What is this based on when they haven't played a game yet

everyone liked the Giants defense this time last year
djm : 9/1/2015 10:57 am : link
and no one really liked Dallas this time last year.

Talk to me in December.
and FWIW----this time last year
djm : 9/1/2015 10:59 am : link
BBI was convinced the Giants offense would suck balls all year long. It finished 10th or better. It had some rough moments especially early but the consensus proved to be wrong. The offense was pretty good once it got things going.

Most predictions will end up wacky and wrong again this season.

Akin to the meaningless power polls in college before they even start their season?

And mock drafts.

but whether most fans admit or not they wanted this team to be "rebuilt." They wanted resources devoted to the OL. They wanted the old guys ushered out and new young talent brought in. They wanted Fewell gone. They wanted Gilbride gone. Many wanted Coughlin gone...ok you didn't get that but you got everything else.

I keep seeing posts on wanting this roster to be blown up...a rebuild is needed....that's exactly what the Giants have done. 3 high picks are starting on the OL and a high priced FA is at RG. The defense is completely rebuilt with young talent. All the old guys are gone. Spags and McAdoo are here. What else did many of you expect? The team is going young and it's nothing but doom and gloom here. Relax and forget the negative narrative that this team has to win now and the 3 bad years in a row...that's the past. What if this team makes a little noise this season? You'd have a young team with a great QB building something that could be sustained for a few years. That's what you want.

I don't know...I just don't think it's fair to completely bash this regime before they have really had a fair shot to start this thing over and progress. Last year really was year one of the process. This is year 2 maybe they another step or two forward this year. Haven't they earned some trust here? I think they clearly have and you can see the drafts are looking good since 2013.

For me, the mock drafts are helpful..I can learn(on paper) about players I never see because of not following college ball..
when I say
djm : 9/1/2015 11:17 am : link
the defense (team) is completely rebuilt I don't mean that all the pieces are in place, but it's taking shape. We are so much further along than early 2013. That team was a nightmare. We had virtually no real young talent to speak of other than Pugh and Randle and Hankins and they were all unproven. We have much more in the pipeline now.

IT is what it is...I get that the team needs to show progress but I think the negativity these last few months is way over the top and somewhat unwarranted. Talk about a lack of patience the fucking season hasn't even started yet and fans are destroying this team.
Considering
Metnut : 9/1/2015 11:18 am : link
that we've been terrible the past two years, have looked bad in the preseason, and have suffered injuries across the board, I think it's a fair ranking.

There's some reasons to think we can end up being a good team, but I'm not sure why any national writer would be bullish on NYG 2015.
Just a wild guess from the uneducated
Johnny Boy : 9/1/2015 11:20 am : link
but perhaps they are basing their assessment on the fact that we have had three losing seasons in a row, have the same inept management crew running the show, employ players who are constantly injured and unable to perform and have not added any proven NFL players that will bring a positive influence to the game result.

Again I may be wrong and things are not what I see them to be.
Well one thing isn't as you see it..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/1/2015 11:22 am : link
we haven't had 3 losing seasons in a row. In fact, you have to go back to '78-'80 to say that.

Agree completely. We have no idea what the season will bring but we're clearly trying to move things along in the right direction. With what some people write around here, you'd think we were the Jets or the Washington team. Pre-season games and media polls are all meaningless.
Some highlights from Kirwan's 2014 preseason power rankings
rsjem1979 : 9/1/2015 11:34 am : link
#4 - New Orleans Saints (finished 7-9)
#5 - SF 49ers (finished 8-8)
#12 - Chicago Bears (finished 5-11)
#29 - Dallas Cowboys (finished 12-4)

There's really no reason to take power rankings seriously, particularly power rankings issued more than a week before the regular season starts.

What else could you base it on?
Well, that's easy. What talent has been added/lost in FA and the draft. That's 100x more significant that pre-season. How was the team playing the last half of last year and what changes have taken place to the roster during FA/Draft?

I mean people are makinng it sound as though it's impossible to rank the teams. Cmon. Anyone following football generally knows which teams are the top 10 (with one surprise thrown in) and which teams are the bottom 10 (with one surprise thrown in). It really isn't voodoo or magic.
