Coughlin mentioned punting competition. Says it will extend beyond today, even if some guys aren't here. Hmmmm #giants |
This is the 2nd time in a week that Coughlin has called out that the punting competition is open. They've used Malone more and more the past few games, including on holding for field goals/extra points. He has a pretty high cap # for 2015- $3.075 million. On BBI we discussed the possibility of cutting him prior to June 1, but I wonder with the money owed to him this year and next year, if the Giants are going to push him out door...or force a big restructure/pay cut.
Is that an indicator that he's fading though? I heard Papa say TC wanted to stress directional kicks, but if he's hitting end zone, that seems to be more about coverage and maybe lack of touch. Leg appeared to be live.
Agreed, which is why it was noticeable that Malone was handling the holding duties for Brown several times this pre-season. And if they do go for Fields, he was the holder in Miami (save for the one gif of him taking a ball to the facemask)
As to your question, he hasn't given his gunners a chance to make a play on the ball. He's hit it too hard down the middle of the field in situations where he has to pooch punt the ball.
Now that doesn't mean he isn't doing it but it's strange with how much he posts that almost none of it is about football.
Eric, thanks.
But there has always been stuff with him that has to piss off Coughlin...i.e., social media stuff. Even ripping Tebow recently.
I think so, the injury settlement that you mentioned. When his back heals, he'd probably want to have a chance to hook on with another team right away. Robinson is also gone IMO. Strange that they were both taken a few picks apart.

That's not fair to SW, E..His social media stuff(beyond weight-training and his love of family) has given him access to schools, TC's Jay Fund and other causes to help the disabled and depraved..I doubt TC is anything but supportive of SW's giving his selfless time to be helpful
We all get carried away at times..I'm sure he got an earful from TC..I doubt that would cause TC to be turned off by him
Eric, thanks.
Definitely, that's why I said that it could mean absolutely nothing. just kinda surprised you don't see him punt the ball or anything on there.
Lately?
:)
He hasn't punted well.
This shit got real last week when Malone spit the punts with him and then held for the snaps.
Coughlin is the one who has now said it is an open competition. Today he said Weatherford is also competing with guys cut on the waiver wire.
This is an excellent point!

Based on TC's latest comment, maybe they want to replace him, but not with Malone. In any event, I agree that Malone splitting the punts and getting to hold is not a good sign for Weatherford.
His performance was shaky all preseason, and he hasn't shown he's completely back from the ankle/foot injury last year.
I watch games with my eyes closed by heart open.
A: Where does it? Well, there’s a game to go and it’s going to be a competitive thing. Not necessarily with the guys that are here. That goes for any position. Any position. People have to understand that. You’re not competing just against the guys here, you’re competing against the waiver wire.
Q: Well, what have you wanted to see out of Steve?
A: Well, you know what we’re always after is directional, hang time, distance, location, hang, and the opportunity to put us in the best position from a coverage standpoint. Basically for me, it’s always been put it outside the numbers.
Q: How do you think he’s done with that?
A: Well, he’s been off and on. He’s had some good ones and he’s had some that aren’t so good.
Pre-season? Always with my eyes..In my 60 years of Giants Football, I can't recall too many, if any pre-seasons meaning anything..Pre-season is for getting in shape(now more than ever), getting players acclimated to each other and seeing as many players in-game as is possible prior to cutdown from 90 to 46..
There aren't many snaps for players to get into any kind of flow imo..As I said, some teams look great, "ready" and good to go during pre-season and in many cases look nothing like their pre-season accomplishments, such as they are..
That's how I, dorgan, FMiC and many others view it..It's why I've never, ever, been concerned about pre-season performance..I take it for what I perceive it is..
Feel free to judge Eli amd other players by their 15-20 snaps a game(I am not being sarcastic)..I refuse to, either way
I'll let them speak for themselves..My feeling is that they're basically in agreement with what I wrote re what pre-season is for..If not, they'll certainly set the record straight..:)
Eli was just an example, not the thrust of my point..Am I missing YOUR point? Perhaps I am
I don't know how good or bad the team will be, but anyone, I mean anyone, who bases how they will do because of the preseason is simply out of their gourd. Eli never plays well in the preseason, TC treats them like glorified scrimmages and we don't gameplan, and people wonder why we are outmatched and look dreadful?
And
Yes...

We've looked so outmatched and dreadful in the regular season that we've had two losing seasons since 2004.
Having watched this team for 42 years or so (and damn I feel old typing that), very rarely has preseason translated into the regular season results. That's why guys like Sean Bennett became legends. It is why Eli has never done well in the preseason and is a two time SB MVP.
i really don't know how smart it is to realize this, but it certainly is dumb to not realize it.
I hear you, but with limited snaps, I wouldn't quite assign a red flag to it..Now if it continues unabated during the regular season AFTER they ostensibly should be in sync, THEN, I worry
From his Facebook posts, he has said his ankle wasn't an issue..He's been saying that for months I believe..Worried? Not quite yet..If he's deemed to be on the downslope, then he needs to be replaced

knowing that he's coming off of that ankle/foot injury? Steve's been a solid punter for us, but I don't think Coughlin would put him on blast twice if he wasn't worried himself!

Being a Giants fan, you should know damn well never to take a player at his word when they're talking about injuries. :-)

I wouldn't cut him solely for cap reasons, but it has to be a consideration if you can get equal production for less cost. even though we don't need the money now, it can still be put to good use next offseason.
