Coach

Willis NYP: This Giants team is unlikely to save Tom Coughlin’s job
"After three straight non-playoff seasons and a head coach who turned 69 on Monday, the consensus is the Giants must make the playoffs or the Tom Coughlin era likely is over. The Jerry Reese era could be over, too, creating a massive restructuring of the front office and coaching staff. That would seem logical, except the Giants essentially are in a rebuilding mode in a season when their mandate is the make the playoffs."

History

RIP Former Giants OLB Tom Scott who was with the Giants from 1959 through 1964...

He was acquired by the Giants from the Eagles in exchange for Jerry Huth and Ken McAfee in 1959. He had been a Pro Bowl selection with the Eagles in 1957 and 1958, two of six such selections for Scott. Prior to that he was a All-American at Virginia, talented enough to be later elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Gene Corrigan called Scott the top athlete in the history of the University of Virginia. Drafted by the Rams and sent to the Eagles, Scott was a mainstay on the Eagles defense. At 6-2 220 pounds Scott played both DE and OLB in the NFL never missing a game in his career.

In 1954 Scott was part of the Eagles "suicide seven" the 5-2 alignment that featured Scott at DE along with Jess Richardson, Frank Kilroy, Mike Jarmoluk, and Norm Willey on the line, and Wayne Robinson with Chuck Bednarik at LB. The unit was effective in holding opposing rushing attacks to minimal yardage on the ground. The Giants however in game nine of the season averaged 4.3 yards per rush against a the Eagles who were holding opponents to 2.4 yards per carry. With the late Frank Gifford and Kyle Rote at HB's and Eddie Price at FB behind the blocking of Roosevelt Brown and George Kennard the Giants won the initial key encounter 27-14. However late in the season the Eagles won at home 29-14, costing the Giants second place in the division. Late in the first quarter of that game Scott hit Giants QB Bobby Clatterbuck hard in the end zone and Willey recovered the resulting fumble for the Eagles first score. Scott also later throw a key block on a Eagles interception return for touchdown.

In 1955, harassment from Scott and Willey caused enough disruption in Otto Graham's passing game (7-17-150) to lead the Eagles to a 33-17 victory over the defending champs. With the Giants set to face the Eagles the next week, Coach Jim Lee Howell called Scott and Willey ends that would cause trouble for any passer in the league. The Giants would win that game 31-7 capitalizing on Eagle fumbles, but it was noted that Scott's pressure would cause issues from time to time.

In 1959 the Giants lost the services of starting OLB Bill Svoboda and Scott was brought in to compete with the versatile Cliff Livingston for playing time at linebacker alongside Sam Huff and Harland Svare. Scott would win the starting LLB position. He would also fill in for Harland Svare at RLB.

In 1960 with the announcement that Svare would retire and replace Tom Landry as defensive coach the initial plan had Scott moving to the RLB position. However Svare later elected to play in what would be his final Giant season and Scott became a valued reserve. In 1961 at the age of 31 he would take over the RLB spot for good holding it until his retirement after the 1964 season. In the snow game against Washington that ended the disappointing 1960 season Scott who had been filling in for injured LDE Jim Katcavage (Broken Clavicle) had a interception return for a touchdown.

With Scott adequately performing Svare's duties, Svare's became a full time defensive coach in 1961. Scott batted, caught, and returned a intercepted pass 65 yards for a touchdown to punctuate a key victory over the Eagles that season. Despite his size Scott was also known for his physical play. He could also get into altercations as he did with the Eagles Joe Robb in 1959 and Cleveland's Jim Brown in 1963, the Brown incident causing both players to be ejected from the game.

Scott along with Roosevelt Brown was named as a team captain in 1965 but Scott retired before training camp ended. After his retirement Scott would serve as a assistant Giants coach for several seasons. In the NFL of that era few assistant coaching positions were full-time. Most assistants like Scott were part time and had another occupation during the offseason.

Ratcliffe Richmond Times Dispatch: Virginia loses a legend in Tom Scott
"What Scott was most proud of from his NFL days was that he was captain of the Giants because he had earned the respect of his teammates, who he cherished to the end. In fact, Gifford, who died recently, and others would still exchange phone calls with Scott."

What a superb article. A must read for every fan, regardless of generation..

Quote:

He suffered his first stroke on Sept. 2, 2014. Five days later he suffered a second stroke, a heart attack and four seizures that some doctors thought would kill him. Cherry was with him in intensive care, and she held onto her husband and caressed him when his body shook violently, uncontrollably, trying to make it stop. She'd never witnessed a seizure before, and she was terrified. Soon one doctor was telling her that her high school sweetheart, the man she'd loved unconditionally for 64 years, was not going to make it through the night.

Tom Scott, who was later traded to the Giants and became a team captain.

There were two colorful personalities on that team that I've read about over the years: Norm "Wild Man" Willey and Frank "Bucko" Kilroy.

Depending on whose account you read, Willey sacked Charles Conerly, the Giants QB, somewhere between 8 and 17 times in ONE game.

One of the TEs, who weighed 235 lbs, on an opposing team was blocking Kilroy when, he says, Kilroy grabbed him by his jersey and lifted him off the ground with ONE hand, saying "Don't do that again".

Wish there was some old game tape to see those guys play.

I only saw Tom Scott play one game, late in his career, but what I remember is that he was a deadly tackler- didn't miss a tackle and stopped the runner in his tracks.

That fool Willis

BBI because he believes TC is gone after this year and possibly Reese as well.

Raises a good issue: Giants are in a rebuilding season when their mandate is to make the playoffs. When the issue is framed like that it shows the incredibly hot-seat that TC is on and indirectly Reese as well.
