and still adjusting to a new defense. He'll likely have a bigger impact on ST anyway unless injuries happen. Maybe we should wait until some regular season games are played before questioning his impact.
signings by JR. What had Casillas done to deserve that contract? Reminded me of last year's O'Brien Schofiel signing (fortunately O'Brien Schofiel couldn't pass the physical)
Steve flip , so because you didn't observe any stand out ST
im a big fan of harris. Tough player can play slot and the outside. Special team player. Good returner. No complaints and oh yea it takes beckham off return duties
The total value of a contract literally does not matter.
TE but that doesn't stop me from commenting on what I see, what I read from the beat writers and what players' contracts are.
So, Casillas is hurt, hasn't played in the last 2 pre-season games, when he played against the Bengals IIRC he didn't have any tackles and the beat writers hardly ever commented favorably on his practices.
So, let's look at his contract: 3 years, $2.975M guaranteed, $995K in 2015 and $2.25M in 2016.
For that contract we could have signed ALL of the following for one year and in Brinkley's case for 2 years:
Danny Lansanah 1 year $660K and -0- guaranteed
Jason Trusnik 1 year $950K and -0- guaranteed
Philip Wheeler. 1 year $870K and -0- guaranteed
Jasper Brinkley. 2 years $4.5M and $2M guarantee
All in all, total one year cost is $4.73M but only $2M guaranteed.vs. Casillas' one year cost of $975K but $2.975M guaranteed.
So, we could have brought all of those other LBs in for 2015 with less guaranteed money than Casillas.
IMO at least one or two of them would have made the 53 man roster.
There are players every year that are not retained - it is called a salary cap. The fact is he played for Belichik and he played well. You want to gloss it over with your usual negative BS go ahead. The best coach in the league got him to play in meaningful minutes after trading for him.
BB is not just the coach, but the GM....he was not going to pay a part time player 3M, like the Giants were...is that too hard for your brain to understand?
Still early but the Casillas signing was a bit of a head scratcher
Here is the key. It just seems to me this is the type of player you should be drafting and developing not spending critical free agent cap dollars on.
He Looks to be a coverage LB and imo has been around enough to know what you're getting. The guaranteed money wasn't huge I'm just not sure he's going to be worth it. Thomas was a better get of a younger player with upside as a starter. If Casillas can improve our play against TE's he'll represent an upgrade on the likes of JWill and Paysinger.
Dwayne Harris' contract is a head scratcher. It pays him in the top 10% of all WRs.
His contract provides as follows:
5 years $17.5M and $7.1 M guaranteed
$975K in 2015 $2.975 in 2016 and 2017 and $3.25 in 2018 and 2019.
I realize that coming into 2015 our STs were average at best but IMO not our biggest problem. IMO Safety was the biggest problem because we had no experience, pass rush was a big problem and the interior DL couldn't stop the run.
Instead of Harris' contract we could have done the following contracts at Safety and DT:
Tashaun Gipson 1 year $2.4M and -0- guaranteed
Mike Adams 2 years $4.25M and $1.2M guaranteed
Darian Stewart. 2 years $4.25M and $2.25 guaranteed
Vance Walker. 2 years $5M and $1.5m guaranteed
Tom Johnson. 3 years $7M and $2.25 guaranteed
So, that's a total of $22.9M, which is much higher than Harris' $17.5M, but the guaranteed money is $7.2M, which is awfully close to Haris' guaranteed money of $7.1M. For all of those contracts, you bring in 3 experienced Safeties and 2 pass-rushing DTs.
Of course, you'd have to rely on someone like Preston Parker to handle punts and hope to find someone to handle KRs, like Hunt. Maybe from a ST standpoint, you'd be better off with Harris but you may otherwise have been much better at Safety and pass-rushing DT.
Keep hearing how the Giants don't follow a template
He could easily have been a starting LB for the Pats this year. Like every team, the Pats go in evaluating what their needs are and then prioritize. in terms of what they needed to do, he was replaceable. Resigning their S and trying to find CB's and a NT were higher priorities.
It still does not take away the fact the Belichik played him in critical junctures.
He is a coverage LB who is very fast and can run with TE and actually has a clue while on the field
agreed Steve F. and i like harris. just like i was OK with taking a gamble on walton at C last year. but we give these guys too much $$$. who was giving Thomas, Casillas or Harris this kind of cash???? they are journeymen
further, our punt coverage hasn't been because we suck at gunner. our punt coverage is on weatherford IMO. he has stunk for a couple years now and that blow-up with Quinn late last year was likely just reaching boiling point
we will spend a bunch of $$$ on harris and then punt the ball straight down the middle, or to the left when it should go right. and it won't matter if we have Reyna Thompson and David Tyree
RE: Rory: it's been a very long time since I played
TE but that doesn't stop me from commenting on what I see, what I read from the beat writers and what players' contracts are.

Of those 4 , Casillas is the better player. FA is about filling holes quickly , an filling holes means over paying for talent. Not sure why you have a microscope on him after 3 pre-season games ...be patient

Contract - ( New Window )
TOP 20%!!! Does anyone else besides Reese think that Casillas' level of play is in the top 20%? He's not even in top 3 of Giants LBs.
Always helps to understand how these things work
Funny how Belichik traded for him last October and he played a lot of for them at he end of the year
If Belichik trusts him and got him to play, it is more of an indictment on our coaching staff than Reese
We were willing to sign McCourty to the highest safety contract......
Now....figure out how to prevent injuries.....I have a hard crusifying Reese due to the injuries we get hit with every year
Funny how Belichik traded for him last October and he played a lot of for them at he end of the year

Too bad we don't have Bill to coach him up here.
Always helps to understand how these things work
When will people understand that with the exception of franchise QBs, only the guaranteed money is what matters.
Unless Harris has the ability to teleport as a gunner, it looks like Hunt can do the same job Harris does but obviously much cheaper.
im a big fan of harris. Tough player can play slot and the outside. Special team player. Good returner. No complaints and oh yea it takes beckham off return duties

Belichick didn't re-sign him.
Because dollar Bill was not going to give him 3M?
