"My expectations are he's going to get three hits and catch every ball that's hit to him." --Terry Collins on Uribe playing second

Adam Rubin
Terry Collins said Juan Uribe doesn't like to play first base, and wanted to get him at the lineup.

What an ugly fucking lineup

Matz probably replaces Syndergaard in the rotation because Thor is near an innings cap
Parnell

Parnell pitching off the mound under the watch of Dan Warthen, with a bullpen catcher taking swings. Seems like a simulated outing.

Trying to avoid a sweep in a playoff race?
PhiPsi125 : 8/30/2015 11:46 am : link
Let's rest three of your best starters and play Uribe at a position he's only played once since 2011. That's a TC special right there.

Hey, maybe it's just dumb enough to work.

So while Mets need to make 40-man roster move for Reed by Monday, they won't have to demote a player. Can just add Reed when rosters expand.

For Addison Reed to be playoff-eligible, he only has to be added to the 40-man roster by 8/31. He doesn't have to report until 9/1.

Bobby Parnell threw live batting practice today. Expects to be activated Tuesday.

What are the opinions on Addison Reed?
Eric on Li : 8/30/2015 12:09 pm : link
Doesn't sound like we gave up much, he's had experience closing, and he has good numbers since the AS break but has anyone seen any reports on his stuff or even old scouting reports? Did that claim on the other lefty go through also?

2012, 13, 14 ... Reed had 29, 40, 32 saves for the White Sox and Dbacks. But also 18 total blown saves. But again, Mets aren't looking for a closer at this point.

Ken Rosenthal
Heard same as @MarcCarig: #Mets unlikely to get Rzepzcynski despite being awarded claim. Reason unclear, but he is only LH in #Padres pen.

Trading Rzepczynski would save #Padres less than $500K. Sometimes teams prefer to play it out rather than take back a meager return.

Addison Reed's velocity is down a tick or two. He was dialing it up to around 97 a couple years ago. His max velocity is around 95 now, which of course is still more than enough. Especially with an improved splitter.

MarshallOnMontana : 8/30/2015 2:03 pm : link
Tempted to bandwagon jump for the stretch run. 3 questions....

1) who do the mets consider their ace right now, Degrom or Harvey? I. Other words, who starts game 1 of a series if they can manipulate the rotation
2) I notice Matt Harvey's strike outs are down from past years doing a little research. Did his surgery take anything away from him? Is he compromised in any way from his injury?
3) I see the kid pitching today is 22 and has great stats. Is syndergaard considered a potential ace level prospect?
4) These are their big 3 going forward I assume right? Do they have a stud in the minors pitching wise?
5) do they have a stud position player in the minors?
3 questions turned into 5
MarshallOnMontana : 8/30/2015 2:04 pm : link
Thanks in advance for any input
Before his injury, Matz showed signs of being in the same league

as the other three. And then, we'll have Wheeler coming back.
MOM
ZGiants98 : 8/30/2015 2:11 pm : link
1.) Take your pick. deGrom is probably the better pitcher by a hair but Harvey starts game 1 in my book.

2.) Harvey's Ks are a bit down but he himself has said he only just got the feel for his slider back a few weeks ago. Its a Tommy John thing.

3.) Syndergaard(Thor) is an absolute stud and might be the best of the bunch within a year.

4.) Steven Matz is equally exciting and will be back in about a week. A power lefty from the left side with ACE potential. Zack Wheeler will also be back next year.

5.) We are LOADED in position player prospects. Conforto isn't playing today but is already on the team. He's our future LF and likely an all-star within a couple years.. Nimmo, Cecchini, Herrera, Plawecki, Rosario, Smith are players we are excited about on the way.

Welcome back!

They might skip him a couple times in September so he can pitch in the postseason or he might be used in the pen in the playoffs. Sandy said yesterday he doesn't want Matz or Syndergaard in the pen and even said the postseason would be "unlikely".

They're going to need to skip him a couple times to keep within the vicinity where it's possible for him to be in the playoff rotation. The more likely scenario with Matz close to returning is that Matz rejoins the rotation and winds up part of the playoff 4 which would then be he deGrom, Harvey and Niese with Syndergaard going to the pen.

Still tentative but I think that's probably what we're looking at.

And boy.. I saw that HR coming. The bats better wake up soon otherwise we're going to get swept here.

Uribe is exactly
ZGiants98 : 8/30/2015 4:42 pm : link
the kind of bat you want coming off the bench in the playoffs. Johnson's been better over the last few games also. I'd feel like we had a shot with either of these guys. Considering one of Cuddyer/Conforto will also be on the bench depending on the game our bench will unreal.

His ba is low, but he's hit 5 hr's and 5 doubles before today. I'm glad he can play second. He's not going to get many starts at third as long as Wright is healthy.

#Mets have optioned Logan Verrett to Las Vegas to make room for Reed. He should be back in 10 days with another spot start on the horizon.

Hopefully this series
pjcas18 : 8/30/2015 5:14 pm : link
is a little lesson for Mets fans. I know the lineup wasn't at full strength maybe because it wasn't playoffs, but basically you saw the top 3 Mets pitchers start against the last place team in the AL East (by a lot) and barely eke out 1 win.

playoff teams will be better than this, that should offset any comments about Wright sitting or Cespedes sitting or Harvey only going 6 when he could have been pushed another inning.

Hopefully Reed helps plug the hole in the bullpen but the offense also needs to be better too or the Mets success won't be as much as it should or could be this year.

Any team can have a bad series
ZGiants98 : 8/30/2015 5:18 pm : link
The Red Sox have been playing well for the last month and have one of the top offenses in baseball since the all-star break. Combine that with some good young starting pitching and its not surprising this was a battle. If our pen hadn't been so burnt up we likely win Friday and take 2 of 3 anyway.

The Rockies beat the Pirates today 5-0. Should Pirates fans be concerned? It happens.

The concerns with the Mets were on display in the Red Sox series.

I don't think overall it was a bad series. Harvey, deGrom and Thor all pitched well. Like you'd expect.

I'm not antagonizing you, just saying this team has weaknesses and it's not a flawless team. In a series like this one the Mets should not be dominated by the opposing starters.

Except, the Pirates didn't have a bad series. The Pirates were on a four game win streak and had already taken the first two games against the Rockies before dropping the last game today. Why would Pirates fans be worried? That's probably the worst example you could have used.

There's no such thing as a flawless team. The Pirates have flaws, the Dodgers have flaws, and the Cardinals have flaws. Kelly has been undefeated for over a month. Layne has been pitching well too. And who said the Mets are winning the World Series anyway? I think we are talented as anyone, especially when healthy, but Ive also said I could easily see us wiped out in the first round. Facing Kershaw and Greinke in round one is not going to be a picnic. But once we have our foot in the door, who knows what happens.
Anyway, back to baseball...
PhiPsi125 : 8/30/2015 5:54 pm : link
The Red Sox pitchers weren't any great shakes. Kelly was okay but the other two were not good. They all were hitable. We just didn't hit. It happens. Hopefully they wake up because Washington isn't going away. I'm interested to see how they do against The Cards. That should tell us something.
Kelly had three good starts against three bad teams before

And the Mets just won seven games on the road before Friday's game. What's your point?

I'm not going to bang on them too hard for losing two in a row. Sox have been playing good ball lately. Sucks they lost two winnable games. But shit happens sometimes...

Oh geezus I quickly looked at the box scores and saw that the best team in baseball since early May was dominated by the Rockies today. Thats a bad example? Your trying to tell me the Pirates were playing well prior so it doesn't matter? The Mets are 8-2 in their last ten games. I was just saying better teams lose to lesser teams every day. How about the Rays beating the Royals today? That work?
Hey, listen, I'm not getting nuts about it. The Pirates and Royals are
PhiPsi125 : 8/30/2015 6:05 pm : link
two of the best teams in baseball that have been doing its the last few seasons. The last two big moments in mets history were both collapses. And I don't have a feeling that the Nats will make it easy. Sorry I don't share your rosy optimism.

I was simply pointing out that a team on verge of being swept versus a team looking to sweep was probably a poor comparison. The Royals might be a better example but they are 13 games up so I doubt their fans are concerned about anything.
Eh.
ZGiants98 : 8/30/2015 6:11 pm : link
If the Phillies or Marlins are threatening to sweep this week Ill be on board with what your saying more but the Red Sox are a good young team thats ben playing good ball and who also just happens to have one of the best offenses in the game.

My rosy optimism? I think we are better than the Nats and likely win the division. No different than Dan, Arc, and many others have said. I also said we could lose in the first round so not sure where my rosy optimism exceeds the majority of people here.
Tomorrow we get
ZGiants98 : 8/30/2015 6:17 pm : link
a nice addition to the pen. Tuesday we get an influx of players to provide much needed rest to this roster. Just after that, we should be getting Duda and Matz back. We play the Phillies and the Nats play the Cards. Next week we take matters into our own hands against the Nats themselves. I feel pretty confident we can take 2 of 3 in that series and hammer the nail in the coffin then. We'll see but we are set up pretty nicely here.
Well, I wouldn't exactly say that's the majority here. I've seen you,
PhiPsi125 : 8/30/2015 6:31 pm : link
Dan, Arc, and HH say that you all aren't concerned about the Nats at all. And that's completely fine. I think the far majority of fans are still concerned about the Nationals. They have won 96 and 98 games two of the last three years and they have the talent to go on a run. I've enjoyed the hell out of this race but not without trepidation. I've learned my lesson to not count my chickens too early. It's okay to have differing opinions. It's America, after all, lol.

And no offense on the rosy optimism comment. It just kinda your thing :)
It's very good to see Conforto becoming the player we all hoped
Ira : 8/30/2015 6:31 pm : link
he would be when he was drafted. It doesn't seem to have taken him very long. His OPS is .860 and the arrow is pointed up.

All good Phi
ZGiants98 : 8/30/2015 6:35 pm : link
And sure it can happen. My confidence stems from our roster and I genuinely feel it s abetter one than the Nats. I think some people still feel the Mets are over-performing and the Nats are underperforming and I no longer feel thats the case. Could we choke it away? Sure. Of course we could.
It's less about the mets over performing and more about the Nats
PhiPsi125 : 8/30/2015 6:42 pm : link
just going on a run to end the season. They have had a knack for doing that and they have the talent to do it. I don't think the mets are overachieving right now. They are beating up on the teams they should be. But I also think our BP has hit a bump. And some of our younger pitchers are tiring. But all teams run into that. I've just got that "look over your shoulder" feeling right now...but that's baseball, right?
Yup.
ZGiants98 : 8/30/2015 7:08 pm : link
And after 2007-2008 who can blame you? And anyone here who tells you they aren't looking at what the Nats are doing is lying. We are all scoreboard watching every day. Im confident we are the better team but that doesn't mean I am not watching the Nats closely as well.
Scoreboard watching in the stretch run is a baseball tradition
Torrag : 8/30/2015 7:12 pm : link
We're all keeping one eye on the Nats.

The Mets were on a stretch where they were hitting something like .328 with RISP over several weeks. That isn't sustainable. The Red Sox series was the correction.
Division is going to come down to Mets-Nats series
Vanzetti : 8/30/2015 9:09 pm : link
Fortunately, for the Mets they only likely need to split, whereas Nats might need to win 5 out of 6

I think Rubin was naming the position players. Dario Alvarez, for one, would almost assuredly be up as well.
