Cooper is pointless. Insert any player and it's the same argument. Keeping dodging the real issue though, you've been great at it.

I wonder if they are having second thoughts about not re-signing Antrel Rolle? Nobody wants to overpay a player past his prime, but if you have no one to replace him, and you're in a make or break year, sometimes you have to.

So case closed? We can't discuss the merits of it being illegal in the NFL or at least the harshness of the consequences? It's a message board for God's sake.

We can but we're discussing Will Hill's release as a FO failure so thats missing the point. His wasn't a weed issue. It was A) a proximity to bad influences and B) an inability to follow rules while already on two strikes

Glad if he's turned it around. But fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. 3 times doesn't need a rhyme because it's idiocy - much less a 4th, esp given point A

It's Baltimore. Have you seen Baltimore lately. I can see his boys in NJ now. If only there was a way to get to Baltimore so we could hang out with Will again. It they want to hang out, they will hang out. If Hill doesn't want to change, he won't change no matter where he is. For his sake I hope he changes. For the Giants, you can only give a guy so many chances.

I am constantly amazed how some will NEVER get it..I am equally amazed how I and others continue to try to make any sense to them..

Let me simplfy(If I can): Most if not all of us DO NOT CARE about him smoking weed or using banned substances..He assured the Giants he would not use/do anything that might get him suspended..HE LIED and was suspended 3 times..Not once, not twice, but three times a lady..

Grt it now? No, you will never get it..Ever..

Even though I am not certain you will understand this, I'll weigh in on this.

My belief is the 'best interest' of the team was cutting Hill when the Giants did. Here is why.

He undermined the authority of the coaching staff by repeatedly violating the rules. It happened multiple times and the Giants staff reached a breaking point with him. Had he stayed, the coaches risked losing authority with the players. That can't happen for an organization trying to succeed.

Hill was a cancer on the team and needed to be excised from the body.

Some here will either not understand this, disregard it, or disagree, and continue to argue he was released because of pot. There is only so much explaining that can be done sometimes.

So the team totally needs to cut bait with injured players...

He has proven to be a first class scumbag who continues to put himself in questionable and legal situations. I don't care if he goes on to be an all pro or not; he needed to be out of this lockeroom. Plus, he was told this would happen and they stuck to their word.

It really is an IQ test that so many people either have no clue why he was cut or want him just to improve a unit, no matter what the long-term effect is.

One more suspension and he has to apply just to come back after a year!

Hill
Les in TO : 8/28/2015 5:19 pm : link
just like another talented defender aldon smith was going to break the rules again and again in NY. he needed a fresh start, but he's still one bad choice away from being suspended for a year, and the likelihood that he will make a bad choice given the people he hangs out with is high.
It's great that so many realize that Will Hill was not let go due to
Reese's Pieces : 8/28/2015 5:47 pm : link
smoking marijuana. It was because he got caught smoking marijuana.

If the league had never suspended Hill then the Giants would still have cut Hill, I guess, according to what they are saying, since the Giants did not release Hill for smoking marijuana.

So why did they let him go. That's a little vague to me, but most seem to think that it was because he lied to the team. I think players lying to their team is pretty common. And is it lying if the player meant it when he said it, but couldn't stop himself from committing that vice again?

In the 90s I volunteered at a homeless shelter in Port Jefferson. At least a third of their "clients" were Vietnam War vets whose lives had been ruined by the war. They lived in the street and drank. This shelter would take them in and clothe them and send them off to a rehabilitation program for a month. I remember one of them on the day he was released from the program with a flask in his back pocket.

Did the shelter wash their hands of him and throw him out. No, they gave him another chance. They would have given him 70 x 7 chances. It wasn't his fault.

But lying is a serious matter. In the 1940 campaign FDR told every mother in America that he would keep their sons out of the war. Actually he had already met with Churchill to discuss war strategy and he had American destroyers already fighting German U-Boats in the North Atlantic. One had been torpedoed and sunk.

But FDR was never suspended or released. I guess that's because he never got caught.

But lying is a serious matter. But some would say that the Giants in their history had at least a couple of dozen players who did things even worse than lie or smoke weed, and you could start with #56. If hypothetically LT had played for the Giants last year and gotten caught swapping some one else's urine for his own, should Reese have released him? Would he have released him?

This is not Father Flanagan's Boys Town. This is the NFL and it's all about winning. I didn't enjoy the 17 year period of no post-season, and I'm not enjoying this streak. If you don't enjoy a sport that allows so many players who fail your morality tests, then go root for the Mets.

Sorry this was so long. I'll go away now. I just can't stand to see my team back in the NFL basement with Eagles and Cowboy fans making fun of them. If they stink again this year, I probably will stop watching the games. It just hurts too much.

Co-mingling the comment "my team" and that "if they stink... you will stop watching because it hurts too much" is just awful. I am assuming you either being dramatic or are really not a fan.

Kinda surprising how much of the deal is guaranteed

According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth a total of $7 million, with $5 million in guarantees, per a source who has seen the deal.

But I guess that's the trade off for what looks like a relatively low total salary
