we won't be releasing anyone of significance for him, and he's coming with no risk. Try him out, if it doesn't work you can pick up a vet after the first game to fill the spot.
Please tell me Kuhn and Hosley will be released now :X
As I said in my thread, there are work ethic concerns, but at this point, we have to hope we catch lightning in a bottle with his obvious potential. Kuhn will be Kuhn, we can afford to lose him because he has reached his ceiling and that ceiling is not very impressive.
"Jackson was the teams primary return man throughout the preseason. Michael Campanaro (River Hill), Steve Smith Sr. and Lardarius Webb could all be used on punt returns, but all five of the players who returned kicks in the preseason have been waived.
Still, Jacksons release seemed inevitable after he lost fumbles in back-to-back games and was unable to finish two returns that should have been touchdowns. The jettisoning of Jackson, Reid and Tyson left the Ravens with just 13 players from the team that won Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013."
LOL, I wonder how many posts there would be clamoring for Hosley and how the Giants have to grab him off waivers because top prospect coming out of college if another team would have cut him yesterday. I know I would have made a couple.
"Today's move was another blow to the Texans' third-round drafting history. They drafted seven players since 2012 in the third round, a round that can produce starters. Only three of those seven still remain with the team -- starting right guard Brandon Brooks (2012), tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz (2014) and receiver Jaelen Strong (2015). The players drafted in the third round who are no longer with the team are DeVier Posey (2012), Brennan Williams and Sam Montgomery (2013) and Nix (2014)."
Commentator on 103 yard KR highlight mentions that Jackson needed it after "really struggling at defensive back and giving up some plays."
I like having a returner with big play capability but doesn't sound like much of an upgrade at backup CB. And there's the Dwayne Harris investment. Link - ( New Window )
What does either one of these players bring to our defense or ST. Nix looks like he would be about the same as Ellis with bad knees and that Harris guy we spent all that money for because of his ST play WTH?
safeties? Didn't one of the beat writers say they heard the Giants might be looking for up to two safeties from the waiver wire? Nobody was apparently worth even putting in a claim.
The knee injuries/surgeries are being a bit overblown for Nix.

Do we know they didn't put in a claim for some safeties and were not awarded them?

That's true. But because of our rotten record last year, we had a pretty high waiver claim. I assumed we try for a few, and at least get one for that reason. It's certainly possible we did, and everyone we wanted was taken by a team with a higher waiver claim.

That's why I thought the Giants were in okay position to land a guy like Jean-Baptiste but no interest. I thought the scouts like him last year. No team willing to give him a roster spot.
year and they're dumping him already? Don't see much reason for optimism here. People put too much on old draft reports. The Texans have seen him close up and decided he can't play. Whether it's injuries or lack of talent or no motor doesn't much matter. I guess we could get lucky, but more likely we just find out for ourselves what Houston already knew.

It's the waiver wire. You are mostly looking for a slightly better back up.
just saying not very optimistic about Nix panning out.
He can't be worse than Kuhn, so I'm more hopeful with Nix. As for Asa, he looks very promising as an an explosive returner and I assume Spags knows what he is getting as a DB since he worked with him in Baltimore. Also, he made a fumble on a punt return he should have fair caught. Ok, he tried to make a play late in the game with his team down big. This is correctable and should not be held against him. And his falling down after running 103 yards on a kick off return also should not be held against him. The dude ran 103 yards for crying out loud. Hey, if Harris gets hurt, we have plan B if not plan A.
So, I'm happier and more hopeful today than I was yesterday.
one of the reasons why i love this site. Great diggers and knowledgeable football guys here. Thanks for all the info and opinions. We all have to pull together now and who knows ? love the HC and the Coordinators and think they will get the best they can get with this talent.
Of mine is a big Texans fan and claims that they are very high on rookie Christian Covington who is already playing behind Wilfork. It may have been a logjam at nt there. A healthy Nix could have a bright future with us. Plenty of talent.
These were meniscus repairs or scopes over a yr ago and the other almost two years ago. He's been this year and played throughout the preseason.
Thanks for this update, I feel better. Are you optimistic here?
Nix is a run-stuffer which is what the Giants D needs desperately. I'm optimistic he can certainly help on obvious run downs and add some beef to the D line.
for 3 or more years before cutting bait? I know they are high draft choices like Hosley and Robinson but other teams do it after a year or so. We keep the Moss', Austins et al for years.

Probably someone wants to perpetuate that they know about talent selection in the draft or FA. Everybody deserves a CHANCE but how many bad years do you have before you are out? Think that is a fair question with this teams downward spiral. Next year maybe we will get a top 5 pick for these guys to FU.
knees are a concern of course, but I'm less concerned about the scheme fit and work ethic issues. He simply can't be worse than Kuhn if healthy. He doesnt need to be a penetrating DT, because Kuhn did nothing but get moved backwards and sideways, so if he can hold his own for 2 seconds he will be an upgrade.
prior to the draft. His cutting in Houston after a year would seem to also point in this direction, and thst's not based on a lack of talent. Maybe he's a dog, or maybe the light goes on. NFL Network, Houston selects Nix III - ( New Window )
So would I. As somebody said, who cares about pre draft reports now? Nix was a third round pick the Texans traded up to get in 2014, and they have already cut him after just one year. He's had problems with his knees, but the bigger problem is his work ethic. Coughlin and Reese think they can talk some sense into him, and suddenly get him to be a professional. Why? When the Texans, the team that drafted him, could not.
Cutting Ellis for this guy is stupid, especially when it leaves Kuhn on the roster. If Ellis had a lot of the same problems as Nix, then why was he signed as a FA? And if they couldn't fix Ellis, then why do they think they can fix Nix? Ellis at least knows the defense, and played reasonably well during the preseason.
I also don't understand signing a CB with coverage liabilities.

Great point. Good players never go to other teams. Is this your first time following football? Welcome!
Please tell me Kuhn and Hosley will be released now :X
Sam concern about Nix, but I like him as part of a rotation.
He's young, is scheme versatile, and has upside. His reps will have to be managed.
I think Kuhn or Ellis are cut possibilities.
Nix Draft Profile - ( New Window )
Few suspensions for PED's but appears he never put in the paperwork for Adderall, but now that he has, shouldn't be a problem anymore.
Least he'll know the Spags system.
I think we have a higher waiver claim position than the Steelers. So they could have put in a claim, we just don't know.
Please tell me Kuhn and Hosley will be released now :X
Jackson comes from the Ravens..hmmm. Guess Spags knows him.
Which brings up: did we get him as a CB or could he take the return role, despite the money D Harris is getting.

Weak and in flux.
Louis Nix III

Giants medical staff again. Why would the Steelers pass on Nix if his knees were healthy? We know more than they do?
I think you're thinking of Phil Taylor
I thought they looked at both. In any event, Nix does have knee issues IIRC. If not, I stand corrected.
arrgh, sorry, was trying to type fast. If a mod wants me to delete I will.

Nah, just busting balls...no need to delete. It was a good scoop and also to you stillpoe.

even top teams will add/cut players this week. It doesn't mean weakness.
What they say, the grass is always greener.

Maybe his fate was sealed when Wilfork was signed but the Texans also decided to keep a rookie and cut Nix.
So, who knows? Cannot get too excited about him at this time.

No worries at all. Happy to give stillpoe the win due to his error free performance.
That seems likely. Still liked the small sample we saw of him last year more than what we've seen from Hosley the past 2 years.
#Giants know Louis Nix (@1irishchocolate) very well. Pro scout Tim McDonnell, John Mara's nephew, worked at ND for 8 yrs in team personnel.

I heard we're releasing Hankins and DRC to make room for these additions.
I didn't see that Pats/Saints game but was it really that bad?
Stanley Jean-Baptiste goes unclaimed - ( New Window )
He made it through waivers though since he is only accepting a PS. Just wow.

Encouraging.
