Eric's Giants/Jets Review, Part B-Bad Defense Needs Leader

CJ in AZ : 8/31/2015 6:51 pm
Eric's Preseason Giants v. Jets Game review created a emotional tidal wave of responses due to Eric's suggestion that Eli needs to "earn his next contract." Please DO NOT continue that controversy here-enough is enough---this one is about the DEFENSE.

How about some comments on Eric's other (in my mind, his primary) bombshell opinion:

Quote:
[A]ccept that this is a bad defense. They can’t stop the run, they can’t rush the passer, and they can’t cover. It’s a group that lacks toughness, physicality, leadership, confidence, and swagger.

Probably all true, Eric, you know better than I, but this defense WILL improve over the course of this season with Hankins, Odigi, Kennard, Bromley, Collins, DRC, maybe JPP, and a surprise or two leading the way, but ONLY if someone emerges as the new leader. Youth must be served on a bad defense unable to stop the run, rush the passer or cover. Beason is too brittle/Rolle too gone to be the leader for this 2015 "bad" defense---getting better starts with new leadership.

This is still

a ridiculous statement until we give the Defense a few REAL games to determine their direction. But hey let's continue to rant like a wild beast - because I am butt hurt - about a preseason game.
Oh and my

FAVORITE line from a non athlete is the athlete lacks TOUGHNESS.
With only the D-backs

having any real talent on this defense, where does the leadership come from? You would hope maybe from the safety or Middle Linebacker but the safety is a rookie and the Middle Linebacker is someone we got for a 7th round pick. JPP could have been that guy but even if he were here heprobably would have just been playing out his contract. Spags does not have the talent he had last time he was here and really didnt do too much with the last 3 teams he was on. I will agree with Eric and say, right now, this D is in trouble.
I say Kuhn's the guy

A veteran in his 4th year with the team and the coaches love him.
I don't think it comes down to one player or finding one leader

Is it likely that we already have someone on the roster that is magically going to kick the ass of players who are mailing it in, or just going through the motions? I don't know about that. Maybe in time Kennard or Collins can develop into a true captain of the defense. In the meantime, for this year though, we have a roster that regardless of understanding Spags new/old defense just simply aren't imposing their will on anyone. We can;t stop the rush, we can't put pressure on the QB, WRs and TEs continue to run clear across the middle of the field. I'm sure in time players will get comfortable with Spags defense. That part will improve. But will their effort? Are they going to bring in week 2 after Dallas very likely lights up this unit? What have we seen from this group of existing players and their time in real games last year or on the field in preseason this year to tell us otherwise? That's the biggest challenge. This defense is way, way far away from where it needs to be and it's not just one leader away.
JPP was their most hots one and arguably most talented player

But was he ever a leader?

Line is when a "BBI athlete" posts that he's amused when somebody with eyes says they see a lack of physical play and toughness. That's a good one.
And honestly I think we're all sick of how soft the team is
Bold Ruler : Mod : 8/31/2015 7:34 pm : link
Last year it was a big deal in November when Rolle called out the team for playing soft, not giving top effort. I think Beckham agreed saying everyone needed to improve their effort.

This is nothing new.

Let's make our observations without making assumptions, and yes, stick to our eyes. Your eyes see into a elite athlete's heart KWALL? Let's not confuse the lack of execution with a persons motivation, that is true observation.
Every time athletes play on a team that sucks, it becomes about effort

or leadership or fire.

You know what the Giants' problem is on that side of the ball? They have a terrible defensive talent level. They simply aren't good enough to compete, bell to bell, a lot of the time now, no matter how loud they bark or how much fire they have in their bellies.

No "leader" is going to help them unless that leader is like Suh-Watt talented and that help won't be because of intangibles.
The talent isn't there and this unit has a history of their own
Bold Ruler : Mod : 8/31/2015 7:44 pm : link
calling them out for playing soft. It's both.
I think we need to see how all these new pieces and
larryflower37 : 8/31/2015 7:50 pm : link
high talent come together.

Prince and DRC could be really strong ?
Taylor and Collins stay health and gel ?
Kennard and Thomas play to expectations ?
Beason stays health ?
Young Tackles step up Hankins and Bromley ?
Odighizuwa keeps playing strong against the run and holds the edge ?
Damontre Moore learns to play the position the right way until JPP comes back healthy?

If this happens we have a young strong defense.
Stranger things have happened.
1 in a million?
So you say we have a shot?

That line was partly inspired by Joey in VA's statement, which I agreed with.

Great defenses usually play with swagger.

And Amukamara already has come out and said they are not playing with confidence.

Does anyone here really think this is a tough, physical, aggressive defense? Seriously?

"You want to feel sure going into the season, especially the first week being a division opponent. You want to be confident like we put some good stuff on film, which we have. But I don't think we put some good stuff consistently on film. Going into the season you want to feel ready, you want to feel right, you want to feel confident and feel like we're ready to take on an opponent for real," cornerback Prince Amukamara said. "Personally, I'm not there yet. We're getting there but I'm not there yet."

Quote:
"We've got to make it happen," Jenkins said. "We've got to have that game day intensity, that switch, drive, where we go out and we hit the field on game day, we take that level up another step higher.

"A lot of times we come out, we practice well, we go through things, we're where we need to be. And then we get into the game and we may freeze up a little bit, or we just don't carry it over when you should be going into the game and stepping it up a notch. We've got to learn as a team how to go into game day with more of a killer instinct."
Thinking too much

saps aggression. The D needs some time to get comfortable with their calls. Hopefully, it will be soon.

I do think they need a "game changer", A defensive "Beckham".
Don't know , if they have that guy yet.

Who are the leaders on defense? The gimpy Beason and who?

How can you call a defense tough or physical that hasn't been able to stop the run for the last few years?

This is a defense that hasn't been able to stop Blake Bortles and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
defense is still settling in
bc4life : 8/31/2015 9:45 pm : link
they really don't know the defense yet. they have some physical players. I don't think we know what we have yet.

And, they might just get better as the season wears on.
No defense with talent as inferior as the Giants are trotting out
Devon : 8/31/2015 9:52 pm : link
there most of the time now is going to look physical or aggressive.

Swagger only strangely exists when you're actually good at what you do for the most part. No one is going to rah-rah our shitty safeties into not being shitty or our DL into being the second coming of Strahan/Osi/Tuck/Robbins/Cofield.

Re: Rolle, every single game they lost during his tenure here, good years or bad, he'd start going on about fire and needing to be the bigger dog, want it more, whatever. They never lost a single game in Antrel's mind because they just weren't good enough. He was the king of cliché athlete speak that fans love to drink up.
they need some successes

Think it will have to start with DLine, and it won't be the one that has been starting this preseason.

Defense Is Not Good
Jeffrey : 9/1/2015 3:13 pm : link
They have incomplete DEs, like Moore, who cannot contain the run and others like Jenkins who are playing out of position at DE. I like the DTs, if Hankins continues and Bromely and Ellis develop. The LBs are improved provided that Beason can stay healthy--unlikely--and regain some of his youthful speed and quickness--not likely. The DBs are an injury away from disaster and playing with one who has never completed a full season and another who played through an assortment of injuries last year. The backups at DB would struggle to make most rosters on playoff teams. The safety position--well perhaps in a year but for now it's youth and inexperience competing with over-the-hill veterans. Not a good mix.
