We're going to have the lowest payroll in baseball.
Right? We can't just not sign people because they cost too much or well get nobody. Free agency is essentially an auction and so by definition the team that gets him will have paid over his market as determined by all the other teams in the league.
If they don't sign those guys then the only way to make up for that money wise is if they hand out longer term contracts to Harvey and Duda.
Is if he's offered and accepted a QO. He's eligible for that, right? I'm not sure how that works but, they get a pick of some sort back.
Yes he's eligible but it would be stunning to see
1. Mets gamble 16+ million on Daniel Murphy
2. A young father deciding to take 1 year 16 over what surely will net him more years somewhere else. Not at 16, but 3 for 36 type money. It's a near lock he's an ex-Met.
No one expected Cuddyer to get the QO, so with Murphy - who knows. It is doubtful, but does he take a one year over market deal at the risk of missing out on a 4 year deal? Will be very interesting to see how this plays out. More nights like last night increase the odds he gets the QO and Mets get a pick for him :)
Cespedes. It may or may not be him, we can't be focused on him and only him at the risk of grossly overpaying. He has shown the FO the importance of the big bat to this lineup in particular. Worst case scenario is Cespedes is replaced by the trade deadline next July. Worst case, so I wouldn't sweat it too much today.
BTW - cool move on Tigers part. Fulmer missed pitching against his former team the other day, so they sent him out as captain to the plate. Small, but very professional thing to do.
think a missing part of the equation is how ready they think Herrera is to step in and give "Murphy" production and/or Flores at 2b and someone else at SS.
Thor's worst season was last season and he still posted a 3.70 FIP with 9.81 K/9 and we all know about the PCL/LV. Nimmo's OPS this season is now... .711 and is now barely playing. Something is amiss. Shecky is now basically the 2nd "source" to comment on Nimmo's "off field" concerns. Conforto being told he needed to grow up would be similar to Thor.
the concern is Nimmo's "issues" are impacting his production. Not "he's been really good but can be a baby". He's been poor and apparently according to Shecky has some off field stuff that is holding him back.
Working and work ethic arent the issue - just working hard on the wrong things. Needs to want to be great. Has to fall in love with the game again.
Thanks Shecky. Lopez is generally highly thought of throughout the game so I found this to be surprising. Again, I think there must be an injury issue here... 3 straight games not in the lineup?
for context all 3 of BA, BP and milb.com moved Thor's prospect ranking UP following last season despite the inflated era. Nobody is doing that with Nimmo this year.
I could understand if it's frustration boiling over. I'm sure he thinks he's better than what he's done to this point. A month ago he was in the futures game with Conforto, now his buddy is in the show and achieving while he's looking lost.
Boy, not only are the Mets hot, but they seem to have a horseshoe Â

That's fair. Just don't think Thor's "issues" were the same. Thor was basically being put through finishing school. He was almost a 2014 callup.
there is a mandate from the top to play potential September call-ups the week or to leading up to the month. Makes perfect sense that Ceciliani, Kirk, and EYJ would get the majority of the playing time leading up to Sep 1.
AAA- Lugo (Interesting arm)
AA- Koch (could be a 2016 Mets pen option if not claimed)
A+ Reyes (potential MLB reliever)
A Prevost (huge kid but very meh season overall for his level)
BK Villasmil
Kingsport Crismatt (nice year)

And bench him 3 straight games? Sorry I'm not buying that one at all. To play yes? Sure. If that were the case why even promote him when they did? He has 25 total ab's the last 2 weeks (Since August 14). He hit .120 with 10 k's in his last 25 ab's and suddenly stopped playing. Also hasn't been used as a pinch hitter or runner. Yesterday Jayce Boyd was used over him.
but Im back on the offer Murphy a QO train. 90% chance he turns it down and after his recent resurgence he likely gets a nice deal on the open market. If he takes it, its a one year commitment. Its not some albatross. And he is an extremely useful player anyway and would protect against Wright's back. Its a win win for us.
wouldn't he have been left in AA? or sent back to AA when it was clear he wouldn't play at all? His performance/injury are the issue here. Bottom line 3/25 with 10 k's sends you to the bench. Question is if something is ailing him or not.

Boyd over him is odd so maybe he did tweak something. I hadn't checked the box last night.
said he's feeling good. So far he's looking physically very good. Doesn't have the pressure to carry the team anymore
Feel that's the case with SO many players right now. Wright, Cuddyer, Flores, TDA, Murphy, even somebody like Lagares. The pressure is completely off now. I have a hunch Duda is going to benefit from this too. He too often has tried to carry this team. Now he also will be one of the guys.
Martino Bartolo Colon will spend the next few weeks basically auditioning for a spot on the postseason roster. The team has not ruled out using him in a late-inning relief role, but is leaving open the possibility of excluding him entirely.
-There is active debate, and nowhere near agreement, on whether to move Noah Syndergaard to the bullpen. In internal discussions, some Mets people salivate over the notion of Syndergaard blowing 100 mph in the seventh inning.
Others worry about his lack of experience in that role, and are hesitant to move him from the rotation in September. With both Syndergaard and Matz, the Mets would want to do it soon, so they could gain experience pitching in relief.
-Hoping that Matz will start for them in October, the Mets are closely watching several lefties in their system, including Scott Rice, Dario Alvarez and Josh Smoker.
Yes, we understand that you might consider that list uninspiring. Asked on Thursday if it was realistic for a guy in Triple-A in late August to pitch in big postseason spots, Sandy Alderson said, “Why not?”
-The Mets are unlikely to trade for another reliever before Tuesday.
-The team is not inclined to move Jon Niese to the bullpen.
I would love to have him as a utility guy and insurance for Wright. But someone will pay him big bucks to be 2B and occasional DH. even if the Mets want him he will test the market

In the unlikely situation Murphy were offered the QO and accepted he's not going to be a utility player for 16+ million. He's your starting 2b.
since he has the least innings left and hasn't had TJS (maybe that's not really meaningful, but based on his size/strength/arm he seems like a guy whose arm is a little less delicate than the other starters).
It is incumbent on him to figure out how to be effective when it happens. That's all part of being a pro and he can't view it as an excuse if he pitched poorly.
Let Alvarez come up and take over EOF's spot next week.
Gilmartin has been excellent, Torres has been fine, Robles is emerging as a reliable 7th inning option and we have Verrett as a swingman. Just get EOF out of there and replace him with a reliable lefty and I think we have the groundwork for what should be a pretty solid bullpen going into October.
After that, depth, depth, depth. You can never be deep enough in the pen.
A while back I mentioned that as the most likely solution to his innings issue in the playoffs. One thought right now is to have him pitch out of the pen 1-2 times when they skip his turn to see how he deals with it. It solves multiple problems for the team...
agreed. Harvey as your #1 conceivably could throw 35-50 playoff innings. He needs to learn to deal with extra time. For such an incredible competitor and great player he does make a lot of excuses when he's off.
I don't think anyone's saying Harvey will use it as an excuse if he struggles and it's nothing to be concerned about even if he does. He's not going to get 10 days off between postseason starts if we make it. It'd be a non-issue.
He may well go out and dominate tonight. Who knows.

Arc,
He's previously complained about it on multiple occasions.
July 5 ""With the six-man and then the day off, throwing last Saturday and then this Saturday is tough," Harvey said. "We're all having to deal with it. It's not an excuse why things didn't go well today. I just have to do a better job of finding a way to get a rhythm throughout an extended period of rest like that.""
Back in May-
“It’s different,” Harvey said about pitching with extra rest. “We’ve all been going through it. Every single one of us has had an extra day here or there. Dealing with it is something you have to do. I don’t think I did a very good job of that. I think we’re all excited to go back to a five-day rotation. It is what it is.”
QO thing will be interesting to follow. If he finishes strong, he'll likely sign somewhere else instead of take the QO and we'll get a 1st. Worst case, if he's good enough to give the QO to and he takes it, we keep him for one more year in his prime and let Dilson rake in AAA for another year.

Focus and distractions - needs to rededicate to the GAME. This offseason is make or break for him in the organization.

verified AT ALL but someone I spoke to said he "heard" Nimmo was promoted to AAA because he and Lopez were clashing. No idea if true or not.

Sort of surprising given his rep for being a hard worker in the off-season. Has the talent. Hopefully Conforto passing him is a wakeup call
Thor's production was always A+. Pretty massive difference don't you think?

Admittedly never heard of Olivo until recently

Not with the 3 aces going at home I'm not :)
And though I still haven't gotten used to saying this yet.. I expect us to put runs on the board.
