So I'm watching this Giants Training Camp Live on msg and Stapleton from the Bergen Record is claiming that Brown didn't meet with Spagnuolo before the Giants signed him. He said straight up, there was no meeting and Brown is immediately the #2 behind Collins. Plus, Brown demanded his release from Houston. Uh. What the fuck?
If Stevie doesnt want to play under the Spags parameters then bye-bye.

Where in the world did you garner that he doesn't want to play under Spags system?
He did CHOOSE to sign here
no. From a Jordan Raanan article:
Brown said Monday he had asked for his release.
"We parted ways on good terms as well. As for the release, it just wasn't playing into the strengths that I have as a safety," he said. "So there was no point in being around there."
He later added:
"They were OK with it. They didn't want to keep me there and hinder me. So I definitely appreciate them for doing that and letting me go."
Brown joins rookie Landon Collins, and veterans Jeromy Miles, Brandon Meriweather and Cooper Taylor seriously in the Giants safety mix. Miles and Meriweather were signed as free agents this summer as well.
There is opportunity for Brown with the Giants. They haven't even settled on a starting safety tandem for Week 1.
"Seems like a position of need," Brown said. "So it's a good fit. Definitely expected to come back."....
But the two parties never met according to Stapleton.
And the Giants are good with that scenario? That's how they're doing business? That sort of concerns me.
There is no way it was that seamless. No way. It was mutual but he had a can't miss landing spot? Without having any contact like Stapleton said? Competitive for Stevie Brown to the point that the new DC doesn't even talk to the guy? Nope. Not buying it.
Me too Micky.
Other than the fact that he can't tackle and he can't cover.
But please, please bring up the INTs from three years ago. Because being out of position and lucking into picks from front 4 pressure is great. Especially for a guy a year removed from injury.
No need for meetings or conversations. Just sign up! Give him a participation ribbon! Everybody wins!
Except the fans.

Brown knew he wasn't making this team. He new he'd have a fair shot at the Giants. Once he was released they went and got him. This is a short period of time from release to signing and it is competitive.

Do pick ups at this stage usually talk to the DC's prior to signing? Higher profile free agents I think would, but not cuts from other teams (but I'm obviously guessing and speaking from a place of ignorance).

Come on.

So you'd rather be counting on an injured Miles?
For one, Brown did say in his media Q&A that he asked for his release. He may have or may not have...sometimes players make up reality to protect their image...but I don't see that it matters either way...he was going to get cut.
As said above, beggars can't be choosers. Brown became available, they gave him $745,000 salary plus a $40,000 roster bonus. He has until Saturday to prove his worthy. He was starting with the second team this week, but of course he was. He's a former NFL starter. The other guys ahead of him were rookie free agents (Conway and Halley) who were only signed during training camp when injuries hit.
What will be more interesting to watch is who might come free on Saturday and does that kick Brown and/or Meriweather off of the roster. My guess is they have to keep at least one. But do they go with a 5th safety?
The free agent class was light at safety, and so was the draft.
Don't be so dramatic. I'm simply trying to gauge everyone's thoughts about Stapleton's report. Settle down.
Now we have a report that the Giants signed a guy who is completely unfamiliar with Spags and they basically did it sight unseen. I'm not making it up. It comes from a guy who is supposed to be in tune with these deals. That's odd to me.
But I guess I'm glad you all got your guys. Should be awesome. Can't wait. Haha.

Well, we can't wait until you start making sense.
The answer is multi-faceted, here are just a few:
Playing in a good system that fits you abilities
Having great players around you that cover your mistakes (Harry Carson is the prime example, how he always had L.T.'s back)
Having great instincts (more important than speed) - All-time interception leader Paul Krause is the best example
As far as Stevie not having contact with Spags, how many players does Reese sign that may have not talked to Spags ? Do you think Merriweather spoke to him, before he signed ? Probably not.
Reese knows Stevie; I'm sure he spoke to Spags before the offer was made. What's the big deal ?
fuck out of here with that shit
Bill, they've done that before. I remember one year they carried all of these shitty linebackers because they didn't really have any good ones.
I can see a situation where they have to carry an extra guy because until the one they just picked up on waivers is up to speed, the shittier one has to play.

B in ALB...I agree with you on Brown. For a big guy, he doesn't play the run or tackle or hit well. He had an amazing year in 2012 intercepting the ball (they were not all tipped passes/lucky plays) but he never made any plays on the ball in 2014.
I think the Giants are simply trying to find someone who knows Coughlin and the team environment to stop the bleeding. You can't go into the season with C.J. Conway and Justin Halley.
no, that isn't what you read, that's what you inferred. What you would've read, had you possessed even the most elementary of reading comprehension skills,is that all players, even Hall of Famer's, benefit from a strong surrounding cast.
Don't think much of Brown either, but the Giants hold Merritt in high regard it would appear, and he's coached Brown here before, my guess is his opinion was heavily weighted.
Meriweather is a two time Pro Bowler.
Collins was the best safety in the draft.
.......I'm trying, guys.
I look at it this way: Stevie Brown signed a ceremonial one-week contract to retire a Giant. He just doesn't know it yet.
Except Stevie was terrible last season. Spags didn't fair poorly in Balitmore last I checked. Did he build up his resume enough to warrant a DC gig? Probably not but I can see the connection. To me, Brown has no range at all anymore and that was all he could do before.
I mean, does Brown even play on Special Teams? I don't think Meriweather has ever been a ST ace. Taylor can in a pinch although he should be starting right with Collins. Miles and Berhe are both solid ST players but are lingering with questions regarding their health. To me, a fourth S is someone who can do ST so that guy may not even be on the roster at this point.
I look at it as Brown v. Meriweather and loser of that battle is cut.
