Not a fan of this move. Prefer the vet Fields.
FranknWeezer : 9/4/2015 12:29 pm : link
Especially don't like that he's supposedly nothing but a big leg who's not adept at pinning the opponent deep.

But I bet one reason we went after him was because he's left-footed, and their punts spin the opposite direction, making them more difficult to catch cleanly.

Probably going to be something like the trade with the Broncos, where the pick is not guaranteed until he on the team for so many weeks...

Probably a 7th on condition he is still on the roster after week 4 or something like that..

The New York Giants have a new punter today after releasing veteran Steve Weatherford and acquiring Brad Wing from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft choice.

Weatherford, who spent the last four seasons of his 11-year NFL career with the Giants, punted 311 times for the team with a net average of 38.8 yards per punt, and landed 97 inside the 20. He will be remembered for the hold -- and the ensuing celebration -- on Lawrence Tynes’ 31-yard overtime field goal in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers that sent the Giants to Super Bowl XLVI.

Wing, originally undrafted out of LSU in 2013, punted in all 16 regular-season games for the Steelers last season and also handled their holding duties. He punted 61 times with a 43.7-yard average and landed 20 inside the 20-yard line. His average of 8.2 yards per return ranked 12thin the NFL in 2014 while his net average of 38.8 was good for 20th. Wing also played in the Steelers’ Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens, knocking two of his three punts inside the 20.

Wing, a lefty from Melbourne, Australia, started his pro career as a rookie free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 before being released prior to the regular season. He then signed with Pittsburgh on Jan. 3, 2014.

This is odd (from the link above)

"Unlike most punters, he wants the fame," one scout said. "If he goes to New York or somewhere like that, look out. He's just a big party guy.

"He's more interested in the length of his punts than the directional or actually being an NFL-type punter."

Follow up question: whats he doing hanging out with OBJ?

Beat writers are saying it is a conditional 7th in 2016...

How did the giants give up a pick for Brown when he was released?

Probably
Probably won't know the condition for awhile
jcn56 : 9/4/2015 12:44 pm : link
but in McManus' case wasn't it a certain number of games on the active roster?

The worst case scenario here is we're out a 7th. Best case we have a replacement for Weatherford and save $1.6M, and most likely is he doesn't pan out and we pick up the same vet punter off the wire without having to guarantee his salary.

Probably has to be with the team for a number of weeks, just like McManus was for Denver. If he was released by a certain NFL week, the Giants didn't have to give a pick.

Not so concerned with the draft pick. Id gladly give up a 7th for a young starting punter. I am more concerned with the player we traded for and his off the field issues. The article posted earlier in this thread said "watch out if he goes to NY, he loves to party." Also claims that he wasnt welcome back at LSU. You know how bad one must be to not be welcome back to LSU? This makes me nervous.

do you think TC and Reese didn't have that info? If not, don't you think they addressed that up front and are confident it wont be an issue?

Not saying its fullproof but taking a report of him liking to party as gospel is just strange. We don't have more info on him than the Giants do...

Did you read the article? Its not just about partying. There were reports of multiple failed drug tests. They say he has a big personality that typically doesnt go over well in locker rooms. He wasnt welcome back at LSU with two years left to play.

Of course TC and Reese have this info, but punting is very important and it makes me nervous that we traded for a guy like this who doesnt sound like the most reliable.

Im not killing the trade, but the fact that our punting situation is not locked down right now makes me nervous.

Also, coaches bring in guys with character issues that dont work out on almost every team. The fact that they hope it will work out doesnt make me less nervous. They hoped Will Hill would work out and it didn't. I think being nervous about our punting situation is pretty reasonable at this moment.

Surprised. I thought Fields would be the choice.
Ivan15 : 9/4/2015 1:26 pm : link
Maybe they are avoiding a bidding war by trading for a guy with a low $$ contract.

I hope it is a conditional trade and they at least have 10 days to decide to keep or replace.

i have no desire to read the article. Getting our punter in line to not fail a drug test is the least of what "worries" me about this team.

This can be a good trade with very little risk. Not sure what all the fuss is about.
Here's what is bugging me about move:
kinard : 9/4/2015 1:32 pm : link
1) If Wing is any good, what motivates a good team like the Steelers to ditch a promising 24 year old kicker for a rookie free agent with no experience?

2) Bringing in a guy who "loves to party" and also hangs out a lot with Beckham doesn't strike me as a good thing...for either Wing or Beckham;

3) In one year, Wing developed a reputation as a shitty holder which may have contributed to Steelers decision to bring in Josh Scobee from Jags to compete with kicker Shaun Suisham;

4) Last year against Bucs, Wing shanked a 29 yarder from deep in Steeler territory in 4th quarter that may have cost Pittsburgh the game.

But I guess with a sharp ST guy like Tom Quinn coaching him up, sky is the limit (yeesh)
We know they traded for hm to back up the Man of Many Talents

Sure did. Josh Brown. i hope this kid takes a similar path. brown seems to be well liked by the team.

I didnt say I hate the trade. I said his off the field issues make me nervous and concerned about our punting situation. I hope he is a great guy with a long career, but at this point I am concerned about it.

I dont really think saying Im nervous about an unknown punting situation is really making a fuss. The trade is pretty low risk and doesnt bother me. But I am nervous about the guy we brought in being reliable. Punting is very important and having an unlnown situation concerns me. I think thats pretty reasonable.

have no problem with this trade. The pick is a conditional seventh. My guess is that as others have said, it's like the McManus trade we made with Denver. Wing has to be with us for a certain number of weeks for Pittsburgh to get a seventh. And even if they do, it's only a seventh. We gave up a seventh for Beason. I opposed that trade, and was wrong to do so. Resigning Beason was another matter, but there was nothing wrong with trading a seventh for him. We also had to make the trade because even if cut, with less than four years in the league, Wind would have been subject to waivers. Somebody with a higher wavier claim may have taken him.

As far as his troubles are concerned, I'm sure the Giants have done their due diligence. After Will Hill, and the emphasis in the NFL on domestic violence, they want to be sure there won't be any problems. And it does appear as if he has matured. There have apparently been no problems while he was at Pittsburgh.

What's more troubling is the occasional shank, his possible problems with directional punting, and sometimes out kicking his coverage. But the Giants must think he can overcome these problems, and somebody compared him to Janikowski. He is also only 24, so if he works out, we have solved this problem for years.
I've got no issue with this.....

good punting is not to be underestimated....especially with a defense like ours appears to be.

Remember when Weatherford first replaced Dodge? It was a breath of fresh air. But Weatherford is not the same player in 2015.

The Giants aren't there yet. Anything that points to improving the team and making it better......i'm all for it.

a player who should cost next to nothing both to acquire and in salary. 7th round picks are unlikely to make the team. But this years 7th pick has been promising so far. Bradshaw was a 7th pick too. They spent $10 million in guaranteed money on ST players for roles that should be filled by UDFA or low round picks. Every NFL has limited money/salary cap and limited picks to acquire players. The Giants are using too much of both for the bottom of their roster.

This drasticaly underestimates the importance of special teams. You need special teams players. It is not a negative to invest limited resources into the unit, considering how putrid it has been. A 7th round pick for a punter is absolutey worthwhile, especially if the conditions are similar to the Mcmanus trade last year. Go look at what the ST unit did for the Eagles last year.

the giants also saved a decent amount of money against the cap, so what, if anything, will they do with it? I guess they call roll it over to next season, but I have a feeling (wishful thinking perhaps?) they'll try and get an upgrade somewhere.

Of course ST's are a huge part of the game. LT and Harry used to play ST's in the 80's. But the game has changed because of limited assets. The best teams build excellent ST's on the cheap. The Giants are paying way too much.
