in this high scoring league. If this guy can turn the field for us, it was a good trade. More importantly, then last years stats is how he performed this preseason?
a good punter or long snapper after the Trey Junkin and Matt Dodge disasters.
I don't think anyone's dismissing the importance - mostly back and forth as to whether or not this guy is good enough and whether the price paid (which we don't know yet) was justified.
FWIW - Weatherford hasn't looked good this preseason, and wasn't too great last year. Continuity at holder is important, and you sure as hell don't want to downgrade at the position, but a savings of $2M is nothing to sneeze about, it can help us fill another hole.
but the kicking was going down, like others said, this is a now move, TC is a directional guy and field position will help a defense in need of every edge to improve
was going to get cut from the Steelers but we gave up a draft pick. Also, considering there are quality punters available as FAs,I wonder why they made the trade? Wing is only 24,certainly has upside so I guess we'll let him prove himself to the faithful!
for me is that it honestly doesn't seem like Wing was all that good last year.
That's fair - and all I can assume is that the Giants either figure he's better than that or that if anything he's a minor downgrade from where Weatherford is now, and is worth saving $2m on. The relationship between the Giants and Steelers leaves me to believe that they wouldn't take on Wing without a recommendation.

Yeah, I don't even care about the 7th round pick, especially if the P is a proven commodity in the NFL, and a decent to good punter. But if he wasn't even good last year, it's a head-scracther. And no, I'm not going to take the Giants word for it that they see something in him with the way our ST's have been over the years.

I agree it does but we kept hearing TC wanted a directional punter-Wing is not that!

Steelers traded for Scobee...
Hey i will be the first to admit i have no idea what kind of punter he is...so i am not going to argue that, maybe the Giants see something in him..
also he is under control next year as well so if he punts well they have a punter for 500 thousand rather than 2 million...
Most important aspect of this for me, IMO, will be what the Giants Â
do with the money they save. If they turn around and sign someone, or extend a pending FA, with money that they wouldn't have had otherwise, then it makes sense. I can't speak for their talent evaluation, but trading a low round pick instead of waiting for cuts isn't a terrible move if they don't think anyone decent was going to shake out and if they know there is going to be enough competition for anyone who does come loose.
was in the works before last night's game. Perhaps TC thought, let's see how Weatherford does against the Pats. If not well,, then let's pull trigger on trade.
we had Matt Dodge blow shit up in our face so we should never trade for a punter again. Even though we didn't even trade for Matt Dodge. And one has nothing to do with the other.
We should just stop doing anything. Because of Matt Dodge.

Made me legitimately laugh.
I guess there was somebody ahead of us in the waiver line... Â
...who also needs a punter. That by itself would explain the trade. Wing was probably going to lose his job to an undrafted rookie, but it was a close contest. He's certainly one of the 32 best punters, and has more upside than most.
The only surprising aspect is that he has struggled with directional kicking, which is a Coughlin hot button.
In the end, it really is just one punt. But Berry showed an ability to pin an opponent, something Wing struggled mightily with last season. The fact that they have been so disgustingly equal this pre-season has largely served to disappoint those who would wish Wing sayonara no matter how well he might perform between now and roster cut-down day. All else being equal, in Pittsburgh, it's hard to knock a returning player off the roster without clearly defeating him.

Good Trade.
Jordan Berry offers little more hang time than Brad Wing, so I like this trade. The problem with Wing’s punts other than occasional shanks was he would outkick the coverage because his hang time isn’t great.

Details are still coming in about what the Steelers received in return, but if the organization receives even a low draft pick for the trade it would be a win for having two punters who performed admirably throughout the 2015 preseason in what became the most unlikely tight race of training camp and preseason. The draft pick the Steelers receive would be a solid return for them dealing out their own sixth round pick to the Jaguars in order to acquire kicker Josh Scobee.
Brad Wing performed well enough in his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014 to warrant his return to the team, but he came up against a tough opponent in rookie Jordan Berry.
Same Poster 2016 Draft- the Giants select in the 7th round guy you probably never heard of and is not listed in any draft guides" oh no I hate that pick that guy sucks what is Reese doing"
The comedic gold is priceless
Weatherford wasn't really that great either when we signed Â
him from the Jets, if I remember right. Plus he didn't get along with his coach at all. I think they hated each other and Weatherford was so bold as to change a call on the field by running a fake punt.
McGaughey was his ST coach at LSU who also coached Dodge and the article quotes him saying Wing is better:
"The 22-year-old Australian was arrested in 2011 for simple battery, engaged in a shouting match with McGaughey during a contest and was suspended for LSU's bowl game this year after a failed drug test."
Denver gave up a 7th for a kicker, if you recall.
Quote:
"Unlike most punters, he wants the fame," one scout said. "If he goes to New York or somewhere like that, look out. He's just a big party guy.
If that's true, then you can't say the team didn't like Weatherford for his personality.

This year should be full of excitement.

if think think he's a better punter and saves money, what's there to complain about?
Giving up a draft pick.
So? We don't know the pick and how many of them make our team? If we can upgrade specials is that not worth a 7th?

Not if you can get someone just as good on waivers.

You're literally only looking at names and assuming that guy is still good because you know his name.

Wing was ranked 28th out of 32. You could end up with someone better.

He was ranked that by PFF, they're not exactly gospel.

Maybe Wing works out, maybe he doesn't. But we wouldn't be giving a pick for him if we didn't feel he's the best of what's out there.
We should just stop doing anything. Because of Matt Dodge.
If you can somehow equate trading a late round draft pick for a punter to anal rape then you have issues. Maybe re-evaluate some things.

The Giants aren't surrendering a draft pick here. They're trading a pick for a player. I don't see how the Bobby Hart and Geremy Davis comments apply.
