Kaplan MMQB: Bad Play Proven in a Court of Law, Helium-Filled Footballs and Other Oddities from the SI Archives
"1. I think a 1956 issue of SI illuminated what has to be one of the greatest football-related courtroom scenes ever. The anecdote: “A onetime halfback named Joe Pertuzzo told the jury that the Giants started him in a preseason game with Los Angeles, back in 1954, then dropped him because he suffered a broken thumb in the game; Joe wanted $6,000. No, indeed, the Giants said; Joe just wasn’t good enough for the Giants. In a darkened courtroom, Coach Jim Lee Howell and Halfback Petruzzo reviewed film for the jury.
Howell: See, the ball carrier comes through…. He should have been duck soup for Petruzzo.
Petruzzo: Watch the next play and see if I didn’t take care of the outside. I turned the play in.
Howell: You didn’t make the tackle….On this play you can see Joe come in, but he slips…
Petruzzo: A lot of good players slip, Coach.
Howell: Good players don’t slip, Joe boy.
The jury voted for Howell.”

True, except at the time, the consensus here(I think) and more importantly with the Giants, he wasn't worth the monies he wanted..Especially after it appeared that he lost a step last year..And, like most here, I was a Rolle man
Do you recall what his contract with the Bears was? How much guaranteed?
THAT was not the issue..Paying him what he wanted was the issue..His play did not merit it imo..They made the correct financial call I believe..
He may have found new life under Spags scheme. He could have an extension of spags on the field. The guy never missed practice and lead the locker room. Invaluable IMO.. I think he would do well in Spags defense... Rolle was out of position often covering as slot corner.
Beckham? Eli? Who need them? We can be 6-10 without them, right?
Beckham? Eli? Who need them? We can be 6-10 without them, right?
each player has a diff value and importance, rolle was not a diff maker or a plyer that would have the impact that would change the w/L record.
We could have kept him. They let him go without a decent backup. They choose to sign Casillas and Harris with the cash that could have been used for a very good & versatile S.
Rolls can still play. He didn't look like a slow player last year. He's still move and get to where he needs to be. I expect him to have a couple of good years in CHI while we look for a street FA to start.
Beckham? Eli? Who need them? We can be 6-10 without them, right?
I hear you brother. I fucking hate that line and always have. You wanna stay lousy keep getting rid of the good players. Just because you lost with a guy doesn't mean you can't win with him if the roster is fixed around that player.
Rolle most definitely lost a step but he woule have helped the run defense. Oh well...

not really.more mouth then prod.
Athletically, even at this stage, he's a better athlete than anything we had at S in 2015. He has more speed/quickness than any other S on the roster plus he has exp and recognition skills. He would have helped the pass D.
If were going with Collins at one S we need a player like Rolle out there too. I was hoping Jackson could have been that guy but going into the preseason with Jackson/Thompson as your only cover types at S was a mistake.
Not only did they blow it with Rolle but they may have let another option go with Thurmond. He'll be the starting S in PHI this year.
[quote] can't do all of the things he did 5 years ago but this is a guy who we were able to put in just about any position on pass D. He didn't lose it all.

now thurmond i agree with, should have brought him back.
And BB '56... .Thurmond was oft injured coming to NY and let coming off a season missing 14 games. :P
I can't blame them either for wanting to move on.
