this guy started for us last year and he didn't even make first cuts.

at work here. It is amazing how that construction has seeped through every layer of analytic thought. If Walton had made the Dolphins, say became their starting C, that means Coughlin & Flaherty are 2 assholes who don't know how to coach. He gets cut: no problema, Coughlin & Flaherty are 2 assholes for playing Walton last year. As for the Baron Von Richburg, he has proven without doubt that he was ready to start last season and is durable and can be trusted with the line calls for the Giants mobile QB and all that.....right?
shocker...

I don't quite understand this complaint. Walton isn't on the Giants anymore, and nobody ever thought he was a long-term answer at center.

On the contrary, Richburg was drafted to be the long-term answer at center, and Walton was a stop-gap while Richburg learned the offensive line schemes. The Giants didn't want a rookie making the line calls, and I can't really blame them for that. Everybody complains that the line isn't protecting Eli enough, but with a rookie making the calls, it would have been a lot worse.

I think they hoped Walton would play better, but that doesn't mean they're amateurs. Some pickups work, some don't. Cruz worked. Darkwa seems to be working. Donnell worked pretty well. Rolle and Pierce and Boothe all worked. DRC's been a good pickup. We all know the guys who didn't work out. No team hits on 100% of its pickups. Remember that Seattle gave Matt Flynn a big contract the same year they drafted Russell Wilson.

Every GM cuts players who go on to make contributions to other teams. Every GM picks up players who contribute after they were cut from other teams. And, every GM drafts players, including high picks, who turn out to be busts.
Walton at guard?

J.D. Walton wasn't kept by the OL-poor Washington Redskins. That raised a red flag with many on BBI from the start. Same with Charles Brown with the Saints and John Jerry with the Dolphins.

Those teams dumped those players because they sucked. We signed them to compete for starting jobs.
Front office has done a lousy job lately

It's not even debatable.
Am I missing something here..?
Modus Operandi : 8/30/2015 10:46 pm : link
We let a stop-gap OL walk, and he gets cut by another team. How is this alarming or an indictment of anyone other than Walton?
Yes, the Charles James who is a RB in HOU now was our Charles James.
arcarsenal : 8/30/2015 10:47 pm : link
He was a DB here in 2013.

I haven't seen much of Hard Knocks but apparently he's been pretty noticeable on the show and has made a name for himself on it.
Just an absolutely horrible signing last year...
sb from NYT Forum : 8/30/2015 10:53 pm : link
...and that is without hindsight. The guy hadn't played in nearly 2 years and Reese threw $3 million at him. The guy should have been given no more than a rookie minimum.

Antrel Rolle was pretty upset when the Giants cut Charles James.

Cameron Wake wasn't good enough to stay in the NFL when he was with the Giants.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Every team can say they have guys as starters who may not have worked elsewhere.
Either have it one way...
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/31/2015 8:42 am : link
or the other, but not both. Historically, at least recently, there aren't many Giants who leave here and go on to have great years. Most people point that to good coaching because they have their best years in blue. Now, when a poor player gets cut here and then gets cut elsewhere, it is an indictment on the FO and the coaches?

Not sure I follow.
And thats been my beef with some of our signings lately.
Curtis in VA : 8/31/2015 8:47 am : link
Why sign someone like Newhouse or Brown or Walton to step onto the field for your team when its obvious they are going to hurt you. Even as depth. Some players are just so bad that they shouldn't make your final 53 and if they do - that should tell you something.

And yeah, Charles James will be in the league for a while. Bad decision to let him go, as well as Antrel Rolle. And that's not hindsight. I felt that way at the time.
If Charles James..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/31/2015 8:48 am : link
ends up being in this league for a long time as a RB, that cannot be the fault of the Giants.

It would be like saying if Terrelle Pryor becomes a great WR that every team who cut him made a poor decision.

Thats true, and he wouldn't make the team here as a RB anyway. But he was playing well as a corner.
They sign those guys because, rightly or wrongly,
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/31/2015 8:54 am : link
they believe they can coach them up enough to turn them into useful parts.

There was a time when we could do that.

Led the NFL in debilitating injuries BY FAR, "past two years?"
Chris Mara Senior Vice President of Player Evaluation since 2011

His supposed area of expertise is scouting NFL free agents. The one year deals with NFL vets taking over 1/2 the roster started about that time. This is not Mark Ross. Now it's obvious that the poor drafting run by Mark Ross opened up the roster for all the horrible NFL vet free agents. But read the line from his official bio below. It all fits together.

Quote:
Mara spent eight years (1994-2001) operating ProRate, Inc., an independent football scouting service contracted by as many as 15 NFL franchises. The service provided an evaluation of the free agent market in the NFL.

So now..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/31/2015 9:27 am : link
a sub-.500 record means the FO is doing a terrible job?

Not surprisingly, it is a shallow analysis from a poster still looking for his testicles after being de-balled by Bill2
Charles James is still playing DB for the Texans
andrew_nyg : 8/31/2015 10:08 am : link
they are giving him reps at RB because they see great potential in him at RB.

He was actually playing both ways in practice.

There was NO excuse for JR to let this kid walk. I have been done with JR since he decided that MLB and S are lower on the priority list of any positions on the field.

It's time to get a new GM.

That's a simple question to answer.

They didn't want a rookie being forced to start.

He waited until the position was so devoid of talent that had he not drafted one this year it would've been his job.
That's actually not what happened
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/31/2015 10:38 am : link
when you remember that they pushed pretty hard to get Devin McCourty at the start of Free Agency, and the Pats paid him big money.

Pretty sure this is an incredibly stupid post. If I'm wrong, so be it, but it's Coughlin and staff who decides who stays and goes.

Reese and co. are in charge of aquisition and salary management. The coaches are in charge of cuts.
Everyone has an argument..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/31/2015 10:59 am : link
to fit their stance.

Nat Berhe and Cooper Taylor are called pieces of shit for being injured and preety much people want them off the oster because they've been hurt.

James was hurt and people think getting rid of him was a colossal mistake.

It is madness around here.

Like I've said - the way people talk about Reese - it is like he inherited the SB rings, got into the position and put together a string of 4-12 seasons with no talent whatsoever.
Ten Ton Hammer: the Giants still had
Steve Filipowicz : 8/31/2015 12:14 pm : link
Dallas Reynolds on the roster when they signed Walton. The Giants could have played Reynolds at C, Richburg at LG and IMO have the same results as playing Walton at C,

Sorry but IMO signing and playing Walton and paying him $3M was another mistake by Reese.
Steve
arniefez : 8/31/2015 12:41 pm : link
I agree Walton was a bad signing and contract. Most people that post here said so the day it was signed. Just like the 3 free agent who got guaranteed money this free agent period to play roles usually filled by players making much less money who were drafted or college free agents. But if you think changing GM's is going to change the way the Giants pick players both from college and NFL free agents I think you're wrong. I don't think it matters who the GM is at this point. I think one or more of the owners are making the final calls on picking most of the players.
If you want to say he was overpaid, fine
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/31/2015 12:43 pm : link
but it was a one-year deal with zero long term impact. Dallas Reynolds can't be the reason why you don't take a low-risk chance to improve a position. That's not smart roster construction.
With no Baas, I liked the signing, especially
Big Blue '56 : 8/31/2015 12:49 pm : link
with a rookie Richburg..Didn't work out...There are tons of signings around the league that don't work out..
The only question would have..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/31/2015 12:52 pm : link
been where else to spend the money, but that money is a sunk cost that had no carry over effect to 2015.

Like said above, it was worth a shot and it failed. And that failure impact is minimal.
FatMan: a question for you
Steve Filipowicz : 8/31/2015 3:08 pm : link
If Reese had not wasted the money on Walton's contract, would that money have qualified as a carryover for the 2015 Cap?
No..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/31/2015 3:28 pm : link
unused cap money doesn't carryover.
And even if it HAD carried over
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/31/2015 3:46 pm : link
