Ranaan: Practice Review of Moore and Odighizuwa

It's an interesting afternoon. Moore's lack of work is staggering. It sure makes it seem his role is destined to be as a situational pass-rusher.

Odighizuwa took a lot more reps. He was a staple with the second-team defense, and flashed the skills that have quickly impressed the Giants. No wonder rookie right tackle Bobby Hart told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday that Odighizuwa was the most difficult player he's faced so far because of his size and speed.

I think O2 is going to find his way into a lot of snaps this year

Situational or rotational?

This is Spags, not Fewell afterall
The opportunities are there......

In the beginning there will be a lot of rotations.....then the cream rises to the top, and those guys will get the most playing time....
Our first two draft picks are already starters,

it looks like OO has a future in the starting lineup.
Once again, I learn more from this kind of reporting --
CT Charlie : 8/27/2015 4:20 pm : link
of what I want to learn -- than I do from endless columns of speculation. Thank you, Jordan. I appreciate your detailed, unvarnished, factual observations.

As for Damantre, you have to wonder what's in his head. Is he an Osi? An Alan Iverson? Is there a method to his malaise? What's the chicken, what's the egg? With his talent, I'd try to burn down the house, so to speak -- want to be loved as a teammate and feared as an opponent -- busting my way through every play, every practice.
Moore worries me as being one of those guys who teases you

with flashes of "wow" but in the end doesn't make any plays. I hope I'm wrong.
If it's me, I start Moore..

He needs to get the experience already. Give him a chance. He seems to be getting better and better which is a good thing.

That's why this worries me:

2:30 p.m. – The Giants begin practice with special teams work. ...Odighizuwa is part of the punt team. His speed shows when they run downfield. The rookie is one of the first interior linemen there every time.

If OO is destined to become a valuable starter as early as this, get him off the KO ST, sooner than later. Bad stuff happens to guys there.

Moore seems to be one of those guys whom BBI rates much more highly than the coaching staff. It has been proven over and over again during the Reese tenure: draft picks who don't see the field consistently during their first or, if not by then, second year are destined for release, quietly, and way too long after they should have been. I'm not sure Moore ends that way, but he's making a good case for the general rule, even if the team is short DEs. Imagine his reps if JPP were here.

Under Spags Moore should have a new lease on life, much greater PT. If he does not (and other than because of further injuries to the DE position), that will be pretty damning.

LT , Banks and anybody else BP thought needed played specials.
If O2 continues to improve at this rate, and stays healthy,
81_Great_Dane : 8/27/2015 4:59 pm : link
he's going to be the kind of star DE you need in a 4-3. Too bad JPP isn't around, they'd have been a nice pair of bookends.
It sounds like
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/27/2015 5:00 pm : link
They are giving OO more reps since he is a rookie and due to the fact that JPP is MIA they are giving him more reps to get up to speed. They are going to rely on all the DES and the rookie needs as many reps as possible now.
there's nothing wrong
Les in TO : 8/27/2015 5:19 pm : link
if moore becomes more of a pass rushing specialist for second and long, third down and "hurry up" offense type of situations or against pass-heavy teams. kabeer gbaja biamila and simeon rice are two guys who couldn't defend the run if their life depended on it but they knew how to get to the QB on obvious passing situations. not saying moore will have similar careers and in an ideal world he would be a stout two way defender, but may as well leverage his strengths as they exist today.
Fred Dean was a good

situational pass rusher. If we get that from Moore, I'm happy
Victor
ColHowPepper : 8/27/2015 6:08 pm : link
you may be right, though I do not recall that being the case; I was very tuned in to those teams. But let's say you're right. What's different between then and now?

BP's teams were tougher, top to bottom (loved him for that) and his teams were deeper, esp. at LB, the players you're using as examples on ST: Banks, Taylor, Reasons, Carson, Headen, Byron Hunt, my handle-sake Pepper Johnson.

My goodness, how we were stacked at LB back then!!!
All I'm saying is that if OO has a chance to be a bit of a difference maker on a defense with a ton of ???, don't feed him into the buzzsaw of return teams where laws of physics chew up and spit you out no matter how talented you may be.
Don't get down on Moore
KWALL2 : 8/27/2015 7:06 pm : link
He will be a big contributor this year. He just can't hold up be the run. Odi, Wynn, and Ayers will handle most of the work at DE Moore will be a situational pass rusher (and a good one). He's looked good rushing the passer in the preseason. Made some nice moves vs the JAC starting LT.

My prediction of ODi starting week 1 is looking good. He's going to be an excellent player for us. Great draft value too!

KWALL2 : 8/27/2015 7:17 pm : link
You can't start Moore. He's not strong enough vs the run. Vs Cin he was tossed around by the rookie TE from Rutgers (Id call him a very average blocker).

Same thing vs JAC. Their TEs could handle Moore. You cant have that from your starting DE.

However, his pass rush was very good in both games. Vs Joeckel, Moore gave him problems with his pass rush.

I think he's a situational pass rusher. Nothing wrong with that. He can come in and give us some QB pressure at DE.
One more thing.
KWALL2 : 8/27/2015 7:21 pm : link
It's time to end the Jenkins at DE experiment. Odi should be the starter.

I'd be more comfortable with Odi and Selvie at ends to start. At least we'd be able to set the edge and not be run over up front. Mixing Ayers and Moore in some of Spags old Oklahoma variants wouldn't be a terrible idea either if we have to LBs who cover and use that hybrid front he used to toss out with Kiwi standing up as a 5th DL.

I'm confident that Spags will use folks where they fit best, he excels at finding what players do well and letting them do it, but it does take time and will be bumpy.
Moore probably sia 3-4 DE
bc4life : 8/28/2015 9:43 am : link
and the Giants have made that mistake before - thinking they can always put weight on a player to get what they want. Some athletes have every specific ideal playing weights. You were never going to "weight-room" him into being a legitimate 4-3 DE.

Don't you mean 3-4 OLB? Wouldn't he have to be even bigger to be a 2-gap RDE in a 3-4 system?

thought so bc.

Let's hope they both get some significant time and show something vs. the Jets. It would be a nice confidence boost.

with our D-Line and while inexperienced in some spots, guys like Moore, Owa, Hankins Selvie and bringing Kennard in and perhaps a safety like Collins or Merriweather at times, and I think we will bring the heat.

Yeah I don't get the Kuhn love from the staff either. If he is getting significant reps over Bromley it makes me worry that Bromley really sucks.
