NFT: Great SI article on Dwight Gooden's 1985 season

on and off field by Tom Verducci.

Staggering numbers, what a great season. 18 complete games. He was such a joy to watch. Hard to believe 30 years have passed.

And also started the spiral down with drugs almost immediately after.

While his drug problems are often cited as the reason behind his decline from greatness, it might have more to do with the 276 innings he pitched that year at age 20.

The 276 he pitching the following year as well.

and Pedro's 1999 are the best pitcher seasons I've followed closely.

There might have been other similarly dominant seasons (Guidry's 1978?) but I didn't follow them as closely.

I went to many Pedro games during that 1999 season and it was fun to watch.

Gooden I was limited to TV but he was filthy.

Main difference is Gooden was 20 years old in 1985 Pedro was 27 in '99, so with Gooden there were very high expectations after that.
