Sad news from @69News - Darryl Dawkins passed away today at 58. Just saw him at Sixers draft party. Always smiling.

While he always carried a bit of weight, he didn't look too bad a couple months ago. Wonder if it was a heart attack.
aww man

RIP. A local legend here. He coached a nearby college LCCC, and didn't live far. Did a lot in the community.

From everything I've heard, a very good man.

Can make an argument that he was one of the greatest high school players ever - drafted straight out of 12th grade before that was a thing.

Solid career.

He also probably committed a foul on the way to the Pearly Gates:)
If he tweaked..

so happy and full of life. He carried himself with such a confident swagger. He wasn't that old and he looked pretty good, this was unexpected. RIP.

I was recovering from a serious car accident at University hospital in Newark. I was 17 at the time. Dawkins was in the room next to mine. I forget what he was recovering from. We used to have wheel chair races in the hallway. He used to help pick me up and kicked my ass when I was depressed. He was a very nice guy.

I had the good fortune of meeting. Always felt he could have used 3 years of college rather than being developed in the 76ers rotation with Caldwell Jones. Had the talent to be an immortal.
Much too young

I think he was the reason they changed the rims; because he was breaking so many backboards.
I regard him as the first modern center

Skipped college. Pure power player. Shaq before his time.
