But, Jenkins said, that is reliant on the players performing and, in his words, learning "how to go into game day with more of a killer instinct" - something he feels has been lacking so far during this underwhelming preseason. "We've got to make it happen," Jenkins said. "We've got to have that game day intensity, that switch, drive, where we go out and we hit the field on game day, we take that level up another step higher. "A lot of times we come out, we practice well, we go through things, we're where we need to be. And then we get into the game and we may freeze up a little bit, or we just don't carry it over when you should be going into the game and stepping it up a notch. We've got to learn as a team how to go into game day with more of a killer instinct." |
Haha, yep.
yes
its stale ...
He's a bonafide starter on this team.
Such emotion was a big part of their Super Bowl runs, but they have had a lot of flat-out stinkers where they seemed to come out thinking, not fired up.
So I'm inclined to agree with Jenkins.
DT: Jenkins is our most proven pass-rusher from the interior, yet he's barely gotten any reps at DT in starting situations this preseason. AND with him starting at DE, Kuhn has been repping with the first team (though hopefully that's a blessing in disguise, as Kuhn's been getting slaughtered this preseason and may have earned his way off this roster).
We need some Samoans to raise the energy level.
You would think the Giants have done nothing since Stahan retired with the way he's canonized.
The Giants need talent. All the belief and fire and toughness isn't going to make one of the likely least talented defenses in the NFL good, no matter how many cliches players keep speaking in or how much fans eat up of them.
The question has never been "will the Giants struggle on defense?" It has always been "How long will the Giants struggle on defense?".
It will be interesting to watch, as Spags should be tested as to his ability to adapt and inspire this group.
Good times.
I still think they should have made the change at HC this offseason. Just think the Giants need a new voice. New way of doing things.
It's just excuse making for subpar personnel.
Those are two players who I think could help.
He's a cap buster but that's kinda why I wanted Suh and didn't mind letting JPP walk.
That said - this attitude issue comes up all the time and I think part of the reason is the personality of a lot of our players. Tuck and Eli were never vocal leaders like say, Brandon Jacobs, Strahan, Rolle. And this attitude since Strahan left has never really be present again until the Giants find themselves in the playoffs. Post 2008 I'd say. We lost that swagger.
It's NOT all the yelling and screaming at the start of the game, it's what you SHOW in the 4th quarter when you've held off a better opponent all day and you TAKE the game because you want it more.
Strahan showed that in the Superbowl; Jacobs in the 2008 playoff game against the Eagles; the rest of the team "threw in the towel" when Plaxico shot himself. Brandon played his heart out and kept encouraging others.
THAT is Killer Instinct.
Starting Odi and let him learn on the job.
81GD, good post.
Since Strahan's retirement, they have not found that toughness and confidence a team needs to be dominant on defense.

When Strahan retired, the Giants lost their identity, their fight, whatever you want to call it.

They did win a Super Bowl since Strahan retired. The defense was pretty good that year.
And they had possibly their most dominant team outside of 86 and 90 in the SB era the year after he retired.
