NFT: Better Call Saul...? What was the general consensus

Run with 81 : 9/1/2015 7:51 am
on this spin off from Breaking bad??

We just finished watching BB, final 3 episodes last night. WOW, F'in LOVED IT!! Then we heard about Better call Saul, so since I really liked his character in BB, I DL'ed & watched the 1st 2 episodes but not sure if I like it or not. Is it one of those series' that one must give a bunch of episodes to get to know it / like it?

IMDb gave it 8.9/10 Netflix shows 3.8/5 stars...

What say you BBI... Good, Great or not worth the time.

Thanks...
If you are a fan of BB

Then I think you'll enjoy BCS. I liked it for the simple reason that Saul was my favorite character in BB.
I never wathed BB

It didn't stop me from really enjoying the first season of BCS

It obviously isn't going to be Breaking Bad so if you are expecting
robbieballs2003 : 9/1/2015 7:59 am : link
that then you might be disappointed. I thought it waa very well done. They tie in some of the old characters like Tuco and Mike. Mike is a big part of the show. I liked it a lot. Like BB you see the transformation of Saul. You see he was a fuck up and then tried to become legit but even though he is trying really hard to be legit he keeps getting screwed over so he always seems to revert back to what he knows best which is scamming.
It was a really good
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 9/1/2015 8:00 am : link
Show. Beautifully shot and done.
Most people liked it, but not me
Milton : 9/1/2015 8:02 am : link
I didn't hate it, because Saul is fun character, but I felt like ultimately it doesn't deliver on the promise of the first couple episodes. It was generally well-received on BBI during it's run, so don't go by me. And as disappointed as I was, I'm sure I'll tune in for season 2.
A step below BB
gmen9892 : 9/1/2015 8:02 am : link
But a very good show to watch nonetheless. It started off a bit slow, but most definitely picked up. I would definitely give it a shot.
I liked it

definitely worth the watch.
I enjoyed it a lot.

Looking forward to Season 2.
I was a big fan

Definitely worth watching. Great job by Michael McKean as Saul's older brother.
The Mike episode
Headhunter : 9/1/2015 8:17 am : link
with his daughter in law was one of the best scenes I've ever seen on any show at anytime.
not without it's flaws
fkap : 9/1/2015 8:24 am : link
but it is a show that I make an extra effort to catch, unlike most TV where I don't care if I watch or not.
disappointing for me
natefit : 9/1/2015 8:26 am : link
missed both the menace and the dark humor of BB.
solid show
Sonic Youth : 9/1/2015 8:26 am : link
not as good as BB... the whole season seems to be setting up to drop the hammer in season 2, I will say that.

If you like BB, watch it.
Honestly though
Sonic Youth : 9/1/2015 8:27 am : link
If you want a show that's on right now which I think has a shot to grow into the caliber of BB, start watching Mr. Robot.
It was well done
Randy in CT : 9/1/2015 8:28 am : link
and I wasn't crazy about it. It was OK.
The overwhelming consensus is
RB^2 : 9/1/2015 8:29 am : link
that Mike a fooking BOSS in case that wasn't already clear.

Seriously, though, I thought it was well received by the public. Personally, I thought it was a plus show. They tie in the BB stuff in a way that's not cheesy or overdone. Also, Tuco's back, which is awesome.

It isn't and never will be Breaking Bad. BB is basically the LT of TV shows.
OK... I'm on it for the remainder of S-1
Run with 81 : 9/1/2015 8:38 am : link
Episodes 1 & 2 (for me) were just so~so. I'll keep at it.
Probably has been discussed ...
Beezer : 9/1/2015 8:47 am : link
... but any chance Jesse makes a BCS appearance at some point down the line? Doubtful Heisenberg does.
I just googled BB S-6 and

Internet rumour which was shot down.
i enjoyed it
Old Dirty Beckham : 9/1/2015 9:35 am : link
and think the best is yet to come. "Saul" isnt even "saul" yet. You're seeing how he became the crooked lawyer he is/was on BB.

I thoroughly enjoyed it!
GMENGianni : 9/1/2015 9:42 am : link
Saul is one of my favorite BB characters so I couldn't resist watching it.

Like someone above said, the episode that was mostly on Mike and his daughter, is one of the best episodes of any show I've ever watched.
Loved it

Jonathan Banks was brilliant.
It was very, very good.

.
And while it's clearly never going to be Breaking Bad
Mike in Long Beach : 9/1/2015 10:32 am : link
which is arguably the greatest show of all time, I'd actually argue that season 1 of BCS is right up there, if not better, than season 1 of Breaking Bad.

For me, Breaking Bad started distinguishing itself in it's 2nd half.
Agree with Mike
Samiam : 9/1/2015 11:03 am : link
I think it's better than Breaking Bad was in its 1st season. Breaking Bad got better as it went on.
Is that true about BB season 1?
pjcas18 : 9/1/2015 11:03 am : link
I was late to the game on Breaking Bad and watched seasons 1 - 3 on Netlfix.

I was hooked from the first scene of episode 1 of season 1 when Walter White is in his underwear in the middle of the desert. that was the first scene, right?

I personally think so. Jessie's character was big for me. He was very annoying in the early seasons. All he did, for me anyway, was take away from Walt's screentime.

But once he really sit his stride the show become so much more well-rounded IMO.

Same here. The first episode was tremendous. And it's amazing how much story they were able to pack into that one episode without the seams showing.
One of my favorite scenes from season 1 (episode 4, I think) - ( New Window )
And don't get me wrong.
Mike in Long Beach : 9/1/2015 11:11 am : link
It was still great. It was more a compliment to BCS than a knock on BB.
Gave up after the first 3 episodes
Ron from Ninerland : 9/1/2015 12:31 pm : link
This show looked like an attempt to be cute and funny. It wasn't. Saul is a naturally humorous character, they should have let it go at that. Instead it looked like they tried to make this a low key sitcom. For example Tuco was a terrifying menace in BB. Now we're supposed to laugh at him ? Same thing with Mike Ehrmantraut. IMHO, Breaking Bad was the darkest intense drama I've ever seen on television. Saul Goodman and to some extent Hank provided some comic relief, but the attempt to change the whole BB universe into a comedic one just didn't work.

I thought BCS was slow moving and boring but like I say, I only saw the first 3 episodes. If the story picked up after that , let me know.

Hehe, funny enough, I think most people would argue it really took off around 4 or 5.
I had extremely low expectations, but the show surprised me with
shockeyisthebest8056 : 9/1/2015 2:06 pm : link
how well done it was. Then I was certain Chuck, the paranoid shut-in, was going to be a mess for the show, but he wasn't. Finally, I thought I would spend most of the time wondering what Walt and Jesse were up to. Now I regret that the characters of BCS ever ran into them.
Took a little while to build its own steam
BigBlue89 : 9/1/2015 3:19 pm : link
But by the end of season 1 I felt the series had established it own thing. Highly recommend watching the whole season if you're a BB fan, it was worth it.

Jonathan Banks deserves an Emmy!
as a lawyer who hung out his own shingle years ago

I could relate to much more in this show than I expected. Quite funny actually.

Fan of BB so I loved the show.

Jesse's character was supposed to die in Season 1, maybe that's why he was an annoying character, but then Vince Gilligan realized Jesse would be good for the remainder of the show and kept him in, that's why his character got much better as the series went on.
