NFT: Yankees call up 8 players

Beer Man : 9/1/2015 11:16 am
Something to kill time while we wait for the Giants' cuts. The Yankees have called up eight players as September call-up - Dustin Ackley, Andrew Bailey, Caleb Cotham, Rico Noel, James Pazos, Jose Pirela, Rob Refsnyder, and Austin Romine.

Only surprise is Rico Noel, who is not hitting his weight, but is a base stealing machine.

Sorry folks no Aaron Judge.

Thank god

Please let Ryan sit his ass on the end of the bench until you need a defensive replacement. It'll be interesting to see if Bailey can bring anything to the table too.
Surprised Romine got the nod over Sanchez
giants#1 : 9/1/2015 11:25 am : link
especially since Sanchez is on the 40 man and Romine wasn't. Though Sanchez may be battling some injuries as he hasn't played in a few days.

Bailey's looked good this year. He can definitely help shorten games.
Isn't Sanchez
illmatic : 9/1/2015 11:26 am : link
on the DL?
Yea
AJ23 : 9/1/2015 11:31 am : link
Sanchez just went on the DL, which is why Romine is up instead.
I know it can't change much this year
Stu11 : 9/1/2015 11:51 am : link
except for some pinch runners here and there but this team needs some infusion of speed in the every day lineup going forward next year. After Gardy/Ellsbury this team is like a beer league softball team running the bases one at a time. I understand a lot of time big time hitters are slow, but what in the hell is the thought process behind having a light hitting 2b with no speed?
Judge not really ready to help much anyway.
BeerFridge : 9/1/2015 12:03 pm : link
Wouldn't mind Pirela/Ref getting some starts at 2B and maybe Bailey can do something out of the pen.

Refsnyder's not a burner, but will can probably steal 10-15 a year and won't clog the bases. Other than that, there's not much speed on the way (maybe Slade/Mason as 4th OFers) until Mateo arrives!
They DFA'd Tyler Austin
Phil in LA : 9/1/2015 12:21 pm : link
which is a bit of a tragic story.

IDK if it is tragic, he'll continue to get chances because he is talented, but it is unlikely a team will entrust him with a 40-man spot if he doesn't pick it up.

They're bringing up Noel because they don't want to burn Mateo's options by adding him to the 40-man when he won't contribute regularly.
Still can't believe

they lost that fuckin game last night. That ump was a goddamned joke.
yea Dun I would have been shocked if they had brought Mateo up
Stu11 : 9/1/2015 1:21 pm : link
he hasn't played an inning past A Ball. Hopefully going forward we can have an every day guy like Refsnyder worked in there. Don't need to be a speedster per say just someone who can actually ocassionally go from 1st to third or eeee gads score on a hit from 2nd base...

Mateo probably starts at Tampa next year, maybe Trenton but that would be a bit of a surprise. If he could finish the year at AA he might get a call-up. If he really hits SWB wouldn't be out of the question.

he was on a rocket ride till the wrist injuries. It's not like he dogs it and needs to pick it up. He needs to get healthy, if he can ever be 100% again. Braves will probably grab him off waivers.

The Yankees called up Rico Noel who is batting .059 over Aaron Judge.... Comical.
You need to understand the rules
arniefez : 9/1/2015 3:18 pm : link
and how baseball works. They called up a guy who will pinch run on a team with a bunch really slow guys. Judge is not on the 40 man roster. Putting him on the 40 man roster means someone has to be released. It also starts his rule 5 and other contractual obligations. He would never play anyway with the team in a pennant race. If they were in the Red Sox position you might have a point. There's no reason to start the contractual process for a guy who would sit and watch.
I need to learn the rules
arniefez : 9/1/2015 3:20 pm : link
has nothing to do with rule 5. Just 40 man roster issues. Putting him on the 40 man takes care of rule 5.

That's irrelevant since Noel wasn't on the 40 man either.

That said, I agree with your 1st point: they needed a pinch runner off the bench with guys like Arod, McCann, Teix, and Beltran.

And Judge has struggled adjusting to AAA pitching. He doesn't need to be rushed.
It's not just about merit. It's role. Noel is a late inning pinch
BeerFridge : 9/1/2015 3:23 pm : link
run guy - you will probably never see him with a bat in his hand. Judge would not be good at that and would likely not have a role on a team that is trying to win games.
Yes, but come
Pego61 : 9/1/2015 3:24 pm : link
the offseason, when you need every 40 man spot, you can release Noel and not care. Judge doesn't need to be on the 40 man this year and take up a spot for someone like Ben Gamel over the winter.

I agree! I just hope they take their revenge tonight and bury the stinking Bosox under a huge wave of runs, like they did to the Atlanta Braves on the weekend. Go Yankees!!
Yanks AFL roster announced...
Dunedin81 : 9/1/2015 5:34 pm : link
Tyler Wade, Tyler Webb, Gary Sanchez, Dustin Fowler, Chaz Hebert and Eric Jagielo. No real surprises there, Wade struggled in his transition to AA, Fowler is on the cusp of being a very good prospect, Hebert had something approximating a breakout year but is in something of a sh-t or get off the pot regarding his roster status and Webb hasn't pitched in a couple months and may or may not be an MLB-caliber reliever.

Out at least 2 more weeks per Cashman. Hope Bird can do something.

too much sugar for too long
RasputinPrime : 9/1/2015 6:58 pm : link
has weakened Teix's bones. That really hurts no matter what Bird does.

I think the callups were all sound moves - except Cotham because he seems like he has been learning more than we'd like from Capuano.
