My game observations

YANKEE28 : 8/30/2015 10:03 am
The tradition of Zak DeOssie being the first Giant out on the field and promptly jumping over the kneeling cameraman continues

A young girl about 10 years old performed as outstanding a rendition of the National Anthem as you will ever hear. Impressive

On the first play, the opening kickoff, Geremy Davis was the Giants player furthest to the right and certainly had outside contain responsibilities. He pushed inside and promptly let the Jets returner get to the outside for another 15 yards. Later, following the Giants first TD, he would start too early, and was offside and penalized on the kickoff.

John Jerry started at RG, but after 2 series, the remainder of the game was a rotation of Jerry and Schwartz at RG. No Giants player took any snaps at RG except those 2 right to the final gun.

Schwartz was beaten badly by former Giants DT Leger Douzable on his first snap, but settled down and I actually thought played quite well. He had several key blocks on the Giants first TD drive

My observation- Very clear that the Giants running attack was much better when Schwartz was in and would digress when Jerry would return

The Giants had a similar rotation (and similar result) at DT. The starter (like Jerry) was Marcus Kuhn and the rotation player was Kenrick Ellis. Kuhn (other than blocking an extra point) did very little. Ellis, especially when paired with Hankins, impressed. When it got to the 2nd half Ellis remained part of the rotation with other backups. I don’t recall Kuhn playing in the 2nd half

Ereck Flowers played well. The Jets are a 3-4 team and Flowers spent most of the night up against LB Trevor Reilly. Flowers is about 100 pounds bigger and it was just a mismatch throughout. Reilly is more of a speed rusher, but Flowers had no problems. Flowers played the entire first half. His replacement was Emmett Cleary, who took every LT snap in the 2nd half.

Pugh’s play was uneven. He was badly beaten by Douzable for an early sack of Eli, and was a frustrating mix of solid blocks and missed blocks. Not his best game.

While I must say that I like the 2015 version of C Dallas Reynolds better than the 2014 version (he is clearly bigger and stronger), he is still just an average player. The Jets backup center (Dalton Freeman) is clearly better than Reynolds or Brett Jones, the Giants 2 who played C in this game.

I thought Marshall Newhouse had a good effective game. He played the entire first half and I don’t recall any blown plays. Newhouse was replaced in the 2nd half by Bobby Hart, who played until he was injured, when he was replaced by Donnelly, who stayed at RT the remainder of the game. When Hart was in, his opponent was often LB Trevor Reilly, who played 3 quarters for the Jets. Hart (like Flowers much larger than Reilly) also had good success.

Adam Gettis played LG for Pugh in the 2nd half. Giants fans should take notice that Bamiro and Eric Herman did not get in for a snap the whole game.

Another observation- while I like the intensity of both Gettis and Jones, these guys are clearly “tiny” in the trenches on a pro football field. You can get away with tiny with an explosive running back or a tough slot receiver, but I just don’t think tiny works along the lines in the NFL, regardless of toughness or desire.

The Giants best special teams player this preseason is Josh Gordy. Hands down. Too bad he was injured in the 2nd half. Hope it is not serious.

With under 3 minutes to go in the game DT Dominique Hamilton entered for his first snaps. This surprised me as I thought he looked solid in the two practices I attended. Clearly not a good sign for Hamilton making the roster.

Newest Giant LB Ashlee Palmer had a similar (but worse) experience. He entered the game at the 2 minute warning in the 4th quarter. After breaking the huddle, in came a 3rd safety (Cooper Taylor) and off went Palmer. Palmer would not return and had no snaps.

The 3 Giants that stood out for me the most on Defense- Kennard, Odighizuwa, and DRC

I really love Orleans Darkwa. Had 1 great block on a KO return to spring Harris, and just so smooth running the ball and always getting that extra yard or 2. I actually like Darkwa over Williams.

LB Devin Unga continues to impress. Took more snaps with the first team. I have to believe he has made the roster, as he had snaps in all 4 quarters and reacts well and makes plays.

Final sidenote- Jets OG Willie Colon is probably the dirtiest player in the NFL. He actually got flagged at least once.
Nice write up.

Calling Pugh's play last night 'uneven' is generous.

Yankee...I'm pretty sure Kuhn played in the second half but I'll have to re-watch the game.

I think uneven is accurate. At times, such as during the TD drive, he showed top level, something to be excited for the left side. At other times, he showed his inexperience. I don't think its fair to just shit on his whole performance. But that's BBI...
Excellent Summary

I didn't shit all over his whole performance, but I saw a lot more negative plays than great ones. But that's BBI.

Great break down. Easy to read and digest. I wasn't able to see the broadcast last night because my cable provider does not carry that station out of NewYork.

I followed the running game discussion and it sounded like an abysmal showing. Then to read the Post and Daily News accounts one would conclude this is going to be a very bad team with no chance to compete for a playoff spot.

I agree with most that yes this is preseason and championships are not won in preseason. But boy oh boy there doesn't seem to be a lot of positive anything coming out of this camp leading up to the start of the regular season.

How do you see this team? Is doom and gloom right around the corner? Let's be real. Other then Odell Beckham who on either side of the football do teams have to worry about. I think Jerry Reese may be hanging on by a thread because it does not look very encouraging even if it is preseason.

Yeah, I think he was in during the second half. Great write up YANKEE28. Thanks.
The defense in general is a big concern

Ok Bold, break it down for us. How many snaps did you rate good vs. bad?

I don't think its coincidence that Richburg was out and Pugh struggled. I think Dallas Renolds was a good part of that problem.
a few other observations
YANKEE28 : 8/30/2015 11:16 am : link
the speed of Nassib's ball is really impressive, especially on throws to the outside. There is no doubt he has an NFL arm. Nassib also has great command of the huddle and looks very comfortable. It was a disappointing night, but you have to be impressed with the improvements Nassib continues to make.

The blocking by TE Larry Donnell is nothing short of maddening. I really hoped for improvement in that area, but I didn't see any.

I don't recall Fells playing until the 2nd half. The Giants seemed to be giving plenty of looks to Cunningham, who is very athletic and has great hands. Cunningham lacks the mass of either Donnell or Robinson, but I really didn't see enough of his blocking skills to comment.
pugh seems like JAG

we will see, hope i am wrong.
Pugh
averagejoe : 8/30/2015 12:34 pm : link
stunk. Yeah, I went there. Not sure what has happened to him but he sure does not look like a first rounder anymore. Robinson has to get cut. The experiment with him is over. Another wasted pick. Both teams were unimpressive.

I sure wished Eli had hit Beckham behind Revis for that easy TD to shut Jet fans up. He had the whole field to use and he threw it out of bounds. An easy throw he did not make.

Flowers looked good and I think generally the OL is improved so Giants should be able to score. With no safeties and no pass rush the defense is a major concern.

Will get any benefit of the doubt if it is close because he was a higher draft choice and the other guy wasn't even drafted. That is usually the way it works. It makes no sense to me either, but it is reality for the most part.
Thanks for the write up

A few observations watching on TV. What we're watching is just a long painful death spiral continuation from mid 2012. For the "don't worry it's just pre season" crowd I get the games don't count. But when they do I think the Giants will be done by mid season for the 3rd year in a row.

Kuhn did play some in the 2nd half.

Pugh was so bad last night that it was concerning even though it's a game that doesn't count.

Newhouse gets over powered at RT. Pugh while below average was better at RT than Newhouse.

The Giants have gone mad with playing people "the coaches are comfortable with". Kuhn is laughable at DT, Jenkins is horrible at DE. Parker is a scrub. There are more on that list. As you mentioned the backup guards are midgets. One of the best things a new coaching staff could bring if they're allowed is a culling of the BU, Syracuse, captains fair haired children herd who have no business being in the NFL.

I think Coughlin has gone soft and completely lost his edge. He has no answers and the Giants play at half speed of every other team I watch. There's zero aggression on either side of the ball. The Giants are never dictating they're always reacting on both lines.

I think they're going to struggle to match last years win total. If that's the case I hope John Mara sweeps the whole thing clean, all the coaches, the GM and scouting staff, including his brother and hires his own version of George Young to rebuild from the ground up. This generation of Mara's has gotten away from the George Young structure and they've made a mess. The owners need to own not pick the players.
Great post.

Good thread.

What a mess.
