Ok BBI, with the news that Berhe is likely headed to IR, the Giants will start the season with 3 safeties on IR that they had initially counted on to contribute. Right now, Meriweather and Miles appear to be locks to make the team, which speaks to the lack of depth at the position. Looking around the league, what teams do you think might have to let a safety go that could help the Giants.
After the Giants, the team I know the best would be the Bills, and they are loaded at safety. The starters will likely be Corey Graham and Aaron Williams (a good combo). After them, the principle reserves are Duke Williams and Bacarri Rambo (good backups that would probably start for the GMEN). The Bills probably have one more roster spot to spend at safety, and will select from the following.
- Kenny Ladler, 6'1" 209lbs age 23.
2-year undrafted rookie FA Safety from Vanderbilt. Saw time on the active roster last year after spending time on the Bill's practice squad.
- Jonathan Meeks, 6'0" 209lbs age 25
2-year Safety from Clemson, age 25. Has had a lot of injury time, but was a good prospect coming out of college.
According to draftinsider.com: Jonathan Meeks “is an athletic specimen who displayed improvement the past two seasons. He possesses the physical skills to play in a variety of defensive schemes at the next level and comes with a special teams mentality.”
- Wesley Miller, 5'9" 183lb rookie FA from UTEP, age 23
It looks like the competition is really between Ladler, Meeks, and maybe Duke Williams. If Meeks or Williams shakes lose, I would hope the Giants take a look. They would be an upgrade over Miles.
This thread is not limited to safety. Curious as to what other non-Giant camp battles you guys might be keeping an eye on. I know Andy Levitre is in a fight in Tennessee, and he would be a great addition depth wise, but I think he is pretty much a LG or C.
I think we can count on that
We need lots due to injury whether OL, secondary, or LB.
Any potential cap cut guys that were kept, made it to camp but are on the bubble/dumped next Tuesday we should dive in for, and have a JPP thank you thread.
I'd be happy with pretty much anyone, but I'm especially glad to hear about guys like the ones you posted possibly being available.
Is Dahl really worth a damn? I don't remember him doing all that much for the Giants. I think he started one game in 2007 and wound up tearing an ACL?
He has all the attributes TC likes.
BUT...if you REALLY want to solidify the Safety position target Clemson's Jayron Kearse (yes, that family) playing as a junior this year (don't see him staying for a 4th year) and seen by some as the best collegiate safety this year. At 6'4', 210# he is compared to Cam Chancellor.
Put him back there with Collins and the linebackers can focus their attention forward (as Spags likes) and not worry about what's going on behind them.
As a previous poster pointed out, there are a lot of teams hurting in the secondary and, therefore, there is no guarantee that the Giants will automatically get their choice. The trade before a cut is a good vehicle, and makes sense.
But we know its not going to happen.
