Stevie Brown... Art Stapleton

Odd in what way? What's odd about it.

There are enough things going on with this team, you don't need to manufacture another thing to complain about.

Right now the Giants have temporary stopped the hemorrhaging at the position. They have two former NFL starters now as insurance policies/back-ups.

What will be more interesting to watch is who might come free on Saturday and does that kick Brown and/or Meriweather off of the roster. My guess is they have to keep at least one. But do they go with a 5th safety?

I don't imagine anything really interesting is going to shake loose at cuts.

The free agent class was light at safety, and so was the draft.

A 5th safety make little sense. How is the 5th player on the weakest unit on the team one of the "best 53."

Well, we can't wait until you start making sense.

Ex Chargers Billy Ray Smith (about defensive players) - "I don't know what it is about some players, but they always seem to be around the ball, and make big plays".

The answer is multi-faceted, here are just a few:

Playing in a good system that fits you abilities

Having great players around you that cover your mistakes (Harry Carson is the prime example, how he always had L.T.'s back)

Having great instincts (more important than speed) - All-time interception leader Paul Krause is the best example

As far as Stevie not having contact with Spags, how many players does Reese sign that may have not talked to Spags ? Do you think Merriweather spoke to him, before he signed ? Probably not.

Reese knows Stevie; I'm sure he spoke to Spags before the offer was made. What's the big deal ?

just picked up a veteran safety who fills a need. 2 years removed from acl surgery ( it usually takes 2 years to fully recover) and yet you bithc about how he was let go?

Spagnuolo returns after, to be blunt, failing at each spot he landed in after leaving the Giants. He's here because he was successful in the past. Not because of recent success. No other team in the league was going to give him a coordinator gig. So exactly how much pull do you expect him to have? Warts and all, Brown is the best option available less than 2 weeks from opening day in a safety market thinner than a piece of notebook paper, and he experienced his best season here. His return isn't much different than Spagnuolo's.

Bill, they've done that before. I remember one year they carried all of these shitty linebackers because they didn't really have any good ones.

B in ALB...I agree with you on Brown. For a big guy, he doesn't play the run or tackle or hit well. He had an amazing year in 2012 intercepting the ball (they were not all tipped passes/lucky plays) but he never made any plays on the ball in 2014.

I think the Giants are simply trying to find someone who knows Coughlin and the team environment to stop the bleeding. You can't go into the season with C.J. Conway and Justin Halley.

Don't think much of Brown either, but the Giants hold Merritt in high regard it would appear, and he's coached Brown here before, my guess is his opinion was heavily weighted.

Is not some stud costing big bucks. You dont need to have the DC interview him before the signing. TC and some position coaches know what he can do and it was a very small investment. Really not that surprising that the DC doesnt meet with every player before he is signed. I imagine they certainly met after the signing.

76 tackles in 2012, with 8 interceptions for 307 yards for Brown. He also defended 11 passes.

Meriweather is a two time Pro Bowler.

Collins was the best safety in the draft.

... I wouldn't have expected a lot of pre-signing due diligence. This is a no-risk tryout. To make the team, Brown needs to show Merritt that he's back to pre-ACL form, and Nat Berhe needs to go on IR and one of the top four safeties probably has to get hurt. Otherwise, Brown will be released and told, "Stay in shape, just in case."

I look at it this way: Stevie Brown signed a ceremonial one-week contract to retire a Giant. He just doesn't know it yet.

Except Stevie was terrible last season. Spags didn't fair poorly in Balitmore last I checked. Did he build up his resume enough to warrant a DC gig? Probably not but I can see the connection. To me, Brown has no range at all anymore and that was all he could do before.

I mean, does Brown even play on Special Teams? I don't think Meriweather has ever been a ST ace. Taylor can in a pinch although he should be starting right with Collins. Miles and Berhe are both solid ST players but are lingering with questions regarding their health. To me, a fourth S is someone who can do ST so that guy may not even be on the roster at this point.

I look at it as Brown v. Meriweather and loser of that battle is cut.

the guy was on the team for a few years. Most of the coaches have seen him and know exactly what he can or cannot do. they know his attitude and his mindset. It's not a major deal that Spags hadn't seen him.

Extensively on film when he reviewed the Giants '14 defense. He already has made mention that Miles was thought to be nothing more than a special- teams player when he was on the Ravens. It is not hard to figure.

here I am not going to dismiss his 2012 out of hand..Perhaps he is what he is, but if what he is, is a guy who makes plays on the ball, we certainly can use that...I was hoping he wouldn't be re-signed, but at this point the choices were slim and none..

Too, it does take some people more time than Adrian Peterson to recover from an ACL..Recover in speed and cutting..Probably not in his case, but still, for whatever reason, skill and/or divine intervention, he has a nose for the ball..

But there is a game tonight. We cannot afford another injury to Collins, Cooper or any DB right now. Brown is in game shape, can probably play most of the game and if he gets injured, it was $40k to save a potential starter. Plus it allows TC, Spags, Merritt to see if he improved from last year. Remember the Giants offered him a contract in the spring. Or if one of the other DBs gets hurt, there is an NFL vet safety there already...

Yeah, he won't know all the calls on D, but as an NFL vet, he's likely to pick the defense up quickly.

If he doesn't work out, they had a body for the game.

Yeah, that is nitpicking. If anyone gets injured they likely get a settlement and I believe I saw he got a $40k signing bonus.

Brown may not be McCourty, but frankly, he's immediately better than anyone else on the roster right now at S, except maybe Collins. The signing makes our team stronger, even if Brown has his flaws.

Alternatively, we could always line up the way the Redskins did on the first play of the season after Sean Taylor was killed.

Who is used in the subjective case, i.e., as the subject of a sentence.

A helpful trick is to substitute the matching personal pronoun and see if it makes sense.

Who was that masked man? Subjective case. HE was the masked man, not Him was the masked man.
He is the guy who stole your money. Subjective case. HE stole your money, not HIM stole your money.

Whom is used in the objective case, often as the object of a prepositional phrase.

Jerry Reese is the man in whom we trust. We trust HIM, not He.

Jerry Reese consulted an astrologer, whom he met in Seattle. Objective case because Reese (he) met HIM (objective case) in Seattle. You wouldn't say Reese met he.
