Of course ST's are a huge part of the game. LT and Harry used to play ST's in the 80's. But the game has changed because of limited assets. The best teams build excellent ST's on the cheap. The Giants are paying way too much.

The best teams build excellent special teams with the best players suited to do their role..........

And furthermore, the Giants from what I am reading are saving cap room with this move.

What is not to like????
just great

another organization fail, let's revisit the Matt Dodge/Feagles thing...Kind of late to be figuring out the replacement for Weatherford.....Does this team ever learn from their mistakes? Apparently not.
How is this revisiting the Matt Dodge situation?
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/4/2015 2:39 pm : link
You know Wing has experience, right?
One thing I thought of...
ThatLimerickGuy : 9/4/2015 2:43 pm : link
Don't discount the message that this sent to the team.

By all accounts Weatherford was a good teammate and good community guy.

There might be an element of complacency that the staff sees and making this move 9 days before the season starts does send a clear message about "scholarship" players.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't believe for a second that the Giants don't internally believe that they just got a better punter for a fraction of the salary allocated to the position yesterday, but there could be that added benefit of throwing the smelling salts under the noses of some comfy vets.
According to Reese this guy will become the JPP of punters.
Johnny Boy : 9/4/2015 2:48 pm : link
He has unbelievable measurable, an undaunted upside with a tremendous amount of dog in him. Now of course we could have used the 7th pick for the Next La'el Collins but know here he goes wasting it away again.

Just go away.
It's probably already been said, but

our special team is still so bad that we had to dump a meh sidelines punter for a meh sideline punter who can hopefully boom they ball away from being returned?
The mighty Quinn rules.

we are not in a position to be wasting draft picks trading for punters. We have no depth and this isnt a final piece of the puzzle type move.

Yeah because our 7th round draft picks have performed real well for us. Get a clue buddy.
Low risk move
dpinzow : 9/4/2015 3:10 pm : link
Wing could be a top 5 punter but he has to stop being crazy

When you go I'll go. So there.
Can we all stop with the Collins crap?
LarmerTJR : 9/4/2015 3:20 pm : link
no team, again, NO TEAM, spent a draft pick on this guy. Yes the Cowboys signed him. Good for them. Every time we make a move, can we not bring up the fact that the Giants didn't do something that EVERY other team didn't do as well?
Couple links (honestly nothing special) ....

Fake punt at LSU that went for 6 but called back because he was taunting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT_TGuoLdmk

Botched extra point snap that he converted for 2, with a pass. Crappy quality
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPyJDfq7xKY

So he's a holder, can run a little, can throw a little, kicks with the left (not sure if that's really an advantage). Looks like a slight upgrade to Weatherford but he's younger and cheaper. Only worried about the rare shanks I guess. Maybe Feagles can teach him directional punting. I'm good with it.

when Dave Jennings was cut, for.......Sean Landeta?

Jennings was fading, and Landeta gave our specials a HUGE boost.

I'm not saying Wing is Landeta, but this is a clear attempt to improve the team. And our specials need that.

If management thinks this improves the team on the field (and financially), I'll play along. But if we want to make a CLEAR attempt to improve special teams,we get rid of Quinn (and for whatever the reason, that ain't happening)!
nice, he's a lefty
Torn Tendon : 9/4/2015 3:35 pm : link
Pats go with left footed punters. Thinking is the ball has a different spin that returners aren't as comfortable with so it can help with fumbles.
Here's the new guy. Looks skinny.

Most importantly, this is what he has done this pre-season
Simms11 : 9/4/2015 3:56 pm : link
Heading into the preseason finale, he averaged 49.1 yards per punt, and landed 4 of his 11 punts inside the 20 yard line. These stats are actually very good. He has shown improvement from last year with the Steelers and I'm sure this is what the Giants were really looking at.

What's not to like: he's young, cheap and has shown great potential.

My concern is his further development under Quinn!!!! I think the Giants should bring in Feags as an advisor for this kid.
LSU Bias?
clatterbuck : 9/4/2015 4:12 pm : link
I thought we had a BC/Syracuse bias.
i don't give a shit if he parties

if it's the offseason if he doesn't

Assault, rape, kill, steal, vandalize and doesnt become an adict or anything who cares. i think a lot of guys did similar shit that we just don't know about. and hey he has 10 fingers.
This appears to be a money move in addition to concern about
GeofromNJ : 9/4/2015 5:55 pm : link
Weatherford's lingering ankle injury. But as some others have pointed out, who's the new holder? Coughlin must have somebody in mind.

1) If Wing is any good, what motivates a good team like the Steelers to ditch a promising 24 year old kicker for a rookie free agent with no experience?

2) Bringing in a guy who "loves to party" and also hangs out a lot with Beckham doesn't strike me as a good thing...for either Wing or Beckham;

3) In one year, Wing developed a reputation as a shitty holder which may have contributed to Steelers decision to bring in Josh Scobee from Jags to compete with kicker Shaun Suisham;

4) Last year against Bucs, Wing shanked a 29 yarder from deep in Steeler territory in 4th quarter that may have cost Pittsburgh the game.

But I guess with a sharp ST guy like Tom Quinn coaching him up, sky is the limit (yeesh)

I really hate defending Quinn, but it is my understanding that coaching kickers is what he excels at. It durn sure isn't scheming or drawing up coverages/blocking schemes. I am totally anti Quinn, but I acknowledge the improvements he has made to kickers livelihood.
I guess it's official ....

Complete Speculation

maybe Nassib becomes the holder. Is it better to have a QB as the holder? I know the rationale in using the punter was that the punter is used to catching a long snap.

I also wouldnt care if he just partied in the off season. But there are plenty of guys who struggle to keep it just in the off season. See Johnny Manziel, josh Gordon etc. There are other red flags like failed drug tests, suspensions and an arrest for an assault. He was basically told by LSU coaches not to return. These were all in college and i hope he matured, but I maintain that it is perfectly reasonable to be concerned about our punting game.

I like the trade, just nervous about how he performs and how he handles himsef in the NY area. I imagine TC and Reese are as well but feel he has a handle on it and they can keep him in line. For every Gordon there are guys who overcame issues and had successful careers.

Compete with Suisham? Suisham is hurt. Scobee was brought in to fill the void.
Just saw him punt on a replay of the

Panthers vs Steelers game 4 preseason and he just boomed a 57 yard kick to the sideline. The returners muffed the kick too. Looked good to me. I suppose consistency was his issue.
Weatherford has some bad punts in his resume too.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/4/2015 9:30 pm : link
Can't necessarily dwell over a young player who shanked a punt. You can find that in the history of anyone you would rather have.

I've got no opinion
giantgiantfan : 9/4/2015 9:37 pm : link
punting is the least of my worries right now, but a bad punter could compound existing issues.

It has more to do with practice time. The backup QB is busy running the scout team offense and learning the gameplan in case he needs to step in. The Punter, on the other hand, has plenty of free time to drill the FG process with the LS and PK.
