NFT: Switching to Direct TV

Gman11 : 8/28/2015 7:19 pm
I've been seriously considering switching from cable to Direct TV, mainly to get the Sunday Ticket. The package that I would get would cost slightly less than what I'm paying now, but the difference is negligible.

Does Direct TV go out often during thunderstorms? That's one thing that I'm afraid of.

The other question is with internet. I also have Time Warner internet. If I drop cable should I keep my internet with them or go with something else?

BTW, I'm in North Carolina so what is available here might be different than in NYC.

If you have the dish mounted and pointed correctly and have a clear view of the sky, garden variety storms shouldn't be a problem. But heavy thunder or even heavy downpours or heavy snow could degrade or cut out your picture.
I would do it

Ive been on satellite since '95. First was C-band(big dish) with sunday ticket. Was only an issue with switching satelites for different shows(24 channels on each sat) and with 2 TV's at the time it caused some viewing problems.

2nd was dish network(no sunday ticket, my fault)for 2 years, then we had 4 TV's and no programming conflicts again.

Then went to directv(sunday ticket). Now we have 4 active TV's, 2 more optional, whole house dvr with 3 TV's having that capability, I can tape 9 shows at once and only have to watch 2.

I live on the continental divide in Colorado. Major snow storms, heavy thunderstorms throughout the year. I only get very infrequent signal loss due to weather, hell I have more problems with power outages. Probably maybe a total 10 days with some signal issues and that's not even on all channels, included in that is when the sending signal goes down(nothing you can do there). I average about 5-6 power outages during the fall/winter, so depending upon time and duration, I lose all then.

I remember North Carolina(research triangle area) having some pretty big thunderstorms but werent they mostly in the summer?

If your signal setup is good and you get a good signal strength, I wouldn't really expect too many issues.
My signal goes out twice a year
SimpleMan : 8/28/2015 8:06 pm : link
max. When it does go out, it is only for 10 mins or so.
I have directv
antdog24 : 8/28/2015 8:44 pm : link
but it still ticks me off that they still charge an extra $10 a month for high def channels. In this day and age standard definition programming shouldn't even be an option.
I had DirecTV for around 15
pjcas18 : 8/28/2015 8:50 pm : link
years and I'd say I lost signal 10 times in those 15 years.

I still have it, but only for Sunday Ticket so I don't know if it goes out unless it's on a Sunday during football season.

if I lived in NYC or NJ or somewhere that had the Giants games every week, I'd probably only have FiOS, otherwise without hesitation I'd go with DirecTV.

Only knock on them is it's expensive, but good customer service, good quality and technologically they're as good or better than the other options.

I just moved and signed up for TWC... they also charge you for HD channels.
The HD channels can go out during bad storms.

However, you can just switch to the standard def channel until the storm passes.
Thanks for the info

An out if town Giants fan and want to see every Giants game it s a great deal. I have it and am grateful for the package. I also take advantage by watching all other games.

I m a busy person but on Sundays during football season become a couch potato
We've had DTV for almost 20 years

living in the south, we do tend to get more outages for storms. In fact, it's kind of a warning system when the sat goes out, I know it's going to rain. I'd say most of the time it's a few minutes, but some outages can last for awhile. It's mostly in the summer. We have DTV for tv and Charter cable for internet.

Agree with Jim. I like in MI, the snow doesn't usually affect the signal, but heavy thunderstorms sure do.
The climate where I live -
short lease : 8/29/2015 10:28 am : link
is extremely mild and we are going through multiple years of little rain fall (northern California).

Having said that - I don't remember EVER losing the satellite signal during a rain storm. And, I have had the dish for over 20 years.
can you watch NFL package games online

If you get sunday ticket max, yes.
Just wondering
Gman11 : 8/29/2015 1:55 pm : link
Sunday ticket comes free for the first year.

For renewals, how much more is it for Max than regular Sunday Ticket?

There isn't information about this on the Directv web site.
the max upgrade
MookGiants : 8/29/2015 2:01 pm : link
is 102 + tax.
Also, I've been reading reviews of
Gman11 : 8/29/2015 2:08 pm : link
the mobile app and most of them are not good.
$100 is too much for me for
Gman11 : 8/29/2015 2:09 pm : link
something that might happen once or twice a season.
Weather is not an issue for me
MarshallOnMontana : 8/29/2015 2:53 pm : link
I've had directv at various different places since 2002, and I can count on one hand the number of times the signal went out for more than 10 minutes. Very rarely I may have interference or an outage last a matter of moments, but not any longer than that.
I'm really giving it serious consideration
Gman11 : 8/29/2015 3:20 pm : link
and, if I do it, I can then buy the NHL Center Ice package too and really piss off the wife.
