NFT: How much is your water bill?

spike : 9/4/2015 3:28 pm
We are preparing our move from BK to Westchester and the water bill is $500 last month to water our 0.45 acre lawn once a day and no one living inside.

How much is yours?
Holy crap!
Cam in MO : 9/4/2015 3:35 pm : link
Watering every morning the most I've paid is $100 in month. That's water/sewage and garbage removal.

If I'm not watering the lawn, I'm always right under $50.

That's a lot of money just for a greener lawn
steve in ky : 9/4/2015 3:38 pm : link
Unless I just planted a tree or reseeded a lawn I don't usually water it.
$90 per quarter
Gmen703 : 9/4/2015 3:38 pm : link
If it doesn't rain, then I might spit on the lawn.
About 60 bucks in OKC...
okiegiant : 9/4/2015 3:40 pm : link
and I have a lot of very thirsty plants.
?
Big Al : 9/4/2015 3:41 pm : link
I don't get one.
75 per month and
section125 : 9/4/2015 3:44 pm : link
we have a well for the lawn. Twice or three times a week was $300/month on city water in South Florida. 0.5 acre

The well was $1800 - so in 8 months it paid for itself.

BTW, you shouldn't need to water everyday - maybe 2x per week.
100
Padiwan15 : 9/4/2015 3:44 pm : link
Every three months Queens NY.
$300 to water the lawn?!?!?
Deej : 9/4/2015 3:47 pm : link
Thanks, Obama
I have 13-zone
pjcas18 : 9/4/2015 3:48 pm : link
irrigation and water every zone every morning and my water bill is $125 per quarter, plus I've filled up my 30,000 gallon inground swimming pool and not seen the water bill increase more than $100 in that quarter.

something is wrong (maybe someone is stealing water from you) or water is at California prices where you live.

my estimates are for metro-west Boston, could be different from Westchester.
That seems very high
buford : 9/4/2015 3:52 pm : link
you should have the water company come out and check for leaks.

Also, you shouldn't water every day. A deep watering once a week is fine.
Agree with others
Jim in Fairfax : 9/4/2015 3:58 pm : link
Huge waste of water. Lawns don't need that much.
Mine
jtfuoco : 9/4/2015 4:00 pm : link
is 30 dollars a month for unlimited water.
Can you give an idea of gallons of water used....
MOOPS : 9/4/2015 4:04 pm : link
and unrelated costs that appear on the bill, like sewage and waste removal?
$84
TEPLimey : 9/4/2015 4:04 pm : link
for 6 months. With watering 1/3 acre.

Yeah and actually I had always been taught that if you water everyday the grass roots will never grow deep and strong enough and be more prone to burning and dying when faced with a real hot dry spell since so much of the roots will be close to the surface. Where as less frequent watering will result in a proper root system with a healthier stronger lawan.

This is correct.

thanks for the info. We've never had a real lawn before.. . Once a week is enough?
$500? Holy Moly! We're in an epic drought in CA
Damon : 9/4/2015 4:12 pm : link
And we're in the fight of our lives for a rate increase that would make the average bill $85... These are acre lots!!!

It depends who well established your lawn is
pjcas18 : 9/4/2015 4:25 pm : link
if it's like mine was (since I bought a foreclosed house that was vacant and neglected for a long time) you need to water everyday to establish the lawn (especially if you have just planted grass).

If your lawn is established then less frequent watering is fine (I'd definitely water more than once a week though - your grass will definitely burn in a few days in the brutal summer heat).

I think the rule of thumb is basically an inch to an inch and a half of water per week, and it's better to not give that water all at once but also better with an established lawn not to water daily too.
who

= how
I pay my bill
Gene : 9/4/2015 4:26 pm : link
every 3 months and it's usually in the $300 neighborhood. The real kick in the nuts is roughly 1/3 of that is actual water use and the rest NYC taxes.
like so many things in California
ed90631 : 9/4/2015 4:29 pm : link
they've worked it out that some else pays it.
ok looking over the bill
spike : 9/4/2015 4:31 pm : link
it is for 48 days of water use for 81 TGAL of water

Average cost of $11.52 a day.. is that too high?
Used to pay quarterly
WideRight : 9/4/2015 4:33 pm : link
Summer time bill would exceed 1200 and I didn't even water excessively.

Moved to a house with a well. Much better
that is some expensive green grass
mdc1 : 9/4/2015 4:36 pm : link
grass goes dormant in the summer, browns and snaps back in the fall if root care is well maintained. Silly to water so much unless you are doing it for vanity reasons...or keeping up with the jones 's
do you get taxed for rain
mdc1 : 9/4/2015 4:37 pm : link
like we do here in Maryland lol
I'd say way too much water being used.
MOOPS : 9/4/2015 4:40 pm : link
When I lived in Huntington on an acre, I'd use about 80,000 to 90,000 gallons a quarter during the summer periods and be down to about 15,000 during the winter periods.
And we had a lot of lawn.
Do you have a sink with a leaky faucet or a toilet that stays running?
steve in ky : 9/4/2015 4:46 pm : link
Look everything over carefully. Or you may have a leak in an underground waterline coming to the home. Sounds like a lot of water.
Might want to test the meter.
Watson : 9/4/2015 5:28 pm : link

Had that problem many years ago.
Between $50-65

Desert landscaping. Drip system runs 10-20 minutes a day depending on season. I have 6 or 7 citrus trees and various cacti/grasses everywhere. 9000+ square foot lot.

Most I've ever paid monthly $70.
Lawns
phil in arizona : 9/4/2015 7:35 pm : link
