Eric's Preseason Giants v. Jets Game review created a emotional tidal wave of responses due to Eric's suggestion that Eli needs to "earn his next contract." Please DO NOT continue that controversy here-enough is enough---this one is about the DEFENSE.
How about some comments on Eric's other (in my mind, his primary) bombshell opinion:
[A]ccept that this is a bad defense. They can’t stop the run, they can’t rush the passer, and they can’t cover. It’s a group that lacks toughness, physicality, leadership, confidence, and swagger. |
Probably all true, Eric, you know better than I, but this defense WILL improve over the course of this season with Hankins, Odigi, Kennard, Bromley, Collins, DRC, maybe JPP, and a surprise or two leading the way, but ONLY if someone emerges as the new leader. Youth must be served on a bad defense unable to stop the run, rush the passer or cover. Beason is too brittle/Rolle too gone to be the leader for this 2015 "bad" defense---getting better starts with new leadership.
This is nothing new.
Let's make our observations without making assumptions, and yes, stick to our eyes. Your eyes see into a elite athlete's heart KWALL? Let's not confuse the lack of execution with a persons motivation, that is true observation.
You know what the Giants' problem is on that side of the ball? They have a terrible defensive talent level. They simply aren't good enough to compete, bell to bell, a lot of the time now, no matter how loud they bark or how much fire they have in their bellies.
No "leader" is going to help them unless that leader is like Suh-Watt talented and that help won't be because of intangibles.
Prince and DRC could be really strong ?
Taylor and Collins stay health and gel ?
Kennard and Thomas play to expectations ?
Beason stays health ?
Young Tackles step up Hankins and Bromley ?
Odighizuwa keeps playing strong against the run and holds the edge ?
Damontre Moore learns to play the position the right way until JPP comes back healthy?
If this happens we have a young strong defense.
Stranger things have happened.
1 in a million?
So you say we have a shot?
Great defenses usually play with swagger.
And Amukamara already has come out and said they are not playing with confidence.
Does anyone here really think this is a tough, physical, aggressive defense? Seriously?
"A lot of times we come out, we practice well, we go through things, we're where we need to be. And then we get into the game and we may freeze up a little bit, or we just don't carry it over when you should be going into the game and stepping it up a notch. We've got to learn as a team how to go into game day with more of a killer instinct."
I do think they need a "game changer", A defensive "Beckham".
Don't know , if they have that guy yet.
How can you call a defense tough or physical that hasn't been able to stop the run for the last few years?
This is a defense that hasn't been able to stop Blake Bortles and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
And, they might just get better as the season wears on.
Swagger only strangely exists when you're actually good at what you do for the most part. No one is going to rah-rah our shitty safeties into not being shitty or our DL into being the second coming of Strahan/Osi/Tuck/Robbins/Cofield.
Re: Rolle, every single game they lost during his tenure here, good years or bad, he'd start going on about fire and needing to be the bigger dog, want it more, whatever. They never lost a single game in Antrel's mind because they just weren't good enough. He was the king of cliché athlete speak that fans love to drink up.
