Rock: Selvie believes Giants' no-name defense can succeed

Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/1/2015 4:42 pm
Quote:
George Selvie thinks the Giants defense will be just fine this season despite what the rest of the world is saying about the beleaguered unit. One of the reasons he is confident: He helped prove the rest of the world wrong just last year.

Selvie was a member of the Cowboys defense that, at this time in 2014, was being projected as one of, if not the worst, in the league. They lacked star power, they lacked toughness, and they lacked discipline. But when the regular season began, they became a big part of Dallas' playoff season.

George Selvie believes Giants' no-name defense can succeed like 2014 Cowboys did - ( New Window )
I'm hopeful Selvie is on target..

The Cowboys' example is a good one..Regardless, it's gonna take some time

did Dallas have a lot of projected starters miss a lot of games due to injuries (I honestly don't remember their situation).
Did Selvie play in the last

They lost Sean Lee before the season
the Dallas D was overrated

middle of the pack D (19th in yards, 15th in pts), aided by their offense dominating TOP (3rd in the NFL).

The Giants need some young players (Collins, Moore, Hankins, OO, Kennard, Thomas) to step up in a hurry if they're going to be even an average D.

Ball control would help a great deal imv

They don't have to be great...
okiegiant : 9/1/2015 4:51 pm : link
average would be a huge improvement. But when you look at the Dline players currently on the roster even average seems like a reach.

Hopefully they step up and start making some plays. Time will tell.

Yea, unfortunately, while I think the offense will put up some points, my (uneducated) guess is that they'll be more like Philly in that regard than Dallas. Philly was dead last in TOP. The Giants obviously won't play at Philly's pace, but I see a lot of big plays assuming Cruz/Beckham/Randle get and stay healthy.

can be middle of the road, we can make the playoffs

its not the superstars making all the plays, it is the defense in sync flying to the ball and the DB's are in the right place. A good Defense is like a fine tuned orchestra, everyone knows their part, and plays their instrument. Under Fewell it often seemed that there were blown assignments and rarely did he make adjustments. Hoping Spags gets them all on the same page
Awesome

OTOH, I can't remember the last time an NFL player said "We suck!"

I saw nothing from the defensive line in the Jets game. Um, maybe it is just preseason and that whole debate, but that number one D-line was getting mam handled by the Jets O-line. I agree with the others that if the offense plays well, it can conceal the awfulness of the defense. I just hope we're not in for an even ruder awakening come September night in Dallas like we had last year the first week against Detroit. (The offense was complete trash that night too)

Regardless of peoples' feelings on pre-season, I wouldn't put much stock in the likely beating the Clwboys will give us in the opener..That almost APPEARS to me to be a given..Try to project further down the road, if possible..It's gonna take time, imo
It took Spags a couple of games into '07
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 9/1/2015 6:05 pm : link
For the defense to start jelling. Didn't GB put up like 35 on us week 2?

I hope history repeats itself.

That said, to paraphrase Rick Pitino, Strahan isn't walking through that door. Tuck isn't walking through that door. Osi isn't walking through that door.

Big Blue 56, I still think the Giants do have a chance, it is the NFL and it is a division game, obviously. The Giants almost had them in the 2013 opener.

And who knows? the Cowboys could be one of those teams you expect to be the 12-4 replicate that they were last year and shit the bed this year! But that Giants D line just looks awful and it might be a nightmare vs the talented Dallas offensive line.

Hmm IDK about that because I recall it was him who picked off Eli's very first pass and taking it to the house on that ill advised screen opening week of 2013. Right?
He played in the SB against Seattle

I have been predicting a down year for Dallas as I believe the Murray loss AND what it allowed Romo to do was neyond huge..The other RBs had a very good YPC, but they didn't have to carry the rock 400 times..

That said, I'm not sure we'll be ready in Game 1..Who do you think I want to be right here? :)

We gave up 45 and 35 in weeks one and two against Dallas and GB in 2007. We also gave up 31 to Dallas in week 10, 41 to Minny (was this the pick six game?) in week 12 and of course 38 to NE in week 17. That unit was hardly a shut down D until the playoffs.
21 of that
Route 9 in LEH : 9/1/2015 8:48 pm : link
41 was yes, the 3 pick-6s

I remember Ross got burnt by Rice
