He's not under contract. He's on the Reserve/Franchise Player List.
assuming 25 each on O and D
WeatherMan : 9/1/2015 7:35 pm : link
10 DB's and the standard 6 LBs leaves 9 DL. My eyes say cut Kuhn, but he's been starting leading me to believe that one of Ellis or Selvie is on the block instead. At LB my gut says Herzlich but that would be a big hit to an already shot up ST unit, Unga needs to stand out there against the Pats to make the team.

WR is a bit easier, with 4 locks in OBJ, Cruz, Randle, and Harris. I keep Jones and Davis, but Parker is right there for the last spot - Talley to the PS, Washington to the curb.
would cut

Kuhn --- bad player
Mclain- done
Herz- cant cut unga for him
Washington- meh
Parker--- we know hes mediocre... lets hope for more
BBI might actually be unanimous on DL and LB

Kuhn
Herzlich

WR is tougher, but I keep:
Beckham
Cruz
Randle
Harris
Davis
Jones
I don't see how Herzlich makes this team

has been hardly mentioned at camp...and he can be replaced on special teams.

And I think they cut Washington....he's been inconsistent...not as good as he was in the spring. Has dropped quite a few easy balls in the preseason.

Casillas, Harris, Thomas were brought in to improve specials.

I agree, and maybe look for someone on the waiver wire at Middle Linebacker. I do not feel that even a healthy Beason would be hard to replace.

The questionable health situation of Cruz, Beason, and Ayers makes this very muddy. Whichever one of them is least likely to suit up for the opener probably buys a spot for an extra backup. (For example, Preston Parker's best shot at making the team is probably as a sub for a gimpy Cruz.)

Rampant speculation: Given how squirrely the team has been about the whole affair, a shocker move like Ayers to short-term IR could be in the works.
LBs Still A Mess
Jeffrey : 9/2/2015 8:05 am : link
Beason is staying because Coughlin likes his savy vets, but he cannot stay on the field and when he does he is showing the signs of a tired and injured warrior who cannot get it done any longer. Really can make a case for cutting anyone on this unit other than Kennard and Unga.
Kuhn and Jenkins from DL.
Victor in CT : 9/2/2015 8:21 am : link
Kuhn just sucks. I think Jenkins just got old. Play Bromley and Ellis along with Hankins.

Washington, Parker, Talley on WRs. Washington and Parker just not that good. I'd rather have Jones than Talley.

Though to me the LBs are all JAGs (Kennard has a chance to be more if he stays healthy) you have to keep them all because it's a frequently injured bunch.
Eric so are you counting Ashlee Palmer as a lock at LB
FranknWeezer : 9/2/2015 9:15 am : link
or did you accidentally leave him off the list?
.
JonC : 9/2/2015 9:20 am : link
DL: Kuhn, and ideally Jenkins, but unlikely they release both given the lackluster play on the DL, so far.

LB: McClain or Herzlich, and keep Unga.

WR: Parker, Talley, Washington.
I'd be careful
Brandon Walsh : 9/2/2015 9:57 am : link
with those who think its a lock Washington is cut.

I know he hasn't had the best camp or play specials but Jerry Reese has control over the 53 man roster and has brought up his name unsolicited in many interviews both in the off-season and training camp talking about players they are excited about. His goal is to build a team that can not only compete this year, but over the long haul

Also, remember Mara would stop in when necessary, we saw it with in 2011 with Cruz.

Lastly, we all know the final preseason game can save a player who they want to keep (see Sinorice Moss)

Are you just looking at names? Unga has impressed all summer.
I will be completely stunned if Kenrick Ellis gets cut.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/2/2015 10:03 am : link
For one thing, he figures to be our best run-stuffer as the season goes on. Also, for those who read contractual tea leaves, he got a $500K guarantee on a 1-year contract. That's much more favorable, to the player, than a two-year deal like Herzlich's or Hynoski's with a similar guarantee. The contract pretty much locked Ellis in as one of the final 53 on the day he signed it.

My best-guess cuts at this point, with a few optimistic assumptions about injuries (Ayers and Beason):
DL: Kuhn, Bars, Hamilton
LB: McClain, Palmer, Farrand
DB: Harris, Fenner, Conway, Brown, Miles
OL: Jones, Cleary, Donnelly (the starting guards are also the backup tackles)
QB: Stanzi
RB: Harper
FB: Whitlock
WR: Jones, Parker, Washington
TE: Fells
ST: Boswell

I think they might cut to eight OL initially (sorry Gettis) and keep an extra defender. Then the allocations would get adjusted by Week 2, if not before.

I really have no idea who the last couple of DBs will be. It might come down to special teams. At DL and LB, a lot depends on the status of Ayers and Beason, plus maybe Selvie if his knee issue lingers - though Selvie would be a potential cut if Wynn were playing better. Kuhn makes the team if Jenkins has to play DE. Otherwise, I think he's done. McClain makes it if Beason isn't cleared to practice soon.

By "DB: Brown" I'm guessing you mean Chykie, not Stevie, right?

Talley over Jones at WR would be an eye-opener.

BBB- I value your opinion, and find it interesting you have Jones cut over Talley?
Brandon Walsh: I should have mentioned another optimistic assumption:
Big Blue Blogger : 9/2/2015 11:40 am : link
At WR, I assumed Randle is full-go and Cruz is close to 100%. If they need an immediate fill-in, either Jones or Parker has to make the team.

I don't really look at it as Talley over Jones, but as a combination of Talley and Davis over Parker and Jones. There are a few factors in play. Obviously, Davis and Talley offer more upside. Also, unlike Jones, their salaries aren't guaranteed if they make the opening night roster. (Jones's $950K salary qualifies for cap relief because only $80K is guaranteed, but $870K is still $870K.) Plus, with all the DB injuries, the WRs who can contribute on coverage teams get an edge over those who can't.

What would I do? Probably go thin elsewhere to initially keep seven WRs, then adjust later in the week when they know more about Randle and Cruz. The opening roster probably only has room for six.

It's difficult to see Palmer making the team. He's too far behind.
Brandon Walsh: I meant Stevie Brown gets cut; Chykie Brown stays.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/2/2015 2:25 pm : link
Brown didn't get a dime of guaranteed money - just an opportunity for a token roster bonus. They brought him in for exactly what Coughlin said: assessment. Conveniently, he will also absorb snaps against New England, reducing the opportunities for Collins and Taylor to injure themselves.

Chykie's bonus wasn't big ($200K), but it's something, and it suggests the staff liked what they saw last year.
